The following morning began quietly.
Sunlight slipped through the curtains and spread across the bedroom floor. Veronica woke before Daniel, listening to the soft sounds coming from the next room.
Their daughter was awake.
She smiled to herself before getting out of bed.
As she entered the nursery, she found the little girl moving her hands excitedly inside her cot. Veronica lifted her gently and kissed her forehead.
“Good morning, my princess.”
The baby responded with a small sound that made Veronica laugh.
She carried her downstairs, where Mama Umoru was already preparing breakfast.
“You're awake early,” Mama Umoru said.
“She woke me.”
Mama Umoru smiled.
“She knows how to get what she wants.”
Veronica placed the baby in her grandmother's arms.
“Take her for a few minutes. Let me help you.”
Mama Umoru accepted the child happily.
For several minutes, everything felt ordinary.
Then Daniel came downstairs.
His expression was different.
He looked distracted.
Veronica noticed immediately.
“Good morning.”
“Morning.”
She studied his face.
“Is everything okay?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Yes.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“That wasn't a convincing yes.”
Mama Umoru glanced at them but said nothing.
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“I received a call this morning.”
“From who?”
“My business partner.”
Veronica waited.
“He said there's a problem with the company account.”
Her smile disappeared.
“What kind of problem?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Some money is missing.”
Mama Umoru looked up.
“How much?”
Daniel mentioned the amount.
Silence filled the kitchen.
Veronica knew it was not a small amount.
“What happened?” she asked.
“I don't know yet. He said the transaction was made using one of the company's authorized accounts.”
“Could someone have stolen it?”
“That's what we're trying to find out.”
Daniel stood.
“I need to go there.”
Veronica nodded.
“Do you want me to come with you?”
“No. Stay here with the baby.”
He kissed their daughter before turning toward the door.
Veronica watched him leave.
Something about the situation made her uncomfortable.
She had promised herself that she would never again ignore the warning signs around her.
This time, however, she refused to jump to conclusions.
She trusted Daniel.
At least, she wanted to.
By afternoon, he still had not returned.
Veronica tried calling him.
The first call went unanswered.
The second went directly to voicemail.
She stared at her phone.
Mama Umoru noticed.
“Don't worry too much. He may be busy.”
“I know.”
But Veronica could not completely relax.
An hour later, Daniel finally called.
“Veronica?”
“Yes. Where are you?”
“I'm still at the office.”
“What did you find out?”
There was a pause.
“We discovered that the money was transferred to another account.”
“Whose account?”
“We're trying to identify it.”
Veronica frowned.
“Do you need help?”
“No. I'll handle it.”
His voice sounded tired.
“I'll come home later.”
“Okay.”
The call ended.
Veronica sat silently.
Something wasn't right.
She couldn't explain what it was, but she had learned that sometimes a person's silence could reveal more than their words.
That evening, Daniel arrived home much later than usual.
He looked exhausted.
Veronica was sitting in the living room with their daughter asleep against her chest.
She looked at him.
“You haven't eaten.”
“I know.”
“Let me get something for you.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I'm not hungry.”
Veronica studied him.
“What happened?”
“Nothing I can't handle.”
She stood.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I need you to tell me the truth.”
His expression changed.
“I am telling you the truth.”
“Are you?”
The question hung between them.
Daniel sighed.
“I don't know what else to say.”
“You came home worried. You received a call about missing money. You disappeared for hours, and now you're refusing to explain what is happening.”
“I told you what happened.”
“You told me part of it.”
Daniel looked away.
Veronica's voice softened.
“I am not accusing you of anything. I'm asking because I don't want us to return to the way things were before.”
He looked at her again.
“I understand.”
“Then talk to me.”
Daniel sat down.
For several seconds, he remained silent.
“The police may become involved.”
Veronica's eyes widened.
“Police?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the amount is large, and the transfer was made without authorization.”
“Do they think you did it?”
“I don't know.”
Veronica felt a chill move through her.
“Why would they suspect you?”
“Because I'm one of the people with access to the account.”
She sat beside him.
“Daniel, did you take that money?”
He looked shocked.
“No.”
“I had to ask.”
“I know.”
He reached for her hand.
“I swear to you, Veronica, I didn't touch it.”
She believed him.
But fear had already entered her heart.
The next morning, Daniel left early.
Before leaving, he kissed Veronica and promised to call.
This time, he did not return that evening.
Veronica waited until midnight.
Still nothing.
She called repeatedly.
No response.
At two in the morning, she heard a vehicle stop outside.
She rushed to the window.
A black car was parked near the gate.
Two men stepped out.
Veronica's heart began racing.
One of them walked toward the house and knocked.
She immediately woke Mama Umoru.
“Someone is outside.”
Mama Umoru came downstairs.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
The knocking came again.
“Open the door!”
A man's voice.
Mama Umoru looked frightened.
“Who are you?”
“We need to speak with Daniel.”
“He isn't here.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
The man knocked harder.
Veronica held her daughter close.
Then another voice came from outside.
“Mrs. Umoru?”
Veronica froze.
She recognized the voice.
It was Daniel's business partner.
Mama Umoru opened the door slightly.
“What happened?”
The man looked nervous.
“I'm sorry for coming this late.”
“Where is Daniel?”
He swallowed.
“That's why I'm here.”
Veronica stepped closer.
“What happened to my husband?”
The man looked directly at her.
“Daniel has been arrested.”
Veronica's body went cold.
“What?”
“He was taken to the station about an hour ago.”
Mama Umoru covered her mouth.
“Why?”
“They found something.”
“What did they find?” Veronica demanded.
The man hesitated.
“A record showing that the missing money was transferred using Daniel's authorization.”
Veronica shook her head.
“That is impossible.”
“I know what it looks like.”
“No. You don't understand. Daniel wouldn't steal from his own company.”
The man lowered his voice.
“There is more.”
Veronica's heart pounded.
“What?”
“The account that received the money isn't registered under Daniel's name.”
“Then whose name is it?”
The man looked at Mama Umoru before answering.
“Amara.”
Veronica stopped breathing for a moment.
The name she had hoped never to hear again had suddenly returned.
Amara.
The woman from Daniel's past.
The woman whose appearance had once nearly destroyed her marriage.
The woman who had promised to move forward with her own life.
Veronica's mind raced.
“That can't be true.”
“I saw the documents myself.”
“Where is Amara?”
“We don't know.”
Veronica looked down at her sleeping daughter.
Everything she had worked so hard to leave behind seemed to be returning.
The old secret.
The old betrayal.
The unanswered questions.
Only this time, there was something much more dangerous at stake.
Daniel's freedom.
Veronica turned toward the door.
“I need to see my husband.”
Mama Umoru grabbed her arm.
“You can't go alone.”
“I won't.”
The business partner stepped forward.
“I can take you.”
Veronica nodded.
Before leaving, she placed her daughter carefully in Mama Umoru's arms.
“Please stay with her.”
Mama Umoru held the baby tightly.
“Be careful.”
Veronica looked at her.
“I will.”
As she walked toward the waiting car, she felt a familiar fear returning.
But this time she was not the frightened young woman who had discovered her husband's secret.
She was a wife.
A mother.
And someone who had learned that truth could be painful, but ignorance could be even worse.
She had forgiven Daniel once.
She had chosen to trust him again.
Now she needed to discover whether that trust had been placed in the right person.
And somewhere, behind the disappearance of the money, was Amara.
Veronica looked out through the car window as the Umoru family home disappeared behind her.
She whispered to herself,
“This time, I will find the truth myself.”
The car disappeared into the darkness.
And Veronica had no idea that the truth waiting for her would force her to question everything she thought she knew about her husband.
