A Week Apart The school cafeteria buzzed with the chatter of students and teachers as Maddy and her friend and co-teacher, Margareth, sat down for lunch. Maddy couldn't help but smile as she looked around at the familiar faces, her heart filled with warmth at the sight of her colleagues and the sound of children's laughter echoing through the halls. "So, Maddy, how was your week off?" Margareth asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "You disappeared so suddenly, I was starting to worry about you!" Maddy chuckled, taking a sip of her coffee before replying. "It was amazing, Margareth," she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I went up to the Pacific Northwest and spent the week in the wilderness. It was like nothing I've ever experienced before." Margareth's eyes widened in surprise. "The wilderness? You mean, like, camping and hiking and stuff?" Maddy nodded, a smile playing on her lips as she recalled her adventures in the rugged landscape of the Pacific Northwest. "Exactly," she replied. "I stayed in a cabin deep in the forest, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and trees as far as the eye could see. It was breathtaking." Margareth leaned in closer, her interest piqued. "Tell me more," she urged, her curiosity evident in her tone. "What was it like? Did you see any wildlife? Were there bears?" Maddy laughed, shaking her head, at her friend's eagerness. "No bears, thankfully," she said, her voice tinged with amusement. "But I did see plenty of other wildlife—deer, squirrels, even a family of raccoons. And the scenery was incredible, Margareth. Mountains towering over crystal-clear lakes, forests stretching out as far as the eye could see. It was like something out of a postcard." Margareth listened intently, her eyes wide with wonder, as Maddy recounted her adventures in the wilderness. But behind the excitement, there was a hint of sadness in her friend's voice, a longing for something she had left behind. "You sound like you had an amazing time, Maddy," Margareth said, her voice soft with empathy. "But I couldn't help but notice... you seem a little sad." Maddy sighed, her gaze drifting to the window where she could see the playground filled with children laughing and playing. "I guess I just miss being around the kids," she admitted, her voice tinged with longing. "It's been a week since I've seen them, and it feels like a lifetime." Margareth reached out and squeezed Maddy's hand, a sympathetic smile on her lips. "I know it's hard being away from them, Maddy," she said gently. "But just think of all the stories you'll have to tell them when you get back. And in the meantime, you can always come and visit them during recess. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to see you." Maddy nodded, grateful for her friend's understanding and support. As they finished their lunch and made plans to visit the playground together, she couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the people in her life who made even the toughest moments a little bit easier to bear. And as she looked forward to reuniting with her students, she knew that her week in the wilderness had been worth every moment. As Maddy and Margareth made their way to the playground, the sound of children's laughter grew louder, filling the air with a sense of joy and excitement. Maddy's heart swelled with anticipation at the thought of seeing her students again, her footsteps quickening with each passing moment. As they approached the playground, Maddy's eyes scanned the crowd of children, searching for familiar faces among the throng of eager youngsters. And then, amidst the chaos of running feet and flying balls, she spotted them: a group of her students playing tag in the center of the playground. With a joyful cry, Maddy raced forward, her arms outstretched as she called out to her students. "Hey, you guys!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with delight. "It's so good to see you!" The children turned at the sound of her voice, their faces breaking into wide smiles as they caught sight of their beloved teacher. With shouts of excitement, they rushed forward to greet her, their arms wrapping around her in a flurry of hugs and laughter. "Maddy, you're back!" one of the children exclaimed, her eyes shining with joy. "We missed you so much!" Maddy laughed, her heart overflowing with love for her students. "I missed you too, sweetie," she replied, her voice soft with affection. "But I'm here now, and I can't wait to hear all about what you've been up to." As the children clamored to tell her about their week, Maddy's heart swelled with happiness at the thought of being back with her students. They shared stories and jokes, played games, and raced around the playground, their laughter mingling with the sound of birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. As Maddy watched her students interact with each other, their faces glowing with happiness and excitement, she knew that this was where she belonged. During the chaos and the laughter, surrounded by the innocence and wonder of childhood, she found a sense of purpose and fulfillment that filled her with gratitude and joy. As the afternoon wore on and the sun began to dip below the horizon, Maddy reluctantly said goodbye to her students, promising to see them again soon. And as she walked away from the playground, her heart lighter than it had been in days, she knew that she had found her true calling in life: to nurture young minds and hearts, to inspire and uplift, and to make a difference in the lives of her students, one day at a time. As Maddy made her way home from school, the memories of her day with her students were still fresh in her mind. She couldn't shake the feeling of contentment that filled her heart. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the city streets as she walked, the familiar sights and sounds of her neighborhood comforting in their familiarity. Arriving at her small flat on the third floor of the apartment building, Maddy unlocked the door and stepped inside, the warmth of the cozy space enveloping her like a familiar embrace. She kicked off her shoes and dropped her bag by the door before making her way to the kitchen, where she grabbed a slice of leftover pizza from the fridge and poured herself a glass of cola. As she sat at the small table in her kitchen, savoring the simple meal, Maddy's thoughts drifted to John and the time they had spent together in the wilderness. She wondered what he was doing now if he was thinking of her as she was thinking of him. With a sigh, Maddy finished her dinner and carried her plate to the sink, where she washed it and set it aside to dry. Then, she made her way to the living room, where she settled onto the couch and turned on the TV, flipping through the channels until she found her favorite movie, "A Walk to Remember." As she watched the familiar scenes play out on the screen, Maddy couldn't help but be reminded of her time with John. The tender love story and the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Northwest brought back memories of their shared adventures and the deep connection they had formed in the wilderness. Lost in thought, Maddy glanced at the clock and realized how late it was getting. With a yawn, she stretched her arms and made her way to the bedroom, where she changed into a silk sleeveless top and shorts before crawling into bed. As she lay there in the darkness, the soft glow of the TV casting shadows across the room, Maddy's thoughts drifted back to John. She wondered what he was doing now if he was thinking of her as she was thinking of him. As she drifted off to sleep, a smile played on her lips at the thought of the rugged man with the sad eyes and the gentle smile that had captured her heart in the wilderness.
