Zara’s POV He stood facing the window, his back to the door. “Dad,” I called again. “I was disappointed when you told me about your mate, but I didn’t suppose there was anything you could do about it. Fate has cruel ways of dealing with people,” he paused. He didn’t turn around, and I was only glad, because I couldn’t afford to see that look in his eyes again. “When you told me about it, I hoped that the bond between you and that son of the devil would die out naturally, and you would take your position as the Luna of the bloodmoon pack, which is what I have always wanted, but now I hear of a secret rendezvous between you and my enemy? Did you really expose pack information to your lover?” He finally turned to face me, but I kept my gaze down, avoiding his eyes completely. “Have you nothing to say?” He asked sternly. The sadness in me gave way to a completely new emotion, one that I had never felt around my father. I ran up here in hopes that he would at least believe me, that he would summon his pack and tell them that he trusted his daughter, and that she would never betray the pack, but judging from his words, he believed them! “You didn’t wait for me before accepting the words of other people, did you?” I asked and straightened to look him in the eyes. “I ran here hoping to hear that you don’t believe a word of what they are saying, that you want to hear what I have to say first, but it seems your mind is made up,” I added with hurt in my voice. He walked slowly to the table and picked up an envelope. “Here,” he thrust it at me and sat on the sofa with his head in his palms. I opened it with sweaty hands and brought out a photo. My feet buckled under me and my vision blurred. It was a photo of me and Lucien standing close to each other. It must have been taken that day at the mall when I had bumped into him suddenly. “You can see that the accusations are not baseless,” he said, lifting his head to look at me. “Dad, I can explain. It isn't what it looks like, that man…” He cut me off with a wave of his hands. “I need to rest,” he said as he motioned for his aide to help him to his sleeping area. I stood rooted to the same spot. Had my dad just dismissed me? He didn’t even want to hear what I had to say, and even if I managed to say anything to him, it was unlikely that he'd believe me. His mind was made up. I walked out of the room in disbelief at what had just transpired. Maya was waiting for me outside. “How did it go? What did he say? I tried to explain to him but he wasn’t having it, did you tell him that it’s a lie?” She attacked me with endless questions. “His mind is made up, look,” I said as I handed her the pictures. “What! Who did this?” She almost screamed in disbelief. I heaved a sigh of frustration as I walked back to my room, Maya trailing behind me. I burst into tears immediately when I got into the room and sat on the bed. Maya was too stunned herself to comfort me, not like I could even be comforted if she tried. My wolf had retreated to the innermost part of me so that I couldn’t even feel her presence. She must have been feeling as badly as I did. I woke the next morning to see Maya gone, she must have left after I slept off. I yawned and opened the windows to let in the soft morning sunshine. Memories from last night swept through my brain, from escaping Lucien’s vengeful eyes at the cinema to coming back home to meet everyone pointing accusing fingers at me. I yawned again, holding my tummy as pangs of hunger hit me. I had skipped dinner last night, partly because I was too sad and angry, and partly because I wasn’t ready to face anyone with the news about me circling around. I wanted to hole myself up in my room all day, I couldn’t trust my emotions enough to be around people, I knew I would break down in tears if even one person tried to accuse me again. “Wouldn’t that mean you feel guilty? You would only be proving them right!” My wolf reproved me. She was right. Hiding away would mean I accepted whatever it was they were saying about me, and I wasn’t ready to let that happen. I had a hurried bath and dressed up in low spirits, I had to go and eat breakfast anyway. Why starve myself to death because of something I wasn’t even guilty of? I saw Selene standing with arms akimbo at the foot of the stairs with her new friends, Gwen and ine other girl whose name I didn’t know. It looked like she had been waiting for me to come out of my room. “Well, well, well,” she said in an unusually high pitched voice, clapping as she did so. “If it isn’t the enemy pack’s future Luna,” she added, laughing together with her friends. I ignored her and went towards the dining table, conscious of about ten pairs of eyes boring into me. I took a plate and fished out some food with the intention of carrying it back to my room to eat, but decided against it when Selene came to stand in front of me. “Wow, so you want to eat! Your lover didn’t feed you enough to last you for days?” She asked with a smirk. I said nothing to her, but sat down and ate my food in silence. I fought hard to keep back the tears burning behind my eyes. I would not break down here in front of them. I wouldn’t let Selene see my tears, not anymore. She must see me as a pushover. Sleeping with Storme right under my nose, and now doing this to me in my own fathers house? I realized that I was weak, and that was why everyone found ways to take advantage of me, even my own father had lost trust in me. I finished the food hurriedly and ran back upstairs to my room, wondering why Maya hadn’t come to breakfast. I decided to check on her first. “Maya,” I called as I opened her door to find her sprawled on the bed with tears in her eyes. She sat up and motioned for me to sit on the bed. “I’m sorry, Zee,” she said with a shaky voice and patted my back. “What for?” I wondered. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you, you’ve been through so much and I couldn’t even stand up for you, I have failed you, Zara. I’m so sorry,” she sobbed. It was my turn to comfort her now. “You didn’t fail me, haven’t you been the one running around with me all this time? Thanks to you, I didn’t even feel the heartbreak Storme caused me that much,” I said and patted her face dry with my handkerchief. “We’ll be fine,” I said, though my situation looked far from fine, but I couldn’t give up just yet. I would make my father see, he had to believe his daughter. I knew that it was probably old age that was confusing him, because how could he abandon his favorite child just because of a rumor and some few photos? “I suggest we talk to father again,” Maya finally said with a clearer voice. She had stopped crying and was brushing her hair. “That’s what was on my mind, I suggest we go back to talk to him together,” I replied.
