She screamed and Clola saw her face contort, her eyes wide with terror and her mouth open, before she disappeared from view. Clola gave a sob, which was the only sound she could make, as Torquil dragged her back through the door into the turret. With his arms round her – for otherwise she would have fallen to the ground – he stood looking at the small bed and the partially furnished room. “You can’t stay here,” he muttered.
