Chapter 5

"Seren, you're back. Good, come sit with me. I made hot cocoa." My favorite part of the evening is usually when Elarra and I settle down and sip cocoa, but now all I want is to be by myself. to take in all that has transpired within the previous two hours. However, I am aware that I must accept her. She has been my lifelong mentor and is one of the elders. She has taught me all there is to know about becoming a witch. Taking the seat across from her, I move to the table she is seated at. Despite being in her seventies, Elarra doesn't appear it. Her abilities remain unaltered. The older generation is against the children developing bonds with anyone since you never know when they could be apprehended and killed outside of the Base. Therefore, even though Elarra is my mentor, she maintains a professional distance between us. But every time I see her, I can't help but become a little depressed. Imagining the possible bond between us. To me, she resembles a mother. I can't tell her that, though, ever. The regulations that the elders have established are not always clear to me. Nonetheless, I have to have faith that they are aware of what is best for us all. Our shared objective is to get retribution for the supernatural beings that deceived us. With a courteous "thank you," I accept Elarra's hot cocoa mug and take a little drink. Elarra asks, "So, how did you fair tonight?" with her usual directness. I tell her, omitting the most exciting portion of my night, that I "took out a leech". I am aware that she will have to tell the other elders what occurred if I tell her. Although I'm not sure what they would do, I do know that they will be quite curious. Probably questions for which I have no answers. I haven't even had time to think about what went down. I make the decision to hold off on telling them. All I need is a little time to gather my thoughts before approaching them. Besides, it probably won't matter. I do not doubt that I won't see those men ever again. She says, "Good," acknowledging what I said without challenging it. Not even to check if I was alright and didn't get hurt during the procedure. Elarra goes on swiftly, saying, "The elders had a meeting while you were gone." "We've made a decision. Seren, it's time for you to do your part." I don't understand her at first, but after a moment I understand what she's talking about. "What?" I manage to say as the panic tries to get stuck in my throat. This cannot be occurring tonight in all seriousness. A girl's tolerances are limited. "Seren, you have put this off for long enough already. This should have happened as soon as you turned eighteen. We gave you some time because we knew you needed it, but it has been long enough now. You should have come to terms with the situation by now." Elarra speaks to me with a firm voice. The expression on her face tells me that this time there will be no turning back. I've gone too far in testing the elder's patience. Elarra continues, seeing the expression of failure on my face. "Kaden will come to your room in about fifteen minutes." She then gives me a dismissing sign, but I stay still. Even my voice sounds frantic when I say, "Fifteen minutes! This is happening right now? Why can't we wait a couple of days?" But I don't care because I am desperate. It was horrible enough to be told that I would have to give up my virginity to a pre-selected warlock after the night I had. They want us to get down to business, and I can't take it.
