Chapter 4

I just respond because I don't have time to consider how ridiculous the scenario is. "Uh, sorry. But no, thanks," I answer, hurriedly moving my blade from my right to my left hand. They both begin to approach me as soon as my words register with them. My right hand is now free, so I snap my fingers, causing them to both stop mid-step. Taking a moment to collect myself, I saw why they appeared to be so unlike one another. The blonde is a vampire, while the one with the dark hair is a werewolf. The deep dark crimson eyes are not at all like the dark ones I thought were brown. Fantastic, two guys think I'm their pal by accident, and one of them must be a leech, of course. My bad luck. This time, I had to get the heck out of here. I turn to look back at the two men who emerged from the shadows before the werewolf and vampire left the club before I took off. I can see their features a little better now that they have come out into the light. The somewhat shorter of the two is the first to grab my interest. The small point at the top of his ears makes it extremely evident that he is fae. He is obviously quite attractive. Every fairy is. They never cease to wow me with their otherworldly beauty. He has the most vivid green eyes I have ever seen, along with light brown hair that is somewhat quiff-styled on top of his head. It looks as though he spends all day in the sun due to his immaculate golden complexion. My focus shifts to the final man. Of the four of them, he is by far the tallest. He is equally as attractive as his pals. His crew cut, worn short, is black hair. His cheekbones and jawline have a little stubble that I can barely make out. He had the deepest brown eyes I've ever seen. But I'm not sure what species he is. His muscles have a definition that makes me think he's a werewolf, yet something doesn't feel quite right. I'm thinking about what kind of animal he may be when I suddenly discover something. And for the second time tonight, it stops my heart. He is not in a frozen state. He's just staring at me, motionless. However, his breathing and blinking are visible to me. The Fae guy next to him is still transfixed as I cast a quick peek in his direction. He lifts one perfectly formed eyebrow, and I feel my eyes expand as I turn back to face the tall, dark-haired man. 1. I attempt to ask a question, but nothing comes out. "What..." How come he didn't freeze? There has never been anything like this. With hesitation, I move away from this mysterious man while maintaining my gaze. He steps forward in time with my stride back. And that one step illuminates him a little bit more, enough for me to see that my initial opinion of him was incorrect. His eyes are black, not dark brown. His eyes appear unfathomable since his iris and pupil are the same hue. And although though I have never seen one up close, I now know what species he belongs to. "Demon." I hardly had time to ponder before I blurt out the word. The devil grins menacingly and advances on me once more. I fish around in my handbag and take out a little pouch. I toss it on the ground in front of me and am immediately enveloped in a billowing cloud of dark smoke. I whisper the cloaking spell beneath my breath, "Abscondere me." With the use of this spell, I may become momentarily undetectable and conceal my aroma from being detected. I quickly turn back and avoid the still-frozen werewolf and vampire as they rush for the street. I run at my fastest for ten blocks or more, and then I start to slow down. I take care to scan my surroundings to make sure I'm not being followed in any way. I start walking back to the Base at a light jog when I detect nothing odd. I feel relieved when I see the large skyscraper in the distance—it's only a few blocks away from where I am. Now I'm practically safe. All we have done is take over an abandoned warehouse and call it the Base. However, we've made the necessary repairs so that we have everything we require to survive. And the strongest spells we have for protection are all around it. Those who are neither witches nor warlocks are not permitted to access the area. And we'll be informed if any other supernatural beings attempt it because they will be knocked back on their ass. A human trying to enter will just become lost and bewildered until they can depart on their own. I can feel the protection spell as soon as I go through the door; it sends shivers down my spine, but that's the only sign it's there. I mutter the magic that will remove my cloaking as soon as the door closes behind me, and the glamor spell that turned me into a vampire earlier. "Gratias tibi. Te dimittam." The breaking of the spells feels like a massive weight being lifted off my shoulders—a weight that I was unaware of until it was gone. It took a lot of energy to place the cloaking spell over my glamor spell, which I already had. However, I had to go at the moment and didn't really have an option. I turn to go to my room to process all that transpired tonight, but something stops me.
