Zara’s POV
I collapsed on the the cold floor as Selene closed the door with a bang.
My wolf let out a low growl, she must have felt the pain as much as I did.
How could Selene, the one friend I trusted so much, say all of that to my face? Exactly how long had their affair been going on for?
“Gods!” I swore under my breath.
My face was swollen from crying, even my eyes were exhausted as the tears had stopped flowing.
Hours later, I finally put myself together and left the room.
“Hi Zara,” I looked up as I recognized Liam’s voice. He was standing at the end of the stairs and waving at me.
“I’ve been looking for you all over the place, where have you been?” He asked, looking concerned.
“Your eyes… have you been crying?” He asked again.
“I’m fine, I just…” I stuttered.
“No, you’re not,” he cut me off and led the way to my room.
He opened the door and I went in after him, taking my seat on the bed while he sat by the window.
He looked at me long and hard, like he wanted to bring out the words from my mouth with his eyes.
“I spoke with Selene,” I finally said, breaking the silence.
“And…” he queried.
“She wasn’t remorseful, she says I should be grateful that she took him off my hands,” I said tiredly.
The words sounded strange coming out of my mouth, I was angry, I was hurt, but I knew that nothing I could say or do would undo the damage already done.
Liam stood up from where he sat and came to me. In a swift motion, he pulled me up and wrapped his hands around me in a hug.
“It’s time to let Storme go,” he whispered into my hair, almost inaudibly.
Liam’s arms felt safe and secure and I stood there, drinking in his comforting scent, drawing all the comfort I could from his warmth.
After what seemed like a eternity, I pulled away from him and cleared my throat.
“The attack against the vicious howl pack is in two days. I want you to stay safe because we never know what the bastards are up to, you cannot leave the estate on any account, if there’s anything you need, let me know so I can get them for you beforehand,” he said in his usual tone of concern.
Liam had been nothing but good to me from the first day he came into the pack. My father had brought him home one day looking lost and tattered, and taken him in to live among his family.
Sometimes I wondered if he was secretly in love with me with the way he was always looking out and rooting for me.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, I stood up and took his hand. He looked shocked, but tried to mask it with a smile.
“Thank you, Liam, I don’t know what I’d do without you” I blurted out.
He only smiled and patted my shoulder.
“I’ll see you once everything is over,” he said and left the room.
A cold breeze blew in through the window and shifted the curtains, revealing the half moon in the night sky.
I went towards the window and stared long at the moon, wishing for a moment that I could take its place, just there shining my light on everything without a care in the world.
The door opened behind me and someone came in. I turned to see who it was, it was Maya.
“How are you?” She asked, coming close to wrap her arms around me.
“I’m okay…” I said, but the look on my face must have betrayed me because she didn’t look convinced.
“I saw Selene. Did she come here?” She asked, folding her arms.
“Yes, uhm, no. She came, but not here. I met her downstairs and tried to hear her reasons, but…but…” my emotions came crashing down again and I sobbed loudly. I couldn’t bring myself to repeat the words that Selene had said to me without losing my mind.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to say it now,” she said, patting my back gently till the sobs lessened and I could talk again.
“I’m going to sleep here today, don’t even try to say no because I won’t be leaving you to sleep alone, at least for now. I can’t have you crying yourself to sleep because of that witch,” she added.
We kept talking as we got ready for bed. I knew she was trying to get my mind off Selene and Storme, and I was doubly grateful for her effort, I also wanted to get over it as soon as possible.
“Liam says we have to remain indoors till the attack is over,” she said as she came out of the bathroom.
“Yes…” my voice trailed off.
“Maya,” I said with a serious look.
“Yes?” She replied.
“I need to confess something to you,” I told her.
“What’s that?” She asked.
“Uhm,” I shifted in my seat.
“You remember that night at the ceremony, when Storme led me up that podium and I nearly lost my balance?” I asked her.
My palms were all sweaty now, and I shifted at the edge of my bed uncomfortably. I didn’t know where the courage came from, but I knew I wanted to tell Maya the truth. She deserved to know. The planned attack against the vicious howl pack made me sick to my stomach, knowing that my mate was the leader of that pack. What if matters escalated and it became a real war?
“What happened then?” She inquired.
“That scene, it was because I scented my mate,” I replied.
“I guessed that immediately, silly, was that what you wanted to confess?” She asked with a chuckle.
“That’s not all,” I replied.
“I actually found him, my mate, I found him that night,” I added
“Why? That’s a good thing! Why did you keep that away from me all this time? Who’s he?” She asked and tapped my forehead, smiling.
“You don’t understand, Maya, it’s more complicated than you think,” I stood up from the bed and moved away from her, unsure of the effect of what I wanted to say next would have on her.
“It’s the intruder that they are looking for, it’s a member of the vicious howl pack, a member of our enemy pack is my mate!”
“What?!” She screamed.
A loud bang sounded outside the door and I heard the footsteps of someone hurrying away.
“Who’s that?” We both asked simultaneously and rushed to the door to check who it was.
