Lucien’s POV
“Meredith, please! Can we not do this now? I have pack matters to attend to. There’s too much going on right now for me to sit around and play love with you, don’t you understand?” I half screamed at Meredith as she nagged at me non stop about giving her more attention.
“Oh, pack matters, okay then! You have been in this office for days without as much as coming home to me. You’d rather neglect me for days, focusing on other things than talk to me? I get it, Lucien, excuse me!” She stood up from the armchair where she had been sitting and left the room angrily.
I sometimes wondered how she could be so sweet one minute and become as angry as a wounded tiger the next. The pack had just recovered from the attack by the Bloodmoon, and I was working towards security measures to make sure it never happened again. I was even planning to execute a counter attack against them, just so they knew not to play with me. How the heck did Meredith expect me to coddle her all day?
“Women are really something,” I muttered under my breath. The world could be falling apart and she would only be worried because you didn’t give her attention.
“Greetings, Alpha,” a thick voice came through the doorway and I looked up to see Elder Sunsprings, the very man who had taken me in when I decided to come back to my fatherland to take my place.
I had been too occupied with my thoughts to notice that Meredith had left the door open when she went out.
I stood from my chair immediately and went towards him, offering him my hand for a shake.
“Elder Sunsprings,” I greeted him and offered him a seat.
Elder Sunsprings seldom came to the estate, and whenever he did, it was sure to be something important that brought him. Judging by his expression, I could tell that he was here on serious business.
“What can I offer you?” I asked him coolly, knowing he would refuse anything I offered.
“I am okay, Alpha,” he said after clearing his throat.
“About the outcome of the last meeting, I was told that the pack was planning to carry out a revenge mission on the enemy pack,” he cleared his throat and continued.
“It’s too soon, they will be prepared for anything, and we might have more casualties. It would not be a wise decision to make the attack now, we should plan towards taking them unawares, just like they did us,” he added and cleared his throat again.
His words held so much wisdom. I had thought about it myself, but the pressure from the pack, wounded warriors, and families of the fallen soldiers made me rethink and agree to carry out the attack immediately.
“You have spoken well, elder. I will follow your advice to the letter, it is better to move with logic rather than emotions,” I replied.
“I will take my leave now, I am glad to know that you are still the same wise and humble leader I brought you up to be,” he said and rose up to leave.
“Thank you, Elder Sunsprings. I will have my driver take you back to your residence,” I said and held the door open for him.
“Ah ah,” he chuckled lightly as a sturdy young man approached us, bowed to me and escorted him out.
“The old man surely always has himself sorted out, doesn’t he?” I asked as he entered his car and the driver drove off.
“Oh yes he does,” Adrian responded from behind me.
“You, when did you get here?” I asked him with fake suspicion.
We went back into the office together.
“The attack will not be happening. At least not so soon, pass the information on to the pack,” I told him as I took my seat.
I expected him to ask questions about the sudden change of plans, but he only nodded in agreement and went out of the office to carry out my instruction.
Now I could put my mind at ease and focus on other things. The wounded soldiers had been taken care of, and peace had returned to the pack. I had reinforced security and put preventive measures in place against another surprise attack, so everything was quite settled.
My mind went back to Meredith, she was quite offended earlier.
“I should probably get her flowers to make up for my absence and whatnot, to show her that I appreciate her concern at least,” I told myself and picked up my car keys.
The drive to the mall was a short one, so I decided to take the longer route just to clear my head.
My wounded shoulder was healing, but I still felt a full pain now and then, especially now as I was driving.
“I need a flower with an apology note,” I told the staff at the counter as soon as I walked in.
“We have that, sir,” she said with a shaky voice and scrambled to her feet. I had that effect on people, male or female, and somehow, I hated to admit that I derived a little satisfaction from it.
It reminded me that I was no longer the weak, wandering, and always hungry lad, but a powerful Alpha whom people stood in awe of.
“Uhm… If you go down that line and turn right, you’ll see the flower section. You can pick whichever one you like,” she added, gesturing towards the inner part of the mall.
The place was filled with so many different flowers that I was at a loss for what to choose. I had never bought flowers for anyone before, not even Meredith. She would have to accept anyone I chose for her, at least out of appreciation for my thoughtfulness and intention.
After what seemed like an eternity, I finally settled for red roses, which I thought suited her perfectly because of her fiery nature.
I had just turned to go back to pay for what I bought when I sensed an all too familiar scent.
Before I could say jack, the owner of the scent came into view, chatting away with a girl beside her, they were smiling, laughing even, a sight which turned my stomach and made my insides churn.
It was her, the enemy’s daughter.
“Bloodmoon!” I cursed under my breath.
Without thinking, I threw the flower away and walked gingerly to where she stood, grabbing her by the neck and pushing her against the wall.
Her companion wanted to stop me but I pushed her off with the anger that was boiling in me.
“You!” I said through gritted teeth.
“Did you put your father and pack up to that little stunt they pulled on me?” I asked as she struggled in my grip.
“I clearly warned you not to breathe a word of what transpired that night to anybody, didn’t I? Well, since you went ahead to do what you pleased, you have given me no choice. I will send you back to your father in pieces, one body part after the other. It would be a fair price to pay for what he did to my parents years ago, don’t you think?”
Suddenly, an overwhelming feeling of pain washed over me and a little voice sounded in my head. It was faint, scared, and asking for help.
“I’m in pain…”
“Where did that come from?” I looked around in shock.
