P.O.V: Amara
"Mom!" I come running into the house throwing my bags onto the couch not worried about putting them away for the moment. "Mom where are you?"
"Amara, I'm in the office." I hear her voice carried through the hall and follow it into the small office my mom and dad share in the back of the house.
"Mom, I need to talk to you about something."
"Is everything okay? You look stressed." My mom looks up with concern and I feel bad for a moment for worrying her like that.
"I'm okay just something weird happened while I was at the mall with Jenny." I sit down and tell her everything that had gone down with Angela and then wait for my mom's reaction.
"Has Angela been bullying you like this for a while or is it new? Why haven't you talked to me about it before?" I am in complete shock. It's like she missed the whole section about Angela being knocked off her feet without anyone touching her.
"Mom, you missed the point. Angela was pushed back but Jenny and I didn't touch her at all. What is happening? Is that normal for a shifter?" I can see my mom thinking before she gives me her answer.
"Honey she probably just tripped on something or lost her footing. Don't think about it to much. I don't want you fighting anymore and if Angela causes any more problems than you need to tell us."
"But mom..." My mom holds her hand up to cut me off.
"Amara that's enough. We aren't talking about it anymore. Why don't you go rest? You will need your energy for your first shift tonight. I realize that my mom isn't going to talk about it anymore and decide to give up. I am getting so frustrated. My mom shut me down and Sky wouldn't even talk to me about it anymore. Why is everyone hiding something from me? More importantly is what are they hiding from me? I grab my bags and head upstairs to put everything away. I wonder if I can make it happen again. Maybe if I can then my mom might believe me or try to convince me it was all in my head. I look around my room trying to find something to try and move when I settle on my family picture on my dresser.
How do I do this Sky?
I'm not really sure. It's not a wolf thing.
You’re talking to me now? I cross my arms in front of me to emphasize my irritation with her.
I'll always talk to you. I just don't have the answers that you want. I know that you are special and that we will be changing soon. I also know that Jenny is very important to us. I just don't know exactly what all that means yet. I uncross my arms and smile.
I understand Sky. I'm sorry I was mad at you. I can feel the shift in her mood and then excitement takes over her.
Maybe if we focus on something and think about moving it.
That’s a good idea Sky. I look at the picture frame and imagine it flying off the desk. Nothing happens. I roll my shoulders and focus in on the picture frame again this time trying to really focus on the frame moving. Nothing. I sigh, roll my shoulders, and focus in again.
"Move!" Still nothing happens.
Why isn't this working? I almost sound like I’m whining and immediately get angry with myself for it. Get a grip on yourself Amara. Stop whining like a child.
Maybe it's about how you’re feeling when it happens. Maybe Sky is onto something. I look at the picture frame again this time I focus in on the memory of what happened with Angela. I let myself start to feel the anger and fear I had felt in that moment. I can tell Sky is also feeling the same anger she had felt earlier. Suddenly, the picture frame goes flying off the dresser and hits the wall landing on the floor. Oh, my goddess. I did it I made it move. I focus in on the frame again this time it is easier to pull up those emotions. This time the frame goes skittering across my carpet. I gasp then start hopping in place as I begin to giggle. The excitement is spilling out of me.
We did it Sky! We moved the frame. Then it hits me. This isn't a normal shifter ability. How am I doing this? Oh no I am a freak. I realize I can't show my mom. What if this makes me dangerous? What if I can't stay in the pack? I can feel the panic rising inside of me.
Calm down Amara. You are not dangerous; you are important though. Our pack will love us and so does our family. Breathe special girl. I take a few deep breaths and sit down on the edge of my bed. I am still so scared, but Sky has helped to calm me down some. What would I do without her?
Thank you, Sky. I should probably wait to talk to my mom about it again until I better understand it. I lay back on my bed and close my eyes. I am suddenly very tired and decide a short nap won't hurt.
You’re going to change the world. I hear Sky say but I fall asleep before I can respond to her.
"Amara it's getting late." My eyes flutter open as I hear my mom's voice drifting up the staircase. "You need to eat something, so you have energy for tonight. I rub my eyes and look at the clock to see that it is 7:30 at night. I had slept away the rest of the afternoon. I sit up and look around noticing that the picture frame is still sitting in the middle of my floor. I scope it up and place it on my dresser as I think about what had happened this afternoon. What am I going to do? I don’t know how long I will be able to hide it from my mom. What happens if I get mad and it happens again? I let out a big sign before heading downstairs. I am going to just stop thinking about it for tonight. I will be shifting for the first time tonight so that needs to be my focus.
I sit down with my family at the table, they continue with their conversation as if they don't even notice I have sat down and I am thankful for that. I am not really in a chatty mood and am content to sit in silence as I pick at my food. I feel like time has stopped sitting there until my dad’s voice breaks though to me.
"You ready sweetheart?" He is smiling at me, and I try to force a smile back. I am so nervous. What if something happens during my shift?
"Yeah, I guess so. I don't think you can really be ready for the first shift." My dad chuckles lightly.
"Yeah I guess you’re right. Why don't you go get ready so we can head out?” My mom is already clearing the table as I head upstairs to change. Shifters are comfortable in their nudity but for our first shift we try to offer a sense of modesty since it's a vulnerable time. I put on the loose dress my mom had bought me and bring an extra set of clothes just in case. I take one last look in the mirror and am surprised that I don't look as worried as I feel.
Special girl you've got this. Sky tries to encourage me, and I do feel a sense of warmth and calm fill my body slowly.
Thanks Sky. You are amazing. I take one last deep breath and head back downstairs to find my family waiting by the door. My mom smiles and wraps her arms around me as we head out the door and walk towards the edge of the forest behind our house. As we get closer to the edge, I see two figures standing there. It doesn't take Long for me to realize it is our Alpha and Luna. Why are they here? They don't usually show up to the first shift of wolves that aren't higher ranks. I wonder if it's because my brother is set to be the next Beta.
"Amara, you look beautiful darling. Are you ready for your shift?" Luna Sheri wraps me in huge hug. She is such a kind woman and a compassionate Luna. The pack absolutely loves her and respect her just as much as Alpha Luke. I hug her back and for a second, I don't want to let go. She has such a calming effect on me. "You've got this, and we are here to support you fully." She pulls back rubbing my arms one last time and returns to Alpha Luke’s side. He smiles at me and though he doesn't say anything I feel safe with him there.
My family is standing to one side with the Alpha and Luna standing to the other side. My mom gives me a kiss on the forehead before going to stand without family. I close my eyes, taking a deep breath and as I do I smell that intoxicating aroma again. I open my eyes just as his deep voice fills the space around us.
"MATE!" Everyone turns to look as Carter steps into the space in front of me just as I feel my body starting to shift. I feel my bones breaking and shifting as I hit the ground on all fours groaning from the pain. I can feel the fur sprouting up all over my body as I change but then I start to feel a new sensation. My body is humming with energy, and I can hear a crackling sound in the air. I am looking at everyone in front of me, but something is wrong. My body is still humming even though I have full shifted into my wolf. Everyone is staring at me with wide eyes and their mouths open in shock.
Sky what is going on?
