“You understand these are very serious accusations?” Charles asked gravely.
Before Mr. Shocking could answer, Mrs. Shocking said, “We understand completely.. Can you imagine what this has done to our marriage?”
Charles tried to smile, to give comfort. “I’m sure it has been quite a strain. Tell me, how long have you been married?”
“Fifteen very long years,” Mrs. Shocking said, not giving her husband a chance to answer.
“Any children?”
“No, but not for the lack of trying in the beginning.” She looked him in the eye, but blushed slightly.
“Mr. Shocking, have you had a s****l affair with Reverend Norris?”
