Veronica stared at the photograph.
Daniel stood beside Amara, smiling in a way she had never seen before. The date printed beneath the picture made her chest tighten.
She placed it on the table.
“Daniel, I need an explanation.”
He pulled out a chair and sat down.
“I made a terrible mistake.”
“That isn't an explanation.”
Amara remained near the doorway. “He told me he was going to marry me. Then, without warning, everything changed.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I cared about Amara, but our relationship had already ended before I met Veronica.”
Amara looked away.
“That isn't what you told me.”
Umoru raised his hand.
“Enough. We are not going to turn this house into a courtroom. Daniel, tell your wife the truth. No more hiding.”
Daniel took a long breath.
After his business failed, he had borrowed money from Amara's family. Their relationship had already become complicated by then. When Veronica came into his life, he knew he wanted to start again, but he was afraid to tell her about the debt and the unfinished problems from his past.
The photograph had been taken when Amara confronted him about the money.
“I should have told you everything before our wedding,” Daniel admitted. “Instead, I tried to handle it myself.”
Veronica's eyes filled with tears.
“You didn't only hide money from me. You hid another woman, too.”
“I know.”
“And now I'm pregnant.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.”
“That child deserves parents who can trust each other.”
Daniel stood.
“I don't expect you to forgive me tonight. But I'll spend the rest of my life proving that I can be honest with you.”
Amara quietly picked up her handbag.
“I came here angry,” she said. “But I don't want to destroy your marriage. I only wanted what was owed to my family.”
Umoru nodded.
“You will receive the money.”
Daniel looked at his father in surprise.
“I'll take responsibility for the debt,” Umoru continued. “But you will also learn from this. A family cannot survive on secrets.”
Amara left soon afterward.
The room became quiet.
Veronica walked toward the window. Outside, the evening sky was turning orange.
Daniel approached her but stopped a few steps away.
“I love you,” he said.
She didn't turn around.
“Love isn't enough when there is no honesty.”
“I understand.”
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Veronica placed a hand over her stomach.
“I don't know what tomorrow will look like, Daniel. But I'm willing to give you one chance to make things right.”
He nodded.
“One chance is more than I deserve.”
She finally faced him.
“Don't waste it.”
Daniel took her hand gently.
This time, there were no promises filled with grand words. There was only an agreement to rebuild what had been damaged—slowly, honestly and together.
Months later, their daughter was born.
When Umoru held his granddaughter for the first time, the stern expression he was known for disappeared completely.
Mama Umoru laughed through her tears.
Daniel stood beside Veronica, overwhelmed with happiness.
Their marriage had not become perfect overnight. There were still difficult conversations, old wounds and lessons they had to learn.
But they had discovered something more valuable than a perfect beginning.
They had chosen honesty after everything that nearly separated them.
And Veronica, once a stranger entering the Umoru household with nothing but hope, had become part of the family—not because everything had gone according to plan, but because she had found the courage to face the truth and decide what her future would be.
