1904, Southampton
Even though they were up late the night before, Peter woke up very early the next morning. Leander drowsily made breakfast and prepared Peter for the day nursery. He had one more day without Mrs. Dawson’s help. He thought about asking her to come in earlier and leave later. He didn’t know how that would sit with her after all these years.
In his head, the arrangement was perfect. She would come in, wake Peter, get him ready, and the three of them could breakfast together. Peter would go to the day nursery during the day. Leander would pick him up before tea and spend the evening with the boy.
He wasn’t surprised when he saw her expression when she arrived the next day, her air less than welcoming.
“But where did he come from?” she asked. She stared at Pete
