“Aria! What are you doing here?” Elijah growled.
“I came to help.” I hissed with a blank expression. We were standing in the doorway of Elena's house, getting ready to kill Klaus.
“He won't like this.” Elijah growled, running a hand through his brown locks.
“Aria, what is he talking about?” Elena asked me.
“Nothing. He doesn't know what he's saying.” I snapped, glaring at Elijah.
“I know exactly what I'm talking about and I know that Klaus will be even angrier. He'll kill all of us because Aria decided to tag along!” Elijah growled. Instinctively I crouched low, wanting to spring at him.
“Can someone please tell me what you two are blabbering on about?” Elena sighed in exasperation. I glared at Elijah, and he nodded his head.
“Fine,” I sighed. I pulled out of my crouch, wanting nothing more than to feel the adrenaline pump through my veins. But I would get my revenge…I just needed to be patient.
“You know that I'm an Original,” I told Elena, and she nodded nervously.
“You see, she was the first vampire to change outside of our family.” Elijah snapped impatiently.
“What?” Elena asked in astonishment.
“This is my story Elijah, I get to tell it.” I snapped, sticking my tongue out at him.
“Who's this?” A boy asked laughing at me. He walked over to us. He had a soft face, and light eyes. His light brown hair fell into his eyes just a little bit.
“This is Aria. An…original.” Elena said nervously.
“What? Do we…kill her?” The boy asked, glancing down at Elena.
“If you want to kill Klaus I suggest you don't kill me just yet.” I smirked.
“I'm confused…” The boy trailed off.
“She's going to help us kill Klaus. Aria, this is my brother Jeremy.” Elena introduced us.
“Pleasure.” I said extending my hand. He shook it, glancing nervously at me all the while.
“You don't have to be afraid of me. I'm not going to hurt you.” I smiled gently. Jeremy nodded, but kept throwing me wary looks.
“So Are we set? I'm going to need a really big glass of-” Damon Salvatore stopped dead in his tracks. “What the hell is she doing here?” He growled.
“Nice to see you too, Damon.” I smirked.
“You two know each other?” Elena asked me.
“Yes. And I see he's still the same…Always chasing after things he can never have.” I smirked turning my head towards her. She blushed, looking down to the floor.
“Well, the meanest vampire in town had already called dibs on you, so I thought I'd give him a little competition.” Damon smirked, looking down at me. He was a head taller, but I was a lot meaner.
“No one has dibs on me. I do what I want.” I hissed, my fangs growing out.
“That's not what he thought.” Damon smirked.
“What is going on?” Elena asked warily.
“I'll explain everything on the way. If we don't leave now we'll never get this chance again.” I hissed. I stomped out the door.
“Did I make you mad?” Damon mocked in a sad voice. “Good,” He hissed.
“Do you mind if I kill him too?” I asked Elena.
“I wouldn’t mind that much,” Stefan smirked walking out of the house.
“Come on guys, Damon isn’t that bad,” Elena defended him, but smiled nonetheless.
“Thank you Elena.” Damon smirked getting into the driver’s seat.
“Yes you are that bad. Now get out of my car.” I snapped, opening the car door.
“I’m driving.” Damon smirked.
“It’s my car. I’m driving.” I growled, grabbing Damon by the collar and throwing him out of the car.
“The 21st Century hasn’t changed you one bit.” Elijah grinned.
“Well, my utter disregard for politeness was what attracted Klaus to me in the first place, wasn’t it?” I smirked.
“What?” I heard a blonde girl gasp.
“Caroline this is Aria.” Elena explained staring at me with a peculiar expression.
“So Klaus liked you?” Elena clarified.
“Liked? That’s an understatement. Klaus would have done anything for this girl.” Elijah grinned.
“Now this I gotta hear.” The witch, Bonnie grinned. We all got into the car. Elijah and I occupied the front seats, while the rest filed into the back.
“So where’s he meeting you?” I asked Elena.
“Fells Church.” She said.
