Disappointment

Zara’s POV I panicked as his grip on my neck tightened and his nails dug into my flesh. The icy cold look in his eyes seemed to be burning life out of me, I couldn’t breathe, my throat was burning, and my head was pounding. His mouth was moving, but I didn’t hear a word of anything he was saying. Then I closed my eyes and whispered inwardly, wishing a miracle would just happen and gree me from the death grip that this beastly human was holding me in. Suddenly, his grip on me loosened and the fire in his eyes dulled. “What was that?” He asked coldly. “What was what?” I wondered, confused. With the last bit of strength in me, I wiggled out of his grip and fell to the floor. “What did you do to me? I heard your voice in my head!” He bellowed as he towered over me with his broad frame. Seizing the opportunity of the distraction, Maya ran to where I sat on the cold floor with my neck in my hands and pulled me up. We ran out into the parking space to where my car was parked, and in seconds, we were on the road. “Please calm down, you’re driving too fast, you’re going to get us killed!” I half screamed at Maya, grabbing the handle as she swerved off the road and almost ran the car into a ditch. “Well, someone almost got us killed back there and it wasn’t me!” She shouted back and the car came to a sudden halt in front of the estate gates, almost throwing me out of my seat. “Maya!” My voice had become hoarse. “I’m sorry, Zee. I really thought that beast of a man was going to kill you, that’s why I lost it,” she said with tears in her voice. “I think I’ll go get some air,” I said and got down from the car. “I’m coming with you,” she whispered back and we walked in through the gates towards the garden. The servants would get the car in by nightfall, I was too occupied with my own thoughts to be bothered about bringing it in. “He thinks I did it, he thinks I’m behind the attack,” I said as we sat on the wooden bench under a red oak tree. “He threatened to kill me if I ever breathed a word of what happened to anyone, I didn’t even tell anyone, I mean except you, not even the Alpha!” I sobbed loudly. “This is f****d up,” she said with her face in her palms. “How could fate be so wicked to mate me with that beast?” I asked no one in particular. I sighted one of the maids coming in our direction and quickly wiped my face. I couldn’t let them see me like this. “Good day miss Zara, Master Storme has been looking all over for you, I couldn’t find you in your room and thought you’d be here,” she said and turned to leave without waiting for a response. “What does that bastard want from you again? To hurt you more than he already has or what?” Maya asked with disgust in her tone. Almost immediately, I saw Storme walking towards us in his usual measured gait. “Speak of the devil,” she muttered and turned to leave. “I’ll stay in the vicinity just in case he tries to be funny, I can’t trust that bastard anywhere near you anymore,” she said and left the garden through the opposite direction. “Zara,” Storme said as he walked in and sat on the bench opposite mine. “We haven’t really talked much since that day,” he continued. “Well, what do we have to talk about?” I replied curtly and looked away. “I’m sorry, I know I did you wrong, even I haven’t found the words to explain myself to you. I never meant to deceive you from the start, I just don’t know how and when things went wrong. I’m sorry, Zara. I hope that one day, you can look back at what we once shared and find it in your heart to forgive me, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings,” he said with a tone of remorse which I suspected to be fake. He sounded genuine, but after everything my eyes had seen in the last weeks, it was hard to trust anyone, especially him. “You should leave before your girlfriend sees you here with me,” I said to him coldly. With a look of resignation in his eyes, he rose up and left the garden, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The right and sensible thing to do would have been to get my revenge on them both, but I hadn’t the courage to follow through, and besides, there were more serious issues now. I decided there and then to let them both be, I couldn’t forgive him, not yet, the pain from the betrayal still kept me up at night, I couldn’t just let it go like that, but I would stop thinking about him. I had my own life to live, not just as Alpha Hunter’s daughter and Storme’s Luna, but as myself, Zara Emberfall. This was my life, and it was time to stop letting every other person and circumstance run it for me. I left the garden with a quiet resolution, it was high time I told my father everything. I found him reclining in a swinging chair in his study. “Beautiful daughter of mine,” he said with a smile and dropped the paper in his hands on the coffee table. “You all abandoned your old father by himself, now I have no one but these papers to keep me company,” he said, pointing at the newspapers scattered across the table. “I’m sorry, father, I came here because I have something to tell you,” I blurted out. I knew that if I stalled, I would lose my courage and end up talking about something else. So I decided to take the bull by the horns and put off any other conversation he might want to have with me until I had told him my little secret. “What is so urgent that you have to tell me immediately?” He asked, removing his glasses. He coughed, and I could hear a rattling in his throat and chest. Gods! He was getting older and sicker by the day. I looked at his face, his eyes had sunken and his hair had become grayer with age. His once broad and giant frame was reduced to a frail one and he looked weak. It broke my heart to see my father like this. “Dad,” I held his hands and knelt in front of him. “I found my mate that night, during the mating ceremony. It was the intruder, the one from the vicious howl pack. Father, my mate is the Alpha of our enemy pack,” I sobbed into his hands. His hold on my hand slacked, I wiped my tears and looked up at him. And for the first time in my life, I saw something that I had never seen before in my father’s eyes, he looked at me with disappointment in his eyes. My heart dropped and I cried the more, that look alone broke my heart into a thousand pieces. I had disappointed my father.
