Lucien’s POV
“Lucien, you can’t leave me here!” Meredith screamed and got up from the bed where she had been laying on all morning.
I just stood there by the door and watched her. Her red hair fell all over her face as she stood.
As I stood there looking at her, I realized that what I felt for her wasn’t affection, but acceptance.
“The least you could do is stay with me, I need you right now. This is not the time for you to just leave me here all alone, mourning our baby,” she covered her face with her palms and let out a sob.
Just a month ago, she had greeted me with the news that we were expecting a pup. The news had come to me as a shock, I had always believed that only an Alpha’s true mate could give him pups. That was how it had always been. And Meredith was not my mate, so how could it be? But I accepted it all the same, maybe it was high time history changed.
Meredith had been presented to my pack years ago as a peace offering from the Iron Fang pack after defeating them in battle for the fifth time in a row.
She was to be my Luna, but I tried to make her a maid because I wasn’t attracted to her, and moreover I was still on the quest to find my mate. After trying all she could to get close to me, one thing led to the other and I found her in my bed one night. I accepted her because I didn’t have many options at the moment, and we were doing well.
She persuaded me to perform a bonding ritual so we could become mates, I only agreed to it after she had nearly exhausted the tears in her eyes. We tried all we could to bond, one bonding ritual after the other, all failed.
Meredith was not my mate, and sadly, she would never be. The moon goddess had played a wicked one in our relationship. But I was happy all the same, we could make this work, until she lost the pregnancy suddenly. The events leading to the miscarriage were still a mystery to me, but I didn’t press further. Meredith was grieving.
I went to her and took her in my arms.
“It’s okay, don’t cry.” I said to her. Showing affection wasn’t my thing, I was getting impatient already.
“There are some things I need to see to, I promise you it’s in this pack’s best interests,” I added.
She loosened herself from my embrace and went back to the bed in silence.
“I’ll be back soon, take care of yourself” I added and left the room, closing the door gently behind me .
My best friend and beta, Adrian was waiting for me in the hallway.
“Are you really going to go through with this plan? It is quite dangerous, Lucien. You’ll be in enemy territory unguarded,” he said with concern written in his voice as he fell into step beside me.
“Ugh,” I grunted uncomfortably. I found it extremely annoying when Adrian tried to be caring or protective of me. What was I? A sissy?
“I would have you remember that no one who is not a member of this pack knows my identity. All they know about the vicious howl’s alpha is that he’s a fierce, ugly looking beast behind his mask, so there’s no danger of anyone’s recognizing me,” I replied.
“And you can stop following me too, I’m not your wife,” I glared at him and went out of the house.
I left the manor through a secret exit, leaving my car behind. This was a discreet mission and the last thing I needed was attracting attention to myself.
My destination was the Bloodmoon pack’s estate.
“The bastards!” I cursed under my breath.
Things had been quiet for too long, who knew what they were planning next? I just needed to infiltrate their estate now and see things for myself. And that old alpha, who did he think he was anyway? He should have died a long time ago and left the pack affairs to the young ones, but he didn’t. And now he would see why he should have done so.
“Ah...ah,” I gave a slight chuckle.
I was in the woods now, I still had a long way to go, and wouldn’t make it before nightfall if I wasn’t fast enough, so I shifted into my wolf form and ran.
I didn’t take the bush paths to avoid being caught, but instead wove in and out of the heavily wooded forest, occasionally brushing my sides against sharp tree branches, but that didn’t matter, what was a few bruises compared to what those bastards did to my boys?
It was dusk when I arrived at the small wooded area behind the vicious howl estate. The sun was just beginning to set, and from where I was hiding, I could hear music coming from inside.
They were holding a mating ceremony, probably for the alpha’s daughter to find a mate from what Adrian had told me,
I knew that the whole pack would be present with other invited guests, there would definitely be a crowd and I would blend in effortlessly.
The gates opened and started driving in. I left my hideout and joined a group of young men strolling in.
I kept a straight face while looking ahead to avert being dragged into their conversation. We got to the event arena and I took my seat at the far back of the auditorium where I could easily take my leave at any time.
