War!

Lucien’s POV I sat in my office, deeply worried and lost in thoughts. I had been unable to get that girl off my mind. It was strange enough that she was my fated mate, but stranger still was the fact that I felt the bond pulling me stronger by the day. “f**k!” I cursed out loud. I would sooner lose my place as Alpha than allow myself joined in anyway with that cursed pack. I wanted her forgotten, and I had tried all I could. I turned to Meredith, but even she couldn’t quell the cursed longing raging my heart. “You should see this, Lucien,” Adrian said as he barged into my office and came towards the table. “Here’s the blueprint for the new building to be added to the construction site. I think they should hold off on beginning until the main building is halfway finished, so they can both be ready at the same time,” Adrian said, placing the large piece of paper on my desk. “Oh,” was my only reply. He looked at me and at once noticed that something was wrong. In a careless moment, I had revealed to him that the bloodmoon girl was my mate. He had laughed it off at first as one of my bad attempts at making a joke. Even Adrian found it impossible that that would happen to me, the moon goddess was playing a huge prank on me, on us. “Are you thinking about her?” He asked, arms akimbo. “Thinking about who?” I asked him instead, getting irritated by the questioning look on his face. “You know who, Lucien, don’t play that game with me. Her, your mate! Who else?” He asked, gesturing wildly. I huffed. “I am the Alpha of this pack, I would have you remember. I have a thousand and one thing to think about! Why do you imagine I would waste precious time thinking about Hunter’s daughter?” I bellowed at him. He shrank back at my voice and raised his hands in surrender. “Dear Alpha, could you please revise the plan I just submitted at your table? It needs your royal approval,” he said in mock respect and bowed. Adrian, the fool. He was the only one who could do this with me as much as he feared me. And honestly, sometimes, just like right now, I wish I could grab him and wring life out of him for getting on my nerves. I ignored him and stood to pace the room. I was due for a run, my muscles aches from sitting around all day, attending meetings, reviewing and approving projects, and listening to stupid plans. So much for being Alpha, I needed a break. I headed out of the office with Adrian trailing after me. “Where are you going?” He kept asking. I ignored him and continued walking, past the office and main building, till I was finally at the wooded area behind the manor. “A run? Bring it on, let’s see if I can outrun you today,” Adrian said, rubbing his hands together and licking his lips in mischief. That was a farce. No one could outrun me, he was pulling my legs, obviously trying to bring me out of my sour mood, but he was doing a bad job at it. I was getting really pissed and felt like punching him in the face. It was a cool afternoon, the gentle breeze blew through my hair, calming my body as I prepared my legs to run, but for some reason, I felt uneasy. There was a lingering feeling in my stomach, like it was sinking. I looked beside me at Adrian, checking to see if he had felt it too. “I think I should go back to the house, maybe we both shouldn’t be away at the same time,” he said as he shifted his weight uncomfortably from one foot to another. So he had felt it too. I had thought my wolf picked up an intruder lurking around, but it could also be something going on back at the house. I cleared my throat suddenly. “I don’t have the leisure of time for this, I should head back, a lot of matters need my attention anyway. What did you say about the new building plan?” I asked, suddenly finding interest in the report he had brought to me earlier. As we neared the house, the sinking feeling in my stomach grew. I became alert. This was no ordinary feeling, my wolf sensed that we were being attacked. “Adrian, gather the soldiers quick! Station guards around the house, and reinforce the perimeter,” I ordered him and he scurried away. I took my phone and sent an email to elder Alaric, the meeting later today would not hold. They could stay back in their houses while I sorted things over here without involving them, whatever it was. Adrian was back. “All done, sir,” he said. The soldiers had started taking their positions. “Where are my personal guards? Have them in position to see any threat that may be coming from any angle. I don’t want…” My speech was interrupted by a loud bang. The ground beneath our feet trembled, and for a split second, everything went