The intruder

1385 Words
Zara I waited by the door of the meeting room, pacing up and down at intervals. My father was holding a meeting with the elders of the pack, it looked like it was serious, judging from the earlier commotion outside. I just hoped it was not something bad. I heard soft footsteps behind me and turned to look. It was Maya, lines of worry creased over her forehead. She looked tired, and I knew it was because of me. “Liam is waiting in the garden, it seems he knows something,” she said and grabbed my hand. I followed behind her quietly, unable to argue about anything. Whatever it was, Liam would know. He always seemed to know everything. Melissa walked by with a scowl on her face. “Hi,” I greeted her. She ignored and went into the house, banging the entrance door shut. “Huh,” Maya said with a shrug and pulled me along. “You’re here,” Liam said with a forced smile as I walked into the garden with Maya. “The intruder at your party, they know who it is,” he said, staring at me with a straight face. My heart skipped a beat. “Wh…what?” “Yes, it’s a member of our rival pack, The Vicious howls,” he added. My heart raced, was my secret out already? If the pack already knew that the intruder was a vicious howl, then did they know that it was their alpha, and even more importantly, that he was my mate? Or that I had followed him into the woods that night? I broke out in a cold sweat, my palms began to itch, and my head ached, thumping like it was being split in two. Mindless, I stood up to leave with no destination in mind, I would go somewhere, anywhere, as long as I didn’t have to deal this, I wanted to escape all of this. I took a step forward and my legs failed. The last thing I remembered was my head hitting a thorny rose bush and Maya screaming my name at the top of her voice. “Zara?” A voice called faintly from the distance. I opened my eyes slowly, trying to register the environment that looked strangely familiar. It was getting dark, but I could see the outlines of the room and ceiling. I was on my bed. “Zara?” The voice called out again, nearer now than before. I traced the voice to the figure sitting beside me on the bed. It was Maya, she was hovering over me, touching my head and checking my temperature. “You’re awake!” She cried and hugged me. “What happened?” I asked her, still unsure of what was happening. “You fainted in the garden, and we had to carry you upstairs, Liam and me. He stepped out just now to call the doctor since you wouldn’t wake up, I was so scared! But I’m good now that you’re awake,” she rattled on in her tiny voice. My memories rushed back now. The shock and stress of what happened must have overwhelmed my body system. “Are you crying?” I asked as she brushed off a teardrop from eyes. “I’m not, it’s just…” she sobbed. Seeing her cry triggered the all the emotions I had been holding in since yesterday. My body shook as the tears fell from my eyes in torrents. “Oh my! What have I done?” I heard Maya through my sniffs and tears. “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t be crying,” she said in between sobs, crying even more as she patted my back in consolation. The door opened just then amd Liam walked in. “What’s this? Zara is awake? Why are you two crying?” He rushed to the bed and took my hands. He held me till my trembling body calmed down and my loud sobs reduced to a light sniffing. Maya had stopped crying now and gone to the bathroom to wash her face. Liam took my face in his hands and stared directly into my eyes. “Everything will be fine,” okay? The intensity of his gaze made my body shiver. I looked away and he released me from his grip. Maya walked in from the bathroom. “Where’s the doctor you went to call?” Her question was directed to Liam who responded with a shake of his head. “He wasn’t in, so I came back,” he added. “I don’t think I need a doctor, I feel better now,” I said, touching my head. The ache had dulled considerably and I felt a bit relieved. “Thank you so much, Liam,” I gave him a weak smile and stood up to go to the bathroom. “I think a bath will do me some good,” I said to no one in particular and entered the bathroom. “I’ll leave you girls now, take care of yourselves,” Liam’s voice trailed off as he left the room and closed the door with a soft click. I came out of the bath feeling refreshed. “You look better already,” Maya said, dropping her phone on the bed. “I do feel better,” I replied. “Do you want me to stay here and keep you company for the night?” She asked with concern. “No dear, I’m good. You should get some rest too, you’ve been everywhere since yesterday,” I answered her. “Okay then, make sure you get some rest. I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said with a tired smile and left the room. I was finally alone. The pain in my chest had reduced to a dull feeling, but I still wanted a form of closure. I needed to have a talk with one or both of them, there just had to be something. My phone vibrated. A text message. It was from Storme. “I’m sorry, Zara, I didn’t mean for this to happen this way. I didn’t see you at the house today” The audacity! He wasn’t sorry for cheating on me with my best friend? Or what was the meaning of that lousy text? He even dared to show up for the meeting? How come I didn’t see him? He must have taken it for granted that I wouldn’t tell my dad what I saw. He knew how much I cared about my father’s health and would never upset him with such news. “Ah,” I chuckled, the sadness in me turned to anger. Another text came in. From Selene. “And here comes the theiving b***h,” I scoffed. “Can I see you? We need to talk” I ignored the message and went to bed. If she wanted to talk, she knew where to find me. I would not waste my sleep over people who felt it was okay to betray my trust. I woke up the next morning to a feeling of lightness, yesterday’s problems forgotten. Storme and Selene’s betrayal had not hurt me the way I thought it would. “Well, that’s a good thing,” I mumbled to myself. I went about my dressing with the same feeling of lightness I woke up with, and went downstairs to have breakfast. I was surprised to see that the table had not been set. Instead, everybody stood around in groups of twos and threes, discussing in low tones. “Morning, Zee!” Maya called from behind and I turned to face her. She looked bright, but her face bore a look of seriousness. “What’s happening,” I asked, gesturing at the small crowd im the living room. “There’s going to be an attack on the vicious howl pack. That’s the outcome of yesterday’s meeting, let’s grab a quick breakfast,” she said and dragged me towards the kitchen. An attack? I didn’t remember the last time something like this happened. Did we even have the capability to carry out an attack on anyone? And this wasn’t just any random pack, it was the vicious howl! I remembered Lucien, or what was his name? My mate, and something flicked inside me.
