Chapter XI: Between shadows and light

686 Words
The night stretched like a velvet veil over the camp. The fire crackled softly, casting dancing shadows on the tent canvases. The villagers and knights slept deeply, exhausted by recent events. But, at the edge of the camp, two figures still kept watch. Elara, leaning against a tree trunk, let her fingers brush over the pages of the ancient grimoire. Its pale light drew arabesques on her face, revealing both determination and fatigue. Beside her, Sans sat cross-legged, a blade of grass between his teeth—or rather, between his bones. "You should sleep, you know," he murmured, breaking the hushed silence. "I can't," she replied softly. "Too many things spinning in my head." Sans nodded slowly. He understood. Better than anyone. To lighten the mood, he threw in his usual humor: "You know, if you want, I can tell you a skeletal joke... But I wouldn't want it to be rib-tickling." A small laugh escaped Elara's lips, light but genuine. It was like a breath of fresh air in the stifling night. "Thank you, Sans. I don't know what I'd do without you." The skeleton, usually so elusive, seemed to freeze for a moment. His glowing blue gaze met the princess's. A hesitation, then he took a deep breath—or at least pretended to. "Elara... I wanted to say... After what happened, I... I still can't forgive myself. But... being by your side, it's like... like every joke, every smile becomes real. Like I finally have a reason to fight... for something more than survival." She took his hand, her warm fingers against his cold phalanges. The silence that followed was not heavy but filled with a gentle complicity. Gradually, Elara rested her head against Sans's bony shoulder, finding in this closeness an unexpected warmth. The princess felt her heart beat faster, a mix of comfort and confusion. Sans's bluish aura, both soft and mysterious, wrapped around her like a protective veil. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting herself be lulled by the skeleton's presence. Meanwhile, in the shadows, Ink and Error watched. One from the high branches, drawing small luminous constellations in the air, the other hidden in the darkness, pulling the threads of an invisible web. "They're getting closer," Ink whispered, a soft glow in his heterochromatic eyes. "Good," Error replied, his dark threads vibrating around him. "The more they get attached, the easier it will be to break this world." "Why? Why always destroy everything?" Error did not respond immediately. His red eyes shimmered in the night. "Because every attachment is a weakness. Because every world that blossoms ends up collapsing under the weight of its own hopes." In the camp, Elara suddenly felt a strange pulse emanating from the grimoire. She sat up, breaking the gentle embrace with Sans. The pages, as if animated by their own will, turned rapidly, revealing changing symbols, a shimmering script that seemed to dance before their eyes. "Look at this..." she murmured, captivated. The grimoire revealed a hidden chapter. Illustrations showed a crowned woman, surrounded by golden light, her hands reaching out to creatures both human and magical. Ancient lines spoke of "the heir of the glow," a chosen one capable of merging human magic with that of monsters. "Is... is it talking about me?" Sans, still troubled by the closeness of their previous exchange, regained his composure. His eyes shone with a blue light, but this time, it seemed to vibrate with a deeper, almost palpable emotion. "It sure looks like it. Elara, this grimoire might show you how to awaken your powers. Maybe even... how to save your kingdom." A shiver ran through the princess. Between the gentle warmth of the moment shared with Sans and the immense responsibility now resting on her shoulders, she felt at a crossroads. Her mind wavered between the desire to snuggle against him and the need to be strong for her people. And, hidden in the shadows, Ink and Error continued to weave their own story. For if Elara was to become a queen of light, they knew that darkness was never far away...
