Chapter 4- A NEW BEGINNING

1320 Words
The days that followed their daughter's birth were some of the happiest Veronica had ever known. The house was no longer filled with tension and unanswered questions. Instead, it was filled with the gentle cries of a newborn, quiet laughter, and the sound of Mama Umoru singing softly whenever she carried the baby. Veronica often found herself watching Daniel with their daughter. He had changed. The man who had once avoided difficult conversations now seemed determined to face everything directly. He helped Veronica during the nights when the baby refused to sleep. He prepared bottles, changed diapers, and sometimes walked around the room with his daughter in his arms until she finally stopped crying. One morning, Veronica woke up and found Daniel sitting beside the baby's cot. He was staring at their daughter with a smile. "You've been watching her again," Veronica said. Daniel turned. "I couldn't sleep." "Why?" He smiled. "Because she was smiling in her sleep." Veronica laughed softly. "Babies smile in their sleep." "I know." "Then why are you surprised?" "Because she's my daughter." Veronica sat beside him. Their daughter moved slightly but remained asleep. Daniel reached for Veronica's hand. "Thank you." She looked at him. "For what?" "For giving me another chance." Veronica squeezed his hand. "Don't thank me yet." He smiled. "I know." "You still have to keep proving yourself." "I will." She rested her head against his shoulder. This time, the silence between them felt peaceful. There was no hidden message waiting to destroy their morning. No unexpected visitor standing at the door. No painful question neither of them wanted to answer. For the first time in a long while, Veronica allowed herself to believe that their marriage could truly heal. Later that afternoon, Mama Umoru came into the room carrying food. "Veronica, you haven't eaten enough today." "I'll eat later." Mama Umoru frowned. "Later is always your answer." Daniel laughed. "She has been saying that since morning." Veronica looked at him. "Whose side are you on?" "Your mother's side." Mama Umoru smiled proudly. "Good answer." They all laughed. It was a simple moment, but Veronica treasured it. She had once entered the Umoru household wondering whether she would ever truly belong there. Now, she could hardly imagine her life without them. That evening, Umoru returned from town. He walked into the house quietly. Unlike before, his face was no longer constantly hard. The birth of his granddaughter had changed something in him. He stopped beside the baby's cot and looked down. "She is growing quickly," he said. Mama Umoru smiled. "Very quickly." Umoru looked at Veronica. "How are you feeling?" "I'm fine, Daddy." He nodded. "Good." Then he looked at Daniel. "Come outside with me." Daniel followed him. Veronica watched them leave. She wondered what they wanted to discuss, but she didn't feel the same fear she once would have felt. A few minutes later, Daniel returned. "What did your father want?" "He was asking about the business." "Is everything okay?" "Yes." Daniel sat beside her. "He also said something." "What?" "He said he's proud of us." Veronica smiled. "That's nice." "Very." For a while, they talked about ordinary things. They discussed the baby's name, the things they needed to buy, and whether they should move into their own house someday. It was during that conversation that Daniel made a suggestion. "I think we should start saving for our own place." Veronica looked at him. "You want us to move out?" "Not immediately." He smiled. "But someday." She thought about it. "I wouldn't mind." "I want to build something that belongs to us." Veronica smiled. "Then we should start planning." Daniel nodded. "We will." The following weeks passed peacefully. Veronica became more confident as a mother. Daniel became more responsible as a husband. Even the relationship between Daniel and his father seemed to improve. There were still occasional disagreements, but they no longer allowed anger to remain between them for long. One Saturday morning, Veronica was sitting outside with her daughter when Daniel came home carrying groceries. "You bought all this?" He placed the bags on the table. "I thought we needed them." "You bought too much." "I know." She laughed. "You are becoming like your mother." Daniel smiled. "Don't tell her. She'll be proud." Their daughter suddenly began making little sounds. Daniel immediately picked her up. "What happened, little princess?" Veronica watched them. Her heart felt full. She thought about everything they had survived. The photograph. Amara. The debt. The lies. The fear. It seemed like a distant memory now. But sometimes, even when life became peaceful, old wounds left small reminders. One evening, Veronica found herself awake while Daniel slept beside her. She looked at him for several minutes. She remembered the night she discovered his secret. She remembered how broken she had felt. Then she looked at their daughter sleeping peacefully in the next room. She realized that forgiveness had not erased the past. It had simply allowed them to stop living inside it. The next morning, Veronica received a phone call. It was Amara. Veronica stared at the screen before answering. "Hello?" "Veronica." Her voice was calm. "How are you?" "I'm fine. How about you?" "I'm okay." There was a short silence. "I wanted to tell you something," Amara said. "What is it?" "I received the money." Veronica sat down. "I'm glad." "Your father-in-law kept his word." "That's good." Amara took a breath. "I also wanted to apologize." Veronica was surprised. "For what?" "For the way I came into your home." Veronica remained silent. "I was angry," Amara continued. "I felt Daniel had betrayed me, and I wanted him to understand what he had done. But I realize now that you were also hurt by everything." Veronica's expression softened. "You don't have to apologize anymore." "I know. But I wanted to." "Thank you." Amara sighed. "I hope you and Daniel are happy." "We are trying." "That's good." Before ending the call, Amara said one final thing. "Take care of yourself, Veronica." "You too." The call ended. Veronica sat quietly for a moment. She felt something she had not expected. Peace. Not because she had forgotten Amara. Not because the past had disappeared. But because she no longer felt threatened by it. When Daniel came home that afternoon, Veronica told him about the call. He listened carefully. "I'm glad she is moving on," he said. "So am I." He sat beside Veronica. "Are you okay?" She smiled. "Yes." Daniel took her hand. "I know I caused you a lot of pain." Veronica looked at him. "You did." "I'm sorry." "I know." "I don't want to ever put you through that again." Veronica leaned against him. "Then don't." "I won't." Their daughter began crying from the bedroom. Daniel stood immediately. "I'll get her." Veronica smiled as she watched him leave. A few moments later, he returned with their daughter in his arms. "She wanted her mother." Veronica opened her arms. "Come here, my baby." The little girl settled against her chest. Daniel sat beside them. For a long moment, the three of them stayed together. It was not a perfect family. They had made mistakes. They had been hurt. They had almost lost one another. But they were learning. And sometimes, a new beginning did not mean forgetting everything that had happened before. Sometimes, it meant looking at the broken pieces, deciding they were worth saving, and carefully putting them back together. Veronica looked at Daniel. He smiled. She looked down at their daughter. Then she smiled too. She finally understood something. The secret that had once threatened to destroy her marriage had also taught her the importance of truth, forgiveness, and courage. She didn't know what the future would bring. But for the first time, she was no longer afraid of it. Whatever came next, she knew she would face it with the people she loved Together.
