Chapter 4 : THE CHOICE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
The other part of me knew that second chances often end the same way as the first—just with more shattered pieces.
As I lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, I realized something.
Adrian was my past. Daniel was my present.
But I had no idea which one would shape my tomorrow.
And maybe, just maybe, that choice would break me all over again.
I didn’t sleep that night.
Even with the exhaustion weighing on me, my mind refused to rest. Adrian’s words echoed in my head, his presence still lingering in the air like a ghost that refused to leave.
“Is it too late?”
I wanted to say yes. I wanted to be certain that I had moved on, that I had closed that chapter of my life for good. But the truth sat heavy in my chest.
I wasn’t sure.
And uncertainty was dangerous.
The next morning, I sat at my kitchen counter, staring at my untouched coffee. The warmth had faded, much like the clarity I thought I had gained when I first left Adrian behind.
A knock on the door pulled me out of my thoughts. My heart skipped, a foolish part of me expecting Adrian again.
But when I opened it, it was Daniel.
He held up a paper bag with a small, knowing smile. “I figured you might need breakfast.”
I exhaled, a wave of relief washing over me. “You’re seriously too nice to me.”
Daniel smirked. “I’m actually just bribing you with food so you’ll tell me what’s on your mind.”
I rolled my eyes but stepped aside to let him in.
We sat at the small dining table, the scent of coffee and fresh pastries filling the space between us.
“He came to see me last night,” I admitted after a long silence.
Daniel’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his eyes. “And?”
I let out a slow breath. “He wants another chance.”
Daniel set his coffee down, studying me carefully. “What do you want, Maya?”
That was the question I had been avoiding. Because I didn’t have an answer.
I looked down at my hands, my fingers tracing the rim of my cup. “I don’t know. I loved him, Daniel. I loved him in a way that consumed me. But he also broke me.”
Daniel didn’t say anything right away. When he finally spoke, his voice was gentle but firm. “Love shouldn’t destroy you, Maya.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I know.”
“Then why are you still holding on?”
I squeezed my eyes shut. “Because it’s hard to let go of something that once felt like everything.”
Daniel was quiet for a long time before he finally leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly. “Maya, you don’t owe him another chance. You don’t owe him anything.”
I nodded, but deep down, I knew it wasn’t that simple.
Because a part of me wasn’t sure if I was ready to say goodbye.
The days passed in a blur.
Adrian didn’t call. He didn’t show up again. And with every moment of silence, I should have felt relief.
Instead, all I felt was the weight of the choice hanging over me.
Daniel was right—I didn’t owe Adrian anything.
But closure wasn’t always about owing.
Sometimes, it was about finding a way to put the past to rest.
And I wasn’t sure I had done that yet.
That’s why, one evening, I found myself standing in front of the one place I never thought I’d return to.
Adrian’s apartment.
He looked surprised when he opened the door, but only for a second. Then his lips curved into that familiar smirk—the one that had once made my heart race.
“Maya,” he breathed.
I stepped inside before I could change my mind.
The place was exactly the same. The same dim lighting, the same faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air. The same memories trapped within these walls.
Memories of love. Memories of heartbreak.
I turned to face him. “I need to know something, Adrian.”
He nodded slowly. “Anything.”
I inhaled sharply. “Why now? Why, after all this time, do you suddenly decide you want me back?”
Adrian ran a hand through his hair, exhaling. “Because losing you was the biggest mistake of my life. And I was too much of a coward to admit it until now.”
I shook my head. “No. That’s not good enough.”
His jaw tightened. “What do you want me to say, Maya? That I was a selfish i***t? That I took you for granted? That I let my own demons ruin something beautiful?”
I swallowed hard. “Yes.”
Adrian stepped closer, his eyes locking onto mine. “I hurt you, Maya. And if I could take it all back, I would. But I can’t. All I can do is tell you that I still love you. That I never stopped.”
Tears burned at the back of my eyes.
“Love isn’t enough, Adrian.”
He reached for my hand, but I pulled away.
“Maya—”
I took a shaky breath. “I came here for closure. And I think I finally have it.”
Adrian’s face fell, pain flashing through his eyes. “So… this is it?”
I nodded. “This is it.”
For the first time in years, I felt something I never thought I would.
Freedom.
As I walked away from Adrian’s apartment, the weight on my chest finally lifted.
I had spent so long being torn between yesterday and tomorrow, trapped between the past and the future.
But now, I was choosing today.
And for the first time in a long time, I knew exactly where I wanted to be.
