**Present Day**
I'm making my way through the crowded club while maintaining a close check on my surroundings, searching for a feasible target and potential risks. Just when I'm about to give up and write this night off as a total bust, I see him.
Perfect.
He's sulking on a bar stool, attempting to strike up a conversation with the girl next to him, but she's utterly uninterested. I can tell she's a werewolf even from a distance. He ought to be more aware. Particularly the females, werewolves have a strong commitment to waiting for their predetermined partners.
My work is made even more challenging by the fact that being one of the few animals with fated mates, they are famously tough to pick up at bars and clubs. The only other species with fated mates are vampires, however, they don't believe in being true to a partner before they've even met.
Since vampires often outlive werewolves, they can wait hundreds of years to mate. In addition, a lot of vampires love to consume blood during s****l encounters because it is a necessary part of their survival.
I start to move through the crowd toward my goal, trying not to shiver at the prospect.
I am aware that vampires have the power to make their bite incredibly enjoyable for their victims, but if they so want, they can also make it quite painful. And I'm never able to go past it. Even by itself, the fact that they consume blood is repulsive.
Grotesque leeches that feed on blood. And I had one there in front of me. Is there a masochist among us?
If not for the scowl on his face, the tall and slender leech would be regarded as attractive. He exudes total arrogance, even after the werewolf rejects his request. His eyes are the color of scarlet, and his long, blond hair falls in waves to his shoulders.
The first few times you meet a vampire are usually shocking because of their blood-red eyes, which reveal the evil that lies within. Naturally, everyone who is supernatural—including us witches—has a hint of evil within them. Vampires, however, are unadulterated evil. Demons are the only thing worse. However, since they don't visit Earth very frequently, I don't have to deal with them at all most nights.
To be completely honest, I have never personally experienced a demon. Since the elders require that we wait until we are sixteen, I have only been hunting for the past three years. But I have heard a lot of tales. And based on that, I'm grateful that I haven't yet encountered a demon.
They are terrible animals that are quite difficult to kill by yourself. Usually, it takes three witches or more to complete. I choose a leech to target for tonight and creep up next to it, chasing away any thoughts of demons.
Not even giving the leech a sidelong glance, I wave down the bartender. It is more effective if people believe that you were chosen for them rather than the other way around.
The leech is craning his neck to stare at the place where my neck meets my right shoulder, as I see out of the corner of my eye while I order a rum and coke. If I had a partner, that's where my mark would be. It is a way of indicating to everyone that you are available. The duo bites each other once, leaving a lasting impression.
Naturally, I would never allow anyone to claim me as their own. I turn a little bit, though, so he can see that I am mark-free because I have a part to play tonight.
As soon as the bartender places my drink in front of me, I grab my tiny handbag and take out some change.
The leech next to me swiftly pays the bartender, saying, "Don't worry Sugar, I got it."
'Sugar' is such a cutesy term, that I have to force myself not to laugh. Although I detest it, this aspect of my work is unavoidable. Hence, I put on a grin and turn to completely face him in place of the grimace.
I choose to play it up and gaze up at him through my eyelids as I put the straw in my mouth and begin to sip. "Thank you for the drink." He towers over my small 5'4" height, even though I am standing and he is seated on a barstool.
I knew he would love the attention I was giving him, and he does.
"So, what brings you here this evening?"A vampire only comes to a club like this for two things, s*x or a "snack." Despite doing this for three years now, I always feel relieved when a vampire asks me this because it means that the spell I cast on myself before coming here is effective, as everyone believes that I am a vampire. This is a common question exchanged among vampires here.
Witches and warlocks have not felt safe going out in public since the Great m******e of the Wiccan Community. The vampire king, Maldrien, ordered the eradication of the entire species. It was a planned attack, carried out on the same day, at the same time. My people had no time to defend themselves, and that was precisely what Maldrien wanted. He knew we were powerful, and that was the main reason he wanted to wipe out our species. He nearly succeeded, with only ten percent of the population surviving.
However, it was sufficient to combine our forces and establish safe havens, and secure locations where we could reside and organize our retaliation. Repopulation was the first step, and as someone who was born nearly a year after the Great m******e, I have spent my entire life pursuing retribution.
Take vengeance on the supernatural beings that abandoned us and killed us under the fake king's commands; exact retribution on the vampire species for mindlessly obeying their terrible ruler; and get revenge on Maldrien, the malevolent mastermind behind it all.
But for now, we're just going to have to wait and regroup and plot our retaliation as we play the long game, doing the best we can to eliminate as many supernaturals as we can without drawing too much attention to ourselves.
And that's why I'm here tonight at this club, which I know is frequented by supernaturals, to find someone to kill. Vampires are the simplest to kill, and I hate them the most, so it will be even more rewarding to finally remove one more vampire from the world.