“I still don’t like this.” Stefan grimaced.
“It’s the only chance we have. Not only is Aria a witch, but she can help Bonnie channel her powers. The both of them can kill Klaus together without hurting themselves.” Elena explained.
“You’re a witch?” Damon asked.
“One of the first bloodlines. Her sisters were the ones to cast the spell on Klaus that kept his werewolf side at bay.” Elijah explained.
“And from that day on he has sworn to lift the curse. And kill me.” I sighed.
“So you’re a vampire…and a witch?” Jeremy clarified.
“Yep. Don’t worry I’m not a werewolf too. Just two supernatural beings.” I smirked.
“No wonder Klaus wanted you so bad.” Damon smirked.
“Would you please shut up.” I snapped.
“I wanna here the story behind you and Klaus.” The blonde, Caroline, begged.
“Argh! Girls and their romance.” Damon sighed.
“Go to hell Damon.” I snapped. “I’ll tell you the story, but I want no interruptions.” I added looking at Elijah.
“I can’t promise that. You might leave out a very important detail. Like what day it was, or how beautiful his eyes were that day,” Elijah said sarcastically.
“I don’t appreciate your sarcasm.” I snapped, sticking my tongue out at him.
“Are you sure you’re an Original? You seem like a normal teenage girl,” Elena laughed.
“Who do you think invented that whole 'sticking out the tongue' thing?” I laughed.
“Makes sense. Brainless gesture coming from a brainless girl.” Damon snapped.
“If you don’t shut up, I swear to God, I’ll cut your heart out and feed it to you.” I growled. Damon hissed at me, but he backed off.
“So anyway. It was Klaus’s 26 birthday, am I right?’ I asked Elijah. He nodded and I carried on. “My first time meeting him. And let me just tell you, Klaus was the most charming man there.” I smiled, remembering the way he bowed, and asked me to dance. “At the moment of our first dance I realized there was something different about Klaus. He wasn’t like all the other men. There was something…dark about him. But nonetheless, he courted me. Like any girl, I was ruled by my emotions. I didn’t see through his façade,” I sighed.
“Now that’s not fair. Klaus cared deeply for you,” Elijah said.
“Well it doesn’t matter now,” I said only to him. “By the time I had known he was a vampire, I was too deeply involved. I didn’t want to see him hurt, and when he told me he was part werewolf, I knew I had to do something. Having that much power would kill someone. He never knew that I was a witch. So I gathered my sisters, and we cast the spell. By then he was so enraged that he didn’t care about anything anymore, but he was really good at putting on a show. On the night of our engagement he…changed me.” I whispered the last part. Knowing how much it hurt back then, I couldn’t let myself relive those memories. I couldn’t go down that road again. I pushed away the memories and blinked away the already formed tears.
“That’s so…” Bonnie muttered.
“Sad,” Elena finished huskily.
“But what did Damon mean about some guy calling dibs on you?” Caroline asked me.
“Klaus was a well feared vampire. Everyone knew about his story with Aria, and he’s sworn to kill every and any vampire that tried to touch her.” Damon said bluntly.
“So you decide to push Klaus’s buttons.” Elena said.
“Klaus never found out. Aria wasn’t the type to fall for my tricks.” Damon smirked. “Besides, you were you a little too depressing for me. Very…emo.” Damon asked at me.
“Go to hell.” I snapped.
“So did you and Klaus ever run into each other?” Elena asked.
“I’ve never seen him since the night of our engagement.” I muttered.
“So this will be your first meeting…after that incident.” Elena said. I nodded, unable to answer.
“Maybe you shouldn’t go. Who knows what Klaus will do if he sees you there?’ Stefan added worriedly.
“You’re all pitying the girl like she’s some pathetic damsel in distress. Leave her be, she knows what she’s doing.” Damon snapped. He stared intently at me, and I added a mental thank you to him.
“Damon, Klaus could kill her.” Elena snapped.
