The silence in the elevator felt heavier than before.
Not quiet.
Not calm.
Tense.
Like something had shifted between us… and neither of us was willing to say it out loud.
I stood slightly apart from him this time.
Not close enough to feel his presence.
Not far enough to ignore it.
“Don’t test me.”
His words from earlier echoed in my mind.
A warning.
Or a threat.
I wasn’t sure which one bothered me more.
“You didn’t have to say it like that.”
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
His gaze shifted to me slowly.
“How should I have said it?”
“Like I’m not… something you control.”
A pause.
Then
“You’re not.”
The answer came too quickly.
Too easily.
I let out a small breath. “It doesn’t feel that way.”
“That’s because you’re reacting emotionally.”
The words landed flat.
Dismissive.
Like my feelings were something to be corrected.
Not understood.
“Of course I am,” I said, my voice tightening slightly. “I’m in a situation I didn’t choose.”
“You said yes.”
The reminder hit harder than it should have.
“I didn’t have a real choice.”
His eyes darkened slightly.
“You always have a choice.”
There it was again.
That certainty.
That belief that everything was simple.
Clear.
Controlled.
“It didn’t feel like one,” I said quietly.
Silence stretched between us.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Then
“That’s your perception.”
The words were calm.
Too calm.
Like the conversation didn’t matter.
Like I didn’t matter.
Something in me snapped slightly.
“My perception?” I repeated.
“Yes.”
I let out a disbelieving breath.
“So everything I feel right now is just… wrong?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You implied it.”
A pause.
Then
“You’re letting it control your decisions.”
“And you’re not?” I shot back.
The words came faster now.
Sharper.
Less controlled.
“You’re controlling everything.”
The elevator doors opened.
But neither of us moved.
“Because it needs to be controlled,” he replied.
My chest tightened.
“No,” I said. “Because you need it to be.”
The words landed.
Hard.
And for the first time
He didn’t respond immediately.
Something flickered in his expression.
Gone too quickly to read.
But it was there.
I saw it.
And that
That changed something.
“You think you understand me,” he said finally.
His voice was quieter now.
Lower.
More controlled than before.
“I think you don’t let anyone understand you,” I replied.
Another pause.
Longer this time.
More dangerous.
Then
“That’s not your concern.”
The distance in his voice
It hit differently.
Colder.
Sharper.
Like a door had just closed.
Maybe I had pushed too far.
Maybe
I should have stopped.
But I didn’t.
“You said this was an arrangement,” I continued. “But you don’t treat it like one.”
His gaze held mine.
Unmoving.
“How do I treat it?”
“Like I belong to you.”
The words hung between us.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
A beat passed.
Then another.
And for a moment
I thought he would deny it.
Correct me.
Shut it down.
But instead
“You do.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
The word barely came out.
“You said yes,” he repeated. “That comes with expectations.”
“That doesn’t mean I belong to you.”
His eyes didn’t move.
“It means you’re part of my world.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No,” he said quietly.
“It’s not.”
But the way he said it
It didn’t feel like disagreement.
It felt like something else.
Something deeper.
Something I didn’t understand yet.
“I’m not going to lose myself in this,” I said.
The words came out softer now.
But stronger.
More certain.
“Then don’t.”
The answer caught me off guard.
I frowned slightly. “That’s it?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then
“I didn’t choose you because you’re weak.”
The words hit differently.
Not cold.
Not controlling.
Something else.
Something… unexpected.
“I chose you because you’re not.”
My chest tightened slightly.
Because for the first time
It didn’t feel like control.
It felt like… recognition.
And that,
That was more dangerous than anything else.
The elevator doors closed behind him as he stepped out first.
I stood there for a second longer.
Processing.
Breathing.
Trying to understand what had just happened.
Because something had shifted.
Not everything.
Not yet.
But something.
And I wasn’t sure if that made this easier…
Or more complicated.
