Chapter 39 1911, Southampton Leander woke in the middle of the night. At first, he thought he was back in his bed in the parish house, but soon he realized he was in jail. His groin was soaked from the nocturnal emission caused by the dream. He got up and cleaned himself as best he could and lay back down on the hard bed. The kiss he relived in his dreams, Basil’s first kiss, started chipping away at his strength to protest the situation. He knew that kiss was why he was in prison. And yet, Basil hadn’t so much as sent a letter during the eighteen months of his confinement. It’s not to say that if Emil had lived that they wouldn’t have been caught.
