LAYLA
“Well done, Layla. You are one step ahead,” a male voice echoed in my head. I froze, a bit surprised by where the voice was coming from.
“Who’s that!?” I asked. I know I was the only one on the cliff when I morphed back into my human form. Was I followed by someone from the pack?
“I'm your wolf. My name is Czar. Your Alpha wolf bonded together with your vampire blood power, which hasn't been awoken yet. We are waiting for the right time,” Czar said, and I stumbled back, almost crashing to the ground.
“W - W -– What??? A male wolf?!? How is that possible? It's never been heard of or written down in any book that a female can possess a male wolf. This is so confusing!”
I was confused about everything. Everything was strange. It wasn't making sense to me, everything seemed confusing, and I could not wrap my head around it.
“You’re a special breed, Layla. You are different from everybody, you are unique. You are not just an ordinary hybrid; you are blessed by the Moon Goddess,” Czar said.
“Special in what way? I need you to explain this further to me please?” I pleaded.
“It's not in my place to tell you anything about that; Selene will be the one to tell you about it soon. All I can say is that we should go back to the pack so that we can show your dominance to your people,” Czar said before blocking the link.
I morphed back into my wolf form and hurried back home to the packhouse. When I got home, my parents, Ralph, Carla, and Jody were waiting for me. When they saw me, they all stood up to meet me while Carla tossed me an oversize t-shirt to put on, which I did.
“I'm sorry, Dad, Mum, and everyone... I just needed to run away, with the way you all were looking at me as if I was possessed or something. I - I - I mean what's wrong?” I asked.
“You’re an Alpha. That was just surprising to everyone, not that it was a bad thing, we’re just shocked at the sudden development,” Alpha Braxton (Dad) said.
“I know about that but wait till you hear the surprise I have for you all!” I announced, which made them anxious.
“Tell us already! You're toying with our patience,” Carla said, shaking me severely.
“I have a male wolf! The Moon Goddess decided to bless me by giving me a male wolf and not a female wolf. In all the books I have read, there was nothing that described a female having a male wolf. What should I do? What does it mean? Is it a bad omen or a good one?” I asked them.
“A male wolf!!!" my mom yelled.
“Dad, did you hear what she said or am I the only one that heard it right? Geez, how weird can you get?” Ralph muttered.
“Shhh!” Jody silenced him. “She is your sister!”
“I know I'm weird, but I didn't choose to be born this way. I didn't expect this from you all! What do you want me to do? Kill me?!” I asked him bitterly. “Well, I don't plan on doing that, I have a pack to rule and to find the meaning of what I am or what I am becoming.”
I was about to leave when Dad pulled me back.
“I know what you are, hold on.” Alpha Braxton walked into another room and soon came back with a box. He opened it. It contained ancient scrolls I'd never seen before, neither had my mum nor Ralph, because they all seemed shocked.
Alpha Braxton brought out a scroll that read ‘The Black Hybrid’ in bold lettering.
“The Black Hybrid? What does it mean?” I asked him as I examined the scroll.
“This is your true nature – a hybrid born of a vampire and a werewolf. A wolf bigger than a normal werewolf, having an Alpha and a male wolf. He doesn’t shift to the complete hybrid form until he or she tastes the blood of their mate. That’s what will trigger the final transformation. He or she will be different from regular werewolves, stronger, faster, even more so than werewolves or vampires. The healing rate is twice as fast as any mystical being; sight and hearing, clearer than ever; good, and the wolf’s fur is jet black. Does any of that ring a bell to you?” my dad asked.
“I haven't seen my mate, so I wouldn't know about that, but the male wolf, yeah it does, and I haven’t tried out the speed yet,” I told him honestly.
“Want to check it out?” my dad asked, probably more curious than I was, and I nodded my head.
We walked to the field and we both morphed into our wolf form. My dad was said to have the biggest wolf in the pack, but he seemed quite small when standing close to me.
‘Ready?’ he asked through the mind link, and I gave a quick nod. Ralph blew the whistle and off we went! At first, my dad was taking the lead, and I could hear Czar growling in my head in anger as he increased the pace. But we quickly overtook my dad, leaving a huge gap between us as we rushed to the finish line.
It took my dad three minutes before he could get to the finish line after us and we shifted back into our human form.
“Do you see the difference now?” he asked amusingly.
“Yes, Dad, I do. I am the Black Hybrid I guess, another weird name added to the list. I wonder what they will think of me this time around,” I muttered to myself, annoyed.
“That shouldn't be the issue; the issue is the people and what they will actually say. Remember, no female wolf is allowed to rule the pack, especially a hybrid that is said to be cursed,” dad informed me, reminding me of my predicament.
“Thanks for the much-needed reminder, Dad…,” I said sarcastically.
“That wasn't what I meant, love. Don't get me wrong, you’d be a great leader. I was….”
“I understand, Dad, and I won’t allow what they say to get to me. This time around, I won't allow them to bully me into giving up what was destined to be mine by the Moon Goddess. I will lead the Silver Crest pack even if it means shedding my blood for people to trust me!” I told him emphatically while beating my chest with my fist.
“Give it up, sis,” Ralph sighed. “It doesn't matter to them if you’ve been blessed ten thousand times; you'll be wasting your time and blood because I don't think they will ever accept you. I hate them for treating you this way, but another thing I hate is the fact that you could get hurt because of them. Let it go. When Dad's tenure is over, another Alpha will take the position,” Ralph said, and I growled.
“Give the Alpha position to someone that isn't from our pack?” I hissed again.
“Yeah, there is probably a pack that has two Alphas. We will ask one of them to rule us,” Luna Eva explained in more detail to me.
“I will never allow that, not when I am alive! It wasn't an accident that I got an Alpha wolf. It means the Moon Goddess wants me to lead, and I will lead! Whatever they dish out, I will take in all of them and show them that I am fit to lead this pack.”
“Layla,” Dad said, trying to place his hands on my shoulder to soothe me. I took a few steps away from him.
“I might be the cursed child not worthy of being alive, but as long as the Moon Goddess has given me something to be proud of and happy about, I won't stop until I have what is rightfully mine.”
With that, I stormed into my room, throwing anything my hands could get before I roared out in anger.
After this experience, I’ve now vowed not to give anyone a second chance. If the pack wants to fear me and label me the cursed one, I’ll make sure they know exactly what they’re fearing.
