Selene’s POV
“f**k!” I screamed into the night as I checked my phone for the umpteenth time. No reply. I had sent the message about an hour ago, and it had ticked read almost immediately.
My wolf whined.
“Not now, Diane, are you’re going to scold me too?” I said out loud, already getting irritated.
“That b***h is really something. Isn’t she? Making you all worked up like this,” she whispered inside my head and I hissed.
“She really thinks she can have it all, but she’s about to see that the world doesn’t revolve around her,” I replied to her and rubbed my belly.
She purred contentedly and went quiet.
A little voice in my head told me that what I did was wrong, and I should take responsibility for my actions, but I brushed it off with a wave of my hand. It was her fault for snooping around and finding out about my affair with Storme. I had tried my best to hide the truth from her for years, I still remained her friend and offered her all the care I could. I even watched her frolic around with Storme and bore it all quietly. How could I be at fault?
Yes, I wanted Storme, and I made him fall in love with me. There was nothing I could do about that. Was it my fault that she couldn’t give him what he wanted?
“This is driving me nuts!” I screamed again, kicking at the grass underfoot as I walked back to my apartment. My room at the Bloodmoon pack house had been abandoned since the night of the mating ceremony, I couldn’t bear to sleep in the same house as Zara because I thought she would finally mate with my man, and was only too relieved to find out that they didn’t mate, which made me push Storme the more.
“What a weakling! No single mind of his own, I always have to decide most things for him, ugh,” I scoffed as I opened the door and went in.
I went to bed immediately, my body was weak from all the stress of the past few days, and I was only grateful to be able to have a good night’s sleep away from all the chaos happening at the bloodmoon estate.
I would decide how to talk to Zara tomorrow, and what to tell her. It was unlikely that she’d want to talk to me anyway, but I would give it a try.
I fell asleep dreaming about engaging Zara in a fight where we were pulling each others’ hair and Storme was sitting in the background, clapping and smiling at whoever happened to be winning at the moment.
**************
I woke up the next morning to the sound of the alarm tone ringing continuously on my phone.
I stretched and rolled to the edge of the bed, angrily grabbing my phone from the bedside table to switch the alarm off.
“Why, It’s 7am already,” I said as I yawned.
My phone beeped. A text from Storme.
“Good morning, babe. I’ll be busy today, I’m in charge of mobilizing men to the vicious howl estate for the raid coming up in three days. I’ll be unable to see you till everything is settled. Take care of yourself my love.”
I brushed a strand of hair away from my face. A raid? Why hadn’t he told me anything about it yesterday? What was it about? And why were we raiding the vicious howl estate?
“Well, I guess I’ll have to go back to the pack house to find out,” I said to myself and rose from the bed to dress up and make myself a quick breakfast.
I decided to walk, since it was only a short distance away and arrived there in no time and entered through the big gates.
Storme was right, judging by the various vehicles containing arms that were parked under a large canopy.
Walking from the gate to the main building was quite a distance, and I was exhausted when I got there. So I went into the garden to catch my breath, then I heard a low humming.
It was Melissa, she was watering the flowers with water from a plastic container. She had a worried look in her eyes and didn’t notice me coming in.
“Good morning,” I said to her with a smile.
“Hi,” she replied. Not bothering to look up from what she was doing.
I had always known Melissa to be a snob, but I was determined to talk to her this morning. I knew she hated Zara, and wondered if I could use some of that hatred to my advantage.
“I was wondering if you’d seen Zara today, and by the way, I love the highlights you just added to your hair. It’s cool,” I said lightly, trying to break the ice.
“Oh,” was her only reply.
It was no use. I gave up on trying to talk to her and turned to leave.
“I would assume you’d be ashamed of yourself and never show your face here again, I never knew you were this shameless,” I stopped short in my tracks at the sound of her deep accusing voice.
“What do you mean?” I swirled around in shock and nearly lost my balance.
“What do you expect when you go about sleeping with your friend’s lover? And you even have the effrontery to come looking for her. Why are you shocked? Oh, you thought no one knew about your little secret?” She asked in a jeering manner.
“Uhm, I think you’ve made a mistake, Melissa,” I stammered.
She dropped the container in her hand and turned to face me, squaring her shoulders and fixing her soulless eyes on me.
“Okay then, go ahead. Go find her, not like I care about the bastard anyway. I’ll be here,” she said and picked up the container to resume her work.
I left the garden and went into the house. Shaken by what Melissa had told me.
How long had she known about my affair with Storme? Was she the one who told Zara?
“No, no, she couldn’t, she hates her too much for that,” I tried to convince myself.
I had just entered the hallway leading to Zara’s room when I turned around and resolved to go back home. The confidence I woke up with that made me want to have a talk with Zara had disappeared, and was replaced with a new fear.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed mine and pulled me roughly to the end of the well lighted hallway into a dimly lit room. It all happened so fast that I was too stunned to speak or scream.
It took a minute before my eyes adjusted to the darkness.
Before me stood Zara, looking like she was ready to kill me.
I took two paces back in fear.
“Why did you do that, Selene, why did you do that to me?” She asked in a voice that carried anger and hurt, coming closer to me.
With each step she took forward, I shifted back till my back brushed against the wall.
The words stuck to my throat, I couldn’t bear to look into her eyes. The blue eyes looked even bluer with the tears in them ready to fall at any moment.
“I…I…I’m s..sorry, Zee,” I mumbled incoherently.
“I trusted you, Selene, and you betrayed me! You were having an affair with Storme all this while, how did you feel sleeping with him and coming back to me like everything was fine, uh? You both must have been laughing at me behind my back. Was it fun? Did you enjoy deceiving me? I was your fool, right?” The tears were falling rapidly from her eyes now, but her voice remained steady.
Guilt consumed me, but my mouth would not open to say anything. I stared ahead of me with a dead look. The fear in me had subsided and was replaced with another feeling.
“Well, go ahead!” She screamed.
“You wanted to talk, here I am, go ahead and talk! Selene, talk!” She grabbed my shoulders and shook me violently.
I finally found my voice and shook her off me.
“You can’t really blame me, can you? I helped you out where you were lacking, Zara. You couldn’t give Storme what he wanted, and I did on your behalf! Why are you whining?” I yelled at her.
“What?” She stepped back in pure horror.
I grew bolder.
“Yes, did you even love him? You were with him because you were following your father’s orders, weren’t you? Why are you acting like you truly loved him? And besides, you two were never meant to be together. I don’t know why you’re making a fuss,” I said, stomping my feet on the floor in defiance.
She stared at me with her mouth agape, too stunned to speak. I seized the opportunity to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the room and ran out of the house into the garden.
True to her words, Melissa was sitting on the bench, legs crossed like she was waiting for someone.
“You had your talk, didn't you? I assume that you would want to get rid of her,” she said, her mouth barely moving.
“What?” I couldn’t believe my ears. I knew Melissa hated Zara, but I didn’t imagine that she would think of getting rid of her own sister.
“I have a plan, you know where to find me if you’re interested,” she said and stood up to leave without waiting for a response.
“Wait!” I called after her.
