Chapter 19 1892, Southampton The summer heat gave way to autumn cool. Leander continued to work at his sermons and take care of the parishioners. He corresponded with Father John and Raphael. One Saturday afternoon, he was in the study rereading one of Raphael’s letters he had received earlier in the week. Dearest Lee, I am writing to let you know things are getting along fine here in Liverpool. The parish house is a bit run down, but comfortable. The church building is falling apart, but the verger and sexton do their best to keep it up. The parish wants me to go to the jail here and minister to the criminals. I am so torn. I know it is my job to do Christ’s work, but a jail? Maybe I will train them to be ministers? What do you think? Please advise and let me know how you’re getting
