CHAPTER 6
The Betrayal
The drive back to the city was silent.
Chloe sat in the passenger seat, staring through the window as rain blurred the lights outside.
The photograph was still in her hand.
Three people.
Her.
Andrian.
Elena.
Someone had taken the picture while they were inside that room.
Someone had been close enough to hear everything.
Chloe finally broke the silence.
“Where are we going?”
“My house.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I don't trust the office anymore.”
“And you trust your house?”
“I have better security there.”
Chloe looked back at the window.
“That's reassuring.”
Andrian glanced at her.
“You're not afraid?”
“I am.”
He looked surprised.
“But I'm tired of being afraid of things nobody will explain.”
Andrian didn't answer.
After a moment, he said quietly, “Fair enough.”
---
Andrian's house was unlike anything Chloe expected.
It was modern, spacious, and surprisingly quiet.
He unlocked the door and stepped inside.
“Stay here.”
“Again?”
He looked at her.
“I'm checking the security system.”
Chloe sighed.
“Fine.”
While Andrian walked through the house, Chloe noticed a shelf filled with old photographs.
She walked closer.
Most were family pictures.
Then she saw one that made her stop.
Andrian's father was standing beside several people.
One of them was Chloe's father.
Chloe stared at the photograph.
“That's impossible.”
Andrian appeared behind her.
“What?”
She pointed.
“Your father and mine knew each other before the case.”
Andrian looked at the photograph.
His expression darkened.
“I've never seen this.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He took the photograph from the shelf.
On the back was a date.
August 3, 2009.
Three years before the case.
Chloe looked at him.
“They weren't enemies.”
“No.”
“They were friends.”
Andrian said nothing.
Then he noticed something else.
A small symbol had been drawn in the corner of the photograph.
A circle with a line through it.
He recognized it.
“That's the same symbol from Exhibit 17.”
Chloe frowned.
“What does it mean?”
“I don't know.”
“Your father might.”
Andrian's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His father's name appeared.
He answered.
“Dad.”
The voice on the other end sounded tense.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Are you with Chloe?”
Andrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
There was a long silence.
Then his father said:
“Listen to me carefully. Don't trust Elena.”
Andrian frowned.
“Why?”
“She betrayed us.”
The call ended.
Chloe stared at him.
“What did he say?”
Andrian hesitated.
“He said we shouldn't trust Elena.”
Chloe looked at the photograph.
“Do you believe him?”
Andrian didn't answer.
Because deep down, he wasn't sure.
---
Later that evening, Chloe sat at the dining table while Andrian reviewed the documents they had collected.
She watched him quietly.
“You're different from what I expected.”
He looked up.
“What did you expect?”
“A rich, arrogant lawyer who thinks he's better than everyone.”
“And now?”
She smiled slightly.
“Still deciding.”
He gave a quiet laugh.
It was the first time Chloe had heard him laugh.
It changed his entire expression.
For a moment, the tension disappeared.
Then Andrian noticed Chloe staring.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You were staring.”
“I wasn't.”
“You were.”
Chloe looked away.
“Just read your documents.”
Andrian smiled.
“Fine.”
For a few minutes, the room was peaceful.
Then the lights flickered.
Chloe looked up.
“Did you see that?”
“Yes.”
Andrian immediately stood.
“Stay here.”
A security alarm suddenly sounded.
Andrian checked his phone.
“Someone is trying to access the front gate.”
Chloe's heart began beating faster.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
He moved toward the security monitor.
The camera showed an empty driveway.
Then the screen went black.
Andrian's expression changed.
“That's not possible.”
“What?”
“The system was disconnected from the inside.”
Chloe stood.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone is already inside the house.”
They both froze.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
Andrian immediately moved in front of Chloe.
“Stay behind me.”
They heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming down the stairs.
Then—
Nothing.
Andrian checked the hallway.
Nobody was there.
But a small box sat on the floor.
Chloe recognized it.
“The metal box.”
The one Elena had given them.
It was open.
The evidence inside was gone.
Andrian picked up the box.
There was another note beneath it.
He read it.
His face became pale.
“What does it say?” Chloe asked.
He handed it to her.
Chloe read the message.
THE PERSON YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
She looked at Andrian.
“Your father?”
“I don't know.”
Then another piece of paper fell from the box.
This one contained a name.
MARCUS VILLANO.
Andrian stared at it.
His father's name.
Chloe looked at him.
“Andrian...”
He slowly shook his head.
“No.”
“You said your father was involved.”
“He was.”
“Then maybe—”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“You don't know him.”
“And you do?”
Andrian stared at the name.
“I thought I did.”
Silence.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID was unknown.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a distorted voice said:
“Ask your father what happened to Daniel Zane.”
The call ended.
Andrian slowly lowered the phone.
Chloe's eyes filled with questions.
“What happened to my father?”
Andrian looked at her.
“I don't know.”
“But we're going to find out.”
He nodded.
For the first time, they weren't investigating separately.
They were on the same side.
And somewhere in the city, someone was watching them.
Someone who knew their families.
Someone who knew the truth.
And someone who had just stolen the one piece of evidence that could reveal everything.
