Episode 20 — The Blood Moon Rises

1511 Words
The church bell rang through Blackpine. Once. Twice. Three times. Then silence. Silas stared at Viktor. “The First is dead?” Viktor nodded. “I watched it fall.” Silas's heart sank. “And my mother?” “Dying.” Silas stepped toward him. “You're lying.” Viktor smiled. “Go and see for yourself.” Elena grabbed Silas's arm. “Don't.” He looked at her. “She needs me.” “If you leave now, the Second will escape.” Silas froze. Viktor laughed quietly. “That's the choice.” Silas turned toward him. “What choice?” “Your mother or the village.” Silas's expression hardened. “You planned this.” “I prepared for it.” Viktor looked toward the blood-red moon through the church window. “The ritual must begin before the moon disappears.” Clara stepped forward. “You said Silas could restore the seal.” Viktor nodded. “He can.” “And Elena?” “She is the door.” Elena's face became pale. Viktor smiled. “But neither of them understands the final part.” Silas stared at him. “Tell me.” Viktor looked directly into his eyes. “One vessel must willingly open the door.” Silas looked at Elena. “And the other must close it.” Viktor nodded. “Exactly.” Silas suddenly understood. “You want Elena to open the door.” “Yes.” “And I'll close it.” “Yes.” “What happens to her?” Viktor's smile disappeared. “She remains inside.” Elena stepped backward. Silas looked at her. “No.” Viktor raised his hands. “Then let the Second enter this world.” A deep laugh echoed beneath the church. The walls began shaking. Clara looked toward the floor. “It's already moving.” Silas ran toward the hidden staircase. “Where are you going?” Elena shouted. “To my mother.” Elena followed. “You can't save her.” “I have to try.” They descended into the tunnels. The deeper they went, the hotter the air became. Black smoke filled the corridor. Clara covered her mouth. “This wasn't here before.” Silas pushed forward. At the end of the tunnel, they found the cavern. The First lay motionless beside the broken altar. The Black Wolf was beside it. Blood covered its black fur. Silas stopped. “Mama.” The wolf lifted its head. Its silver eyes were dim. Silas rushed toward it. He knelt beside the creature. “Stay with me.” The wolf touched his hand. Silas felt her presence inside his mind. Not words. Memories. His mother holding him as a baby. His father smiling. The Vane house before the fire. A family together. Then the night everything changed. Silas saw his mother standing before the First. She was afraid. But she stepped forward anyway. She took the wolf's blood into herself. And became the guardian. Silas opened his eyes. “You saved me.” The wolf breathed weakly. Silas held its head. “I won't let them take you again.” The wolf looked toward Elena. Then toward the broken altar. Silas understood. “She wants me to finish it.” Elena nodded. “She knows what must happen.” Silas looked at the First. “Is it really dead?” The Black Wolf gave a low growl. Silas looked at its eyes. “No.” The creature turned toward the darkness. Something moved. The First slowly lifted its head. Its silver eyes opened. Silas stared. “You're alive.” The First struggled to stand. “BARELY.” Silas looked toward the Black Wolf. “Can you stop the Second?” The First shook its head. “NO.” “Then what can?” The First looked at Silas. “YOU.” A violent roar came from beneath them. The Second emerged from the darkness. It moved toward the altar. The Black Wolf immediately stood. Silas stepped in front of his mother. “No.” The Second stopped. Its eyeless face tilted toward him. Then it smiled. Its mouth stretched across its face. A voice entered Silas's mind. Open. Silas gritted his teeth. “No.” Open. The creature moved closer. Elena suddenly screamed. She fell to her knees. Silas turned. “Elena!” Black veins spread across her neck. Clara rushed toward her. “What is happening?” Elena struggled to breathe. “The door…” She looked at Silas. “It's trying to open me.” Silas ran toward her. The Second lunged. The Black Wolf intercepted it. The two creatures collided. The cavern shook. Silas grabbed Elena. “Stay with me.” She looked at him. “I can't hold it.” “Yes, you can.” “It wants out.” “Don't let it.” Elena screamed. Her eyes turned completely black. Silas held her tighter. “Remember who you are.” Elena stared at him. “My name…” “Say it.” “Elena.” “Again.” “Elena Vane.” Silas smiled. “That's right.” Her eyes slowly returned to normal. The Black Wolf was thrown across the cavern. Silas looked back. “Mama!” The Second turned toward him. Silas stood. His eyes became silver. The wolf inside him awakened. He felt claws beneath his skin. His breathing changed. Elena looked frightened. “Silas…” He looked at her. “Stay back.” The Second charged. Silas charged too. They collided. The impact sent Silas across the cavern. He hit the stone wall. He stood again. The Second attacked. Silas ducked. He struck its chest. Nothing. The creature grabbed him. Silas felt his bones crushing. Then a howl echoed through the cavern. The Black Wolf attacked from behind. The Second released Silas. Silas fell. His mother stood over him. Wounded. Weak. But still fighting. Silas whispered: “Thank you.” The wolf looked at him. Then she turned toward the Second. She charged. The First suddenly shouted. “NOW!” Silas looked toward the altar. “What?” “THE SEAL!” Silas understood. He grabbed the silver key. Elena stood beside him. “What do we do?” “Use the blood seal.” “Whose blood?” Silas looked at her. “Ours.” They cut their palms. Their blood fell onto the ancient symbols. The chamber shook. The symbols began glowing. The Second screamed. The Black Wolf held it back. Silas and Elena placed their hands against the altar. The seal activated. Silver light spread across the floor. The Second began being pulled backward. Silas shouted: “Hold on!” Elena screamed. The creature fought against the seal. Then it looked directly at Elena. Its mouth opened. DOOR. Elena cried out. Silas grabbed her hand. “Don't listen!” The Second pulled harder. Elena's body began sliding toward it. Silas held her. “I won't let you go!” She looked at him. “Silas!” He pulled harder. The seal was failing. The First shouted: “ONE MUST CHOOSE!” Silas looked at Elena. She understood. “No.” He shook his head. “We're not doing this.” Elena squeezed his hand. “We don't have another choice.” “Yes, we do.” Silas looked toward his mother. Then the First. Then the Second. An idea came to him. He remembered the words from the book. Two vessels. One guardian. One door. He looked at Elena. “The pact doesn't say the guardian has to be a Vane.” Elena stared. “What are you thinking?” Silas smiled. “We give the wolf a new choice.” He turned toward his mother. “Mama.” The Black Wolf looked at him. Silas raised his bleeding hand. “Take it.” Elena's eyes widened. “Silas, no!” He didn't stop. The Black Wolf approached. Silas pressed his palm against its forehead. Silver light exploded through the cavern. The wolf howled. The Second screamed. The seal began changing. The blood of Silas. The blood of Elena. And the blood of the Black Wolf. Three forces became one. The Second was dragged backward. The First watched in disbelief. “This was never done before.” Silas shouted: “Then it's time someone tried!” The Second disappeared beneath the stone. The cracks closed. The cavern fell silent. Silas collapsed. Elena caught him. The Black Wolf stood beside them. Alive. But different. Its eyes were no longer silver. They were gold. Silas looked up. “What happened?” The First stared at the wolf. “The pact has changed.” Silas frowned. “How?” The First looked toward him. “You are no longer the vessel.” Silas looked at Elena. “Then what are we?” The First answered: “Free.” For the first time in twenty years, the mountain became silent. But far beneath the sealed chamber, something moved. A single whisper rose through the darkness. This isn't over.