“No he won’t.” Elijah said softly. I shot a glance at him. He was looking down at his hands and speaking in a soft voice. “Klaus would kill himself before he’d hurt Aria.”
“I don’t get it. Didn’t you say that Klaus has been out to kill you because you cursed him?” Elena asked me.
“That’s what I’ve thought for the past thousand odd years or so,” I whispered.
“So you ran away because you thought that Klaus wanted to kill you?” Elijah asked.
“Yeah,” I muttered.
“Do you know what you’ve put him through. He wouldn’t even hunt. He kept trying to starve himself. Eventually I told him that if he regained his strength, I would do anything to help him find you,” He muttered.
“So Klaus has been looking for Aria ever since?” Caroline asked.
“Klaus found Aria after a year of searching.” Elijah said.
“What?” I asked, surprised.
“He just never did anything because he wanted you to come back to him. He’s always known where you’ve been hiding,” Elijah said simply.
“So you’re saying I’ve been on the run for nothing?” I snapped.
“Yes.”
“Great. Just great,” I muttered, clenching the steering wheel tightly.
“At least we know Klaus isn’t that heartless.” Elena murmured.
“Aria is the exception. He would do anything for her. But other than her, he will kill anything and everyone that stands in his way. Even me.” Elijah warned.
“He would kill his own brother, but he wouldn’t kill Aria?” Bonnie asked in disbelief.
“Aria was the only person that really knew Klaus.” Elijah muttered.
“Can we please stop talking about my tragic romance?” I asked in annoyance.
“I agree. We need to discuss the plan.” Damon said.
“Alright. So Elena will walk to the site that Klaus wanted to meet her at. Aria will be waiting in the trees, and when the moment’s right Aria will distract Klaus. Bonnie, you need to charge your powers, and when you’re ready I want you to signal Aria and you two can perform the spell that will kill Klaus.” Stefan said, all seriousness displayed.
“So what do we do?” Damon asked irritated.
“You’re the backup. If anything goes wrong, you show up and help us out.” I smirked.
“Will anything go wrong?” Jeremy asked me.
“Not if we do exactly what we’re supposed to. And Klaus doesn’t know I’m here. We can take him by surprise.” I grinned.
“You’d kill the only man that you’ve ever loved?” Elijah asked me.
“How do you know he’s the only man I’ve ever loved?” I snapped. Elijah gave me a pointed look.
“Yes, I’m killing the only man I’ve ever loved.” I whispered.
“This is a really sad love story,” Caroline muttered.
“Stop worrying about the love, and start worrying about the plan.” Damon snapped.
“Damon’s right. We need to focus.” I said. “Elena, where’s Fells Church?” I asked.
“Right here,” She said as I pulled into a graveyard parking space.
“Fell’s Church is a graveyard?” I muttered dryly.
“Don’t judge.” Bonnie giggled.
“I’m not,” I smiled. “But you could’ve given it a better name,” I grinned.
“We all need to be quiet now,” Elijah shushed us.
“Elena, you walk over to the spot you’re supposed to meet Klaus at, and I’ll follow you through the trees.” I told her.
“Okay,” She whispered. She kissed Stefan, which made Damon really uncomfortable, and then we were on our way. I just hope this plan works.
Elena walked some ways into the graveyard, until she came to a clearing surrounded with trees.
“Elena,” I heard a familiar soft, husky voice mutter. His voice.
“K-k-Klaus,” Elena muttered.
“I see you’ve held up your end of the deal,” Klaus grinned. His back was facing me, and I could see his new short haircut. I liked it better long.
“And I trust that you’ll hold up your end?” Elena asked.
“Of course. That is if they don’t try and kill me,” Klaus laughed.
“I-I don’t think they will,” Elena murmured.
“And why is that?” Klaus asked.
“They would expect you to leave Mystic Falls. They won’t hurt you if you leave.” Elena whispered. Her voice was slowly growing softer. I got the signal from Bonnie, and stepped out of the trees.
“So nice of you to join us, Aria.” Klaus said, turning his attention to me.