It was a few minutes past eight when the noises finally died down and the ceremony started. I paid no attention to whatever nonsense they were doing, instead I was looking around, observing.
Suddenly all the lights went off and the spotlight turned on the princess as she walked through the crowd towards the stage.
Zara, so that was her name. The two guys sitting behind me were murmuring in low voices, it seemed they were talking about her because I heard them mention the name while looking at her.
Immediately my eyes landed on her, I knew. Her scent attacked my senses all at once. It was sweet and spicy, like cinnamon crushed in a field of flowers, her scent felt so right and perfect for me. Impossible.
This was what I had spent years searching far and wide for, but who would have thought I would find it in enemy territory?
Zara Emberfall. My sworn enemy’s daughter, was my mate.
The atmosphere around me changed and my wolf almost let out a loud growl, but I held him back. The beast would have leapt out and gone for her if I hadn’t reignedhim in.
My eyes were on her, I watched as she staggered almost unnoticed because of her partner’s hold on her. The bond had pulled her too.
Because of the lights, I couldn’t see the face of the man who was walking with her earlier. But I saw him now, it was the one who would take over as Alpha when old Hunter died. He must have thought they would mate tonight, the bastard.
I couldn’t control my wolf any longer. The almost feral urge to rise from where I sat, run through the crowd and tear the bastard holding her hand apart overcame me, but instead, I stood up and made to go out of the event arena.
“Thump!” I hit something, or was it someone?
“s**t! Are you blind or something? Can you not look ahead at where you’re going?” The person asked with a gruff voice, and his friend who was sitting beside him too stood up to defend him.
“No, not now,” I said under my breath. The last thing I wanted was to create a scene here of all places.
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking,” I said, unlike myself and turned around.
“Oh, not so fast,” he said, throwing me a punch on my shoulder. A fight was brewing as more people stood up to confront me, I definitely didn’t look like one of them.
Well, the only solution now would be to run. And run I did.
I didn’t stop until I had reached my hideout in the woods. I remained there for close to an hour, panting heavily and trying to see if anyone had followed me, when suddenly a twig snapped behind me and I perceived the scent. It was her. Zara.
I whirled around immediately, and we simultaneously asked,
“who are you?”
“Well, you might want to tell that to me first, because I asked first,” she replied with an arrogant tone.
I was indignated. Wasn’t it enough that the moon goddess had decided to pair me with my enemy? Did she have to be a spoilt brat too?
“Hmm…” I cleared my throat once and straightened.
“Whatever happened back there, I’m sure you already know. You, a female of the blood moon pack, are… well… my mate,” I added with a tone of disgust.
“I know that. I perceived your scent too. But you sound like that’s a bad thing, who are you?” She asked again, coming closer.
I took a step back for every step she took towards me.
“Whatever happens here tonight remains a secret between us, or you’re dead meat, together with your father and your whole pack, I am your enemy. We can never be mates! Whatever trick fate is trying to play on me will not work,” I told her.
She stood there, her eyes shone with an amused twinkle at the sound of my deep, husky voice, she was probably trying to decode what I had just said.
“My enemy? Why are we enemies? You’re my mate, I’m sure about that because I felt the bond. What’s your name?” She kept asking, the light of the moon overhead reflecting in her blue eyes.
Losing patience, I grabbed her by the neck and pushed her against a tree trunk.
“I am Alpha of the vicious howl pack, the same vicious howl pack which your father attacked many years ago, killing my whole family in the process and leaving me alone to the cruel hands of fate.
So now, if you want to live, you will return to your wicked father and pretend that none of this happened. You didn’t meet me here tonight. And the bond? Forget it. It will die out soon enough. Now get the hell out of here,” I said in one breath, releasing my grip on her neck.
She fell against the tree and collapsed, but I didn’t care. I left her there and took my leave.
“She will wake up soon enough,” I thought to myself as I made my way back through the woods.
I stopped short.
She was still unconscious, leaving her there would mean leaving her in danger.
“Huh!” I almost let out a chuckle. Why would I be bothered if anything happened to her?
