CHAPTER FOUR

1284 Words
He heard the piercing scream of a woman in the woods. He could hear her panting, her feet dug into the ground as she ran. He couldn’t see her, but he heart her heart thumping wildly. He was on all four. He traced her, and found her still running. He couldn’t see what she was running from. He heard the snap of a twig and the woman cried. He kept running to her. The salt and copper smell of blood stung his wolf nose. He got into a clearing and saw the woman, with a gash at her belly, blood oozed out of it. Her eyes was filled with fear as he approached her. He recognized her. Her curly hair was now a matted mess, her soft brown eyes looked sunken. It didn’t have the fire he saw in it earlier that day. Her delicately curved upper lip arched to meet her supple lower lip. They quivered as she spoke “Please don’t kill me”. Her eyes glistened with tears. He tried to reach out his hands to touch her, but they were paws and she shrank back. The woman stared in horror at something behind him. His hair stood. He turned to look. Something huge and black leapt over him. The woman’s scream deafened him and it turned to the high pitched buzzing of his alarm clock. Zeke's eyes flew open. He skin was damp with sweat, his breathing was uneven. That crazy eye waitress made her way into his dreams—as a nightmare. He had tried to avoid picking a fight with a woman who seemed poised for one. He had taken one look and one whiff at her to know she was two thins—trouble and his mate. He couldn’t help but feel a sinking in his heart as he remembered her fearful expression in his dream. Beyond the blood, he recalled the fullness of her lips, and how he badly wanted to run his had through those thick curls. Yesterday, the moment he had seem her, he had felt a sense of ownership. She was human, he told himself he was stupid to think the signs he got meant she was his mate. It was probably hormones. He didn’t need a woman distracting him right now. He wasn’t about to believe that the mate of an Alpha would be human. Ezekiel grunted in frustration and got out of bed. He fought the urge to check on her to make sure she was ok. “It was just a dream Ezekiel” he muttered to himself. It was six in the morning, he had to get to the station quickly and he was going to be eating at another diner for a while. “Morning Deputy Roberts” Adam greeted as Zeke got into the station. Ezekiel nodded at him. He was still pissed at Adam for the mess at the Diner yesterday. “I was just trying to pull a prank. You were so into those files, you needed a rude awakening” Adam had had the laugh of his life when Ezekiel had drank from the coffee mug without looking at it. He had spat it out immediately. Adam walked up to where Zeke was seated. “Should I make you some coffee?”. The question earned Adam a death glare from Ezekiel. Adam laughed. “How could anyone hate coffee?”. “I hate caffeine” Zeke answered and continued to look through his mail for any message from Thomas of the forensic team. He was thinking of going down there himself, since most officer were on other cases. This one was his and quite personal. “I'm a bit stuck on the McLeod burglary case” Adam intruded him again. He was fond of doing so, ever since Exekiel made the costly mistake of telling him he could reach out to him for anything when Adam had just been a rookie. “Adam! I have a case too” Zeke lashed. Adam flinched a bit. Zeke realized he had used his Alpha voice on him. On second thought he decided to help, if that would keep Adam busy and away from him for a while. “You said Mrs McLeod had a party at her house few weeks ago. Have you checked the guest list?” Adam swallowed recovering himself. "Yes sir, a few of them are from around here, a few are not. She’s wealthy, she wanted to host a big seventy years birthday and she wanted lots of friends and family around”. Adam relaxed a bit. “a lot of them returned that night. Some stayed at the hotels and only family members remained in the residence” Adam continued. “And you said the missing antique vase and Box of jewelry costs how much?” “About five hundred grand” “Hmmm…do a double check on everyone on the guest list and put more attention on those who left town immediately”. “But the burglary only happened a week later” Adam's eyebrow furrowed in confusion. “That’s precisely why you should focus on those set of people. How best do you think I would make myself look innocent of a crime a plan to commit?” “By doing the opposite of what I’m expected to do” “Exactly. And Mrs McLeod shows off a lot. This person has some level of knowledge of art or jewelry. They must have know the value and had an idea of what to take and what not to” Zeke explained. “Taking everything would have been a hassle to sell. Easy to track. they only took the few things of high value they knew they needed.” Adam's eyes widened as he caught on. “So we’re looking for someone who knows what they’re doing. Not a common thief” Adam chimed in. “Exactly. You could recheck the list of guest and what they do for a living and go nab our thief” Zeke smiled crookedly. He loved his job almost as much as he loved being a werewolf. It was the same as hunting a prey. “Thanks Deputy” Adam saluted as he stood. “No problem kid” “I feel I could get lucky today” Adam had mischief coloring his words. “What game are you playing” Zeke asked, his curiosity now peeked. Adam was just five years younger than him, but he acted like a kid sometimes. “Remember that waitress from yesterday. Dark curls, full lips, perfect figure. And can she spit fire!” Zeke tried to rein in his annoyance as Adam spoke. “I could ask her on a date Friday night. What do you think Deputy?” Ezekiel weighed all the different ways to snap Adam's neck. Adam was popular with the ladies, but he had a feeling this one was out of his league. Ezekiel though he was insane for feeling so overprotective over a woman he barely new. " Mate" his wolf reminded him again. He shrugged off the thought. He needed a strong Luna, not a human. Ezekiel still felt it was up to him to keep.the woman protected from leeches like Adam. “You'll be busy Friday night. I need help with rearranging those files.” Zeke pointed to the stack of files in a corner. Adam opened his mouth to argue but snapped it shut. He left quickly to avoid any more work being shoved his way. Ezekirl returned to his computer screen, a mail had popped up. It read ‘DNA REPORT’ from Thomas.
