Chapter 3

It wasn't that I hadn't tried to quit before. I failed. Last winter, I finally hit my limit and begged Sean's father, Richard, to let me go. I told him I wasn't cut out for the job. He hesitated, but he was about to agree. But somehow, Sean found out. That night, he smashed an entire wall of decorative glass in his office. Shards exploded everywhere. I stood frozen at the doorway, broken glass scattered around my feet. Sean looked at me and asked, "You're leaving?" I was too scared to answer. Sean walked over slowly and grabbed my chin, forcing me to look up at him. His grip hurt so badly that it felt like my bones were cracking. "Where exactly do you think you're going? Tell me. How about I bankrupt that company and liquidate their assets—as a gift to you?" He smiled. That smile was scarier than if he'd been angry. In the end, he didn't bankrupt that company. Instead, he made me stand in his office all night. From eight in the evening until six the next morning. No food. No water. No tears. No sitting. No leaning against the wall. No phone. My legs were swollen for three days afterward. Walking felt like torture. Then Sean personally came to my apartment with ointment medicine. He crouched down in front of me and gently rubbed it onto my legs. His voice was soft. "Am I not good to you? Why do you want to leave?" After that, I never brought it up again. No one in the company dared to take my place since. And now, finally, some fearless i***t named Lena would willingly jump into the fire pit herself. Part of me worried she was all talk. Part of me worried she'd fail and somehow drag me down with her. By the time I returned to the office, I was still restless. Sean sat behind his desk reading documents. When he heard the door open, he lazily lifted his eyes toward me. That single glance sent a chill straight down my spine. "What took you so long?" "I went to Finance to pick up my check. Ran into a few coworkers on the way back and talked for a bit." The office fell silent. Cold sweat slowly formed across my back. After a long moment, Sean suddenly smiled, his tone softening. "Your paycheck, huh? That's important." Then he crooked a finger at me. "Come here." I walked over slowly. He leaned back in his chair, looking lazy and slightly tired. I bent down automatically, just like always. He liked it when I did that. His hand rested against my back, stroking lightly. "Who were you talking to out there today?" My heart tightened instantly. "Just a few new female employees. Nothing serious." He stared at me for two seconds before suddenly grabbing my chin. "They envy you, don't they?" "I don't know." "Liar." Sean laughed quietly. "Who wouldn't envy you? You get to follow me every day, wearing things I gave you. Things others can only dream of." I lowered my eyes and stayed silent. He watched me for a while before finally letting go. "I'm leaving for a business trip tomorrow." I froze. "I'll be back in three days." My heartbeat suddenly sped up. Three days. If Lena went to Richard during that time, this might actually be my chance.