silent. Then chaos erupted. A second explosion tore through the eastern perimeter wall, sending stones and dirt flying into the air. Soldiers shouted warnings as smoke billowed upward in thick black clouds. “They breached the wall!” someone yelled. A chilling howl split through the air and my blood ran cold. “It’s the Bloodmoon monsters,” I growled. Adrian’s face darkened instantly. Out of the smoke emerged dozens of wolves with their eyes glowing like embers. They moved as one deadly wave, charging through the broken perimeter with a kind of speed that was terrifying. Behind them were soldiers with their weapons in place, waiting to attack. The Bloodmoon Pack had come prepared, but they were about to find out I, Lucien, would never allow what happened years ago to repeat itself “DEFEND THE MANOR!” I roared. The soldiers answered with battle cries, and in seconds the battlefield exploded into violence. Wolves collided with wolves, tearing at each other and bloodying the grounds. The peaceful grounds of the estate transformed into a war zone. I shifted mid-run, my bones cracked and my muscles expanded. My massive black wolf burst free, landing heavily on the grass before launching straight into the enemy ranks. The first Bloodmoon warrior didn’t see me coming. I crashed into him, sending him rolling across the ground, and before he could recover, I slammed my paw into his side and threw him into another attacker. To my left, Adrian shifted and tore through a pair of wolves attempting to flank us. “More incoming!” he barked through the mind-link. I saw them. The tree line suddenly came alive as more Bloodmoon warriors emerged from all sides “Damn!” I cursed under my breath. This was a coordinated attack. The enemy split into groups immediately. Some targeted the manor while others engaged our warriors directly. They knew exactly what they were doing. A large grey wolf lunged at me.I twisted aside and sank my teeth into his shoulder. He yelped but managed to rake his claws across my flank before retreating. I ignored the pain burning through me. My focus shifted to the ridge overlooking the manor. A figure stood there. I recognized him immediately as the one who had been with the princess that night, the one who was her supposed lover, and their incoming alpha. His eyes locked onto mine, and a dark shadow passed briefly through his face. My cover had been broken. He knew me now, he knew that I was the alpha of the vicious howl pack, but he had only seen my beast form, that was a relief. My face would remain a mystery to them for a long time. But that was the least of my concerns. The bastard wasn’t even fighting, had he sent his minions after me just to stand there and watch idly? Rage surged through me and I charged toward the ridge. My business was with him, not his playboys. Several Bloodmoon warriors immediately intercepted me. I tore through one, knocked aside another, but more kept coming. The fight dragged me away from him, exactly where he wanted me. I turned as a loud crash echoed behind me, a part of the outer wall had collapsed. The soldiers stationed there scrambled to recover while Bloodmoon warriors flooded through the opening. “Reinforce the west side!” Adrian shouted through the link. “I’m on it!” I sprinted back. The battlefield had become a nightmare. Dust and smoke filled the air. The scent of blood was everywhere, and neither side was ready to back down. For every Bloodmoon wolf we pushed back, two more seemed to appear. Yet our warriors refused to yield an inch. Bodies littered the ground, but remarkably, neither side had gained advantage over the other. Then suddenly, a shrill whistle sounded. Almost immediately, the bloodmoon soldiers began to retreat, and in an instant, they all boarded their vehicles and drove off one after the other. Adrian was ordering our soldiers to follow them, but I stopped him halfway. “No need for that,” I called to them as I shifted back and spat out blood. It would be an unwise decision to follow them. We needed to reinforce and re-strategize, the reason behind this attack was unknown, we would have to find that out first. Clean everywhere up, and bury the dead soldiers. The rest of you will be on duty tonight, we can no longer take chances. I headed back into the house to check on Meredith and the workers. The house was almost empty. Where did they all go? I met two maids cowering in fear behind the kitchen counter. “Where is Meredith?” I barked at them and they wailed out loud. “Ugh,” I was getting irritated. I went into her room to find her passed out on the floor. “Meredith!” I growled hard.
