Chapter 37 Mick offered Dan a second scoop of curried lamb, but he waved the pot away. ‘You have to eat,’ said Mick, piling up the plate anyway. ‘Christ almighty. Anyone would think it was you with the cancer.’ He took a second pot from the stove and ladled out sticky rice without asking permission. The two men ate in silence, growling at the dogs in turn each time they poked their noses through the kitchen door. ‘You have to speak to the lass,’ said Mick at last. ‘I’ve tried ringing,’ said Dan miserably. ‘She won’t answer.’ They both picked at their meals again. ‘You could, Mick,’ he said hopefully. ‘You could talk to her.’ ‘Don’t put me in the middle.
