Chapter 4

I didn't dare let any emotion show on my face. I just lowered my head even further. Sean patted my back lightly. "Don't miss me too much." I forced out a smile. "I'll be good and wait for you to come back." That seemed to satisfy him. He leaned down and kissed my forehead softly. "Good girl." The next morning, Sean left for the airport for real. Around noon, Richard's secretary, Susan Hall, came to find me. "That new girl from yesterday, Lena, did go to see Mr. Richard Shaw." She sounded exhausted already. "She told him your workload isn't even that heavy, but you're making one hundred and fifty grand. She said she'd take over for forty thousand. As a Harvard grad, she was no less capable than you." My fingers trembled slightly. "What did he say?" Susan sighed, "Of course, he refused at first. But that girl kept saying that she was young, hardworking, full of ambition, that the company should give young people opportunities. Then she started badmouthing you. Said Sean favored you, and you just sat around acting important while the senior employees secretly hated you." She rubbed her temples. "Mr. Shaw got so fed up and asked some of us senior employees what we thought. Honestly, we've all been worried about you for years. If you stayed beside Sean any longer, he'd destroy you. Now that someone else is willing to take over... maybe this is your chance to step down." My nose stung instantly. Finally! Freedom! I went to Richard's office to thank him personally. Richard slowly spun a pen between his fingers and sighed. "You've suffered enough these past few years. I know exactly what Sean's personality is like. You're a good girl. If you want to leave, then leave. The contract's been terminated. Your compensation package is ready too. Leave this city. Find somewhere nobody knows you and live a normal life." My eyes turned red immediately. "Thank you, sir." He looked away from me. "Go. Hurry before he comes back." I was just about to return to my office and pack my things when Lena arrived. She brought two admin assistants with her, both carrying storage boxes. The second she stepped onto the executive floor, she walked like she already owned the place. Lena stopped in front of me, chin raised high, smiling without an ounce of humility. "Mr. Richard Shaw approved everything. From now on, I'll be handling all of Mr. Sean Shaw's affairs." Then she paused on purpose, eyes sweeping across my face. "You can stop pretending now. The company's wanted to replace you for a long time anyway. Crazy salary, bad attitude." The way she said it, you'd think she was catching her boyfriend's mistress instead of taking over a job. I looked at her face. And all I felt was pure joy. She'd really become Sean's PA! I finally wouldn't have to drink for Sean anymore. Wouldn't have to wonder which glass might kill me next. Seeing me stay quiet, Lena frowned. "What's with that look? You upset?" I bit back my smile. "No, not at all." "Then hurry up and clear out your desk." My workstation was right beside Sean's office. Whenever something went wrong at work, he'd lose it, and I'd have to drop everything to calm him down. I'd sat at that desk for years, my heart in my throat every second, terrified he'd snap. If Lena wanted it, she could have it. "Okay," I said softly before turning to pack. But my obedience seemed to annoy her instead. She suddenly snapped at the two assistants behind her. "Go. Throw all her stuff out." I froze. Then she grabbed my wrist, her eyes locking onto the watch I was wearing. "And this too." Lena immediately tried pulling it off. Instinctively, I tried to pull away. Lena laughed coldly. "What? Can't bear to part with it? You're already leaving, and you're still wearing something Mr. Shaw gave you around like a trophy?" She yanked hard enough to hurt. The second the watch was yanked off my wrist, I actually felt relieved. Lena immediately fastened it onto her own wrist. She lifted her arm toward the light again and again, unable to hide the excitement on her face. "See? It looks way better on me." Then she glanced sideways at me. "Stuff like this belongs with the right person." I didn't respond. My seat cushion, coffee mug, little desk plants, everything got tossed into the hallway. Lena stood in the doorway looking down at me. "Alright. Pack your crap and get out." I crouched on the floor gathering my belongings. And honestly? I didn't feel humiliated at all. I was happy. Before I walked out of the company building, I looked up at the sky. The clouds that had covered it all day finally cracked open, letting sunlight spill through. I wanted to laugh and cry. I was finally free. Then suddenly, the bodyguards at the door snapped to attention. "Boss is back!"