“I would say the same, but I’m kind of repulsed by the idea of seeing you,” I grimaced.
“I see you’ve cut your hair.” He muttered, looking at my dark hair, falling just over my shoulders.
“I see you’ve cut your hair.” I commented.
“I had to stick with the times. Most men these days don’t really have long hair.” Klaus smiled.
“I liked it better long.” I commented.
“Did you? Well I’ll have to take that into consideration, the next time I want to grow it.” Klaus smiled.
“So what do you want with Elena?” I asked, not in the mood for his small talk.
“To remove the curse you placed on me.” He said, and all lightheartedness was removed from his face.
“You realize you could kill yourself, don’t you?” I asked.
“Why would you care. I gave you a chance to live forever with me, and…you ran away.” Klaus grinned again. But I could see through his mask easily.
“You made me a monster.” I muttered.
“I gave you immortality.” He hissed.
“You think I wanted to live forever? Do you think I liked watching every one of my family grow old, have grandchildren, live happy lives, while I was stuck at twenty seven? Do you think I liked watching them all die, while I remained healthy? I hated every minute of it.” I spat at him. He flinched at my harshness, but only stepped closer to me.
“You could have run away with me. You could have raised a family with me,” Klaus muttered, and for a moment I could see what he saw. I could see dark haired children running around Klaus and I. I could see us living happily together…
“I could never have. You were a monster. You cared nothing for other people. All you cared about was sating your bloodlust.” I hissed.
“I loved you,” He whispered.
“No you didn’t.” I growled.
“You still hate me, don’t you?” He asked. We were almost touching now. His face was leaning closer to mine. Damn my short height.
“Yes, I still hate you,” I whispered, even though I knew that was a lie.
“What can I do to show you that I love you still?” He asked, grasping onto my arms. I closed my eyes, trying to choke back the tears that threatened to spill.
“Please, Aria. Tell me what I can do?” He begged.
“You can die, for one thing.” I heard Damon muttered. As I opened my eyes I saw the look of apprehension cross Klaus’s face. But it was too late. Bonnie and I were connected, and as Klaus let me go I started the spell. It only took a second, but as the look of betrayal crossed his face, I couldn’t help but let a few tears fall. He collapsed into my arms as we both went crashing to the ground.
“Did-did it work?” Bonnie asked me.
“Yeah, he’s dead.” I choked out. I sat up and turned Klaus’s head so that it was resting on my lap.
“He’s dead.” I heard Elena mutter. I could hear Elijah’s soft footsteps as he strolled over to me.
“I can’t believe he’s dead.” Elijah muttered, staring at the lifeless face of his brother.
“I killed him,” I whispered, letting the tears fall freely.
“You still love him, don’t you,” Elijah guessed. I nodded my head, choking back another round of sobs.
“He’d thank you for this. At least he can go in peace, knowing that you did what you felt was right.” Elijah draped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him.
“He died thinking I hated him,” I muttered, staring at Klaus’s still figure. Elijah kept quiet, not knowing what else to say.
“Elijah, did he-did Klaus ever talk about me?” I asked.
“Every day. He would sit in his room for hours staring at the picture he had of you,” Elijah muttered.
“Do you think he still has the picture?” I asked, wondering what picture it could have been.
“I know he still has it. He never goes’ anywhere without it.” Elijah muttered. He searched Klaus’s pockets for a second, then pulled out an old piece of parchment.
“He still has this?” I asked I amazement. This was a picture he had painted of me. Back then we didn’t have cameras and fancy gadgets. Klaus was the best painter in our kingdom.
“He loved telling me about you laughing as he painted it, and how he stared at you in amazement.” Elijah said. He glanced down at the picture of me laughing. That was the day Klaus has asked me to marry him. My last night as a human…
Then suddenly I was pulled out of the memory as I felt to arms grasp my face. I looked down to see Klaus staring at me with anger in his eyes.
“He’s still alive!” I heard Elena cry. I tried moving, but something held me there. Something not physical.
