Zara

“Selene?” I said with a shaky, almost inaudible voice.

She just stood there, staring at me like she had seen a ghost. She was half-dressed, her hair in a mess, and with a guilty look in her eyes.

“What’s wrong, babe?” I heard Storme’s voice behind her as he came into view.

My breath caught in my throat as I made eye contact with him. He was half naked too, only in a flimsy underwear, I understood immediately. So this was why they were both ghosting me.

“Z…Zara,” he muttered.

My feet gave way under me and I would have collapsed if not for Maya’s hand supporting me.

We all stood there, staring at each other for what seemed like an eternity.

“Let’s go,” Maya said as she led me back to the car.

I rested my head on the dashboard, different scenarios playing in my mind. I had started to suspect Selene when she disappeared at the ceremony and wouldn’t even pick my calls, and when she suddenly ran out of my room yesterday.

But, Storme? I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was the most loyal person I thought existed, how could he turn around and date my friend?

“Zara?” Maya called out to me with a light pat on my back.

I didn’t respond, I just couldn’t. The weight of what just happened bore down on me so much I could barely put my thoughts to words.

THE DAY BEFORE************************

Selene’s behavior was strange enough. All I did was talk about Storme, my boyfriend, so why was she acting like that?

I decided to follow her to know why she left suddenly like that, instead I met with Maya at the door.

“You won’t believe what is happening, Zara!” She was agitated.

“Put on your clothes fast, we have to follow that witch immediately!” She added.

I was more confused than ever.

I put on a sweater and quickly followed her lead. Selene was just getting into a taxi when we saw her. It was getting dark outside, so she didn’t see us.

We got into the next taxi and followed them.

“Maya, what’s happening? Why are we following Selene?” I asked her now, beads of perspiration were starting to form on my face.

She looked into my eyes and held my hands.

“Zara, Selene is seeing Storme. They have been sleeping together, and they have been at it for a long time. I don’t…

“What…t…t!?” I cut her off and snatched my hands from hers.

“That is untrue! And even if it is, why are you telling me now?!” My voice had risen to a scream.

The taxi driver looked at us through the rear view mirror.

“Easy there, misses, are you okay?”

I ignored him.

Maya took my hand again.

“I came to you as soon as I confirmed it. I’ve been investigating since the mating ceremony when Selene disappeared. I guess she didn’t want to see you mated with Storme, that’s why she ran away, but came back when she got the news that you both didn’t mate,” she said with a blank look in her eyes.

“But where are we following her to now?” I asked Maya with tears in my eyes.

“Storme’s house,” was her only reply.

Storme had a house? Since when? I had thought he only lived in the bloodmoon pack house, how come he had another house that no one was aware of?

“But how did you know it’s his house, Maya?” I asked again.

“Well, my snooping around uncovered a lot of things, Storme has a house, and that’s where Selene has been hiding,” she added.

“Driver, wait” she said suddenly and I jerked.

Selene’s taxi had taken a detour onto a lonely road, and following it would give us away. So the driver parked his car and we got down, paid, and quickly followed on foot.

The taxi stopped in front of an old house at the end of the street. Selene came down, looked around and went in through the half opened gate while the car drove off, blowing dust in our faces as he passed by where we stood.

“That’s the place, that’s Storme’s house,” she told me, wrapping her scarf tightly around her arms.

“I’ll call Liam to come get us with your car, I’ll share him our location so he know how to find us. It doesn’t look like we’ll get a cab out of here,” she added.

I just stood there, staring blankly at the black gate, I was still unable to process everything I had heard and seen.

“But why Liam?” I asked Maya.

“He was the one who did most of the digging, he told me he always suspected something shady was going on between those two, but couldn’t say anything because he lacked evidence,” Maya replied me.

Twenty five minutes later, Liam arrived in my car and drove us back to the bloodmoon estate.

“Zara,” he called out to me as we walked into the house.

“I’m so sorry about this, you should get some rest and we can talk tomorrow,” he added as he opened the door to my room for me and Maya to enter.

“Goodnight,” I replied, finally finding my voice.

I lay awake throughout the night. My mind was unsettled, how could Storme do this to me?

All I had wanted to do just a few hours ago was see him so we could plan how to carry out a bonding ritual, so we could finally be mates and carry out my father’s wish. But now he was dating Selene? How was I supposed to deal with all of this?

My thoughts went to my father. Telling him now would only make his health deteriorate faster, I would keep the news from him, at least for now. And there was the succession plan, if I broke up the relationship with Storme, would my father still want him to be the next Alpha of the bloodmoon pack?

It was nearing sunrise before I finally fell asleep, only to be woken up two hours later by a pounding headache. I went into the bathroom to brush and wash myself.

As the water ran down my body, I began to wish it would also wash away the knowledge that Storme was cheating on me with my best friend.

I finished up in a hurry and rushed back into the room to dress up, memories from last night kept flooding my mind and I grabbed my car keys from the nightstand.

I sprinted out of the house and went to where my car was parked. I needed to see for myself, I wouldn’t believe all of this until I saw Storme and he told me himself what was happening.

“Zee!” Maya called from behind me.

“Where are you going in such a hurry?” She added.

“To Storme’s,” I replied as I opened the car door.

“Are you crazy? You want to drive looking like that?” She bellowed while walking towards me.

“Looking like what?” I asked, puzzled.

“You barely slept last night, Zee! Your eyes are red and puffy, I can’t let you drive looking like that,” she added amd collected the car key from me.

I suddenly felt dizzy and staggering lightly.

“See?” She rolled her eyes and led me to the passenger seat.

“I’ll drive, okay?”

We arrived there late in the morning, the gate was slicked but the fence was broken down, so we went around the house and got into the compound. The house looked very old and uninhabited and I almost started to doubt Maya and Liam’s words. Maybe Storme wasn’t here after all, and maybe Selene had just come yesterday on urgent business and left already.

I knocked twice.

No response.

I stepped back from the door and made to leave, when the door clicked open suddenly and a head popped out.

The blonde hair was unmistakable.

“Selene?” My voice came out in a rasp whisper.

“Take Me Home,” I told Maya in a voice that sounded strange even to me.

She obeyed without saying a word, and we were at the bloodmoon estate presently.

“Hum… Zara? What’s happening here?” Maya’s voice jolted me out of my head.

I looked up to see what she was talking about. My eyes were swollen from crying and I could barely see, there was a commotion in the compound as we drove in.

Maya parked the car and we got down.

“Dad?!” We both echoed.

My father was in his wheelchair with his assistant beside him, together with the pack elders. I missed my step and almost fell as I ran towards him.

“What happened?”
