“Um, is it suppose to glow?” I asked in shock but no one answered. Ive never heard anyone mention that the mark either glows or sits like a damn vine-like crown. I rubbed at it, making sure it was real. Yep, its still there. “Im a human, how is this even possible?” I asked, to anyone who could answer. Everyone shook there heads, “There must be a mistake” Kace said, looking at Blaise, he agreed, “She must have been in the way from someone else, maybe Celeste?”
I scoffed, “Way to boost my confidence brothers” they ignored my comment and kept talking amongst themselves, “Mum, please tell me theres a way to get rod of it? Or pass it on to a Fae?” I urged. She was just shaking her head with tears streaming down her cheeks, her hand covering her mouth. Theres no way I can compete in a trial filled with Fae who have abilities I cant even comprehend or defend from. Ive learnt basic self defence with the witches but, thats nothing to fight off with in a trial for a crown. Oh gods, “They’re gonna kill me” I gulped out. My mum jumped and pulled me into her arms, “we will find a way, I promise we will. You won’t die my love” she whispered in my ear. I couldn’t help but let the fear grip me, my breathing becoming heavy, I was about to have a panic attack. My dad sculled down the whole bottle of whisky before joining in the hug that encased me. I could hear my brothers discussing what to do. They couldn’t do anything about it. I cant run, I cant hide, no matter how hard I begged not even the witches could change it. I wasn’t even worthy to be chosen, I had no skills, no power, no purpose like the Fae. I had nothing and was nothing but a human.
I pulled away from my parents, “I need to clear my head” I said as I walked up the stairs and back to my room. Blaise spoke to me mind to mind using his seer powers, I’ll talk to the order tomorrow and see how to undo this Evie. For now lay-low, please. I just nodded my head in response, hoping he could see it.
I sat at my window sill and looked out at the moon that was pure as snow, with only a handful of stars glowing in a slight mist. It was one thing to fight as a human in a trial filled with birth right Faes crowns. But it was worst that I would be competing with and against my brother. Not everyone makes it out alive. As a human, I would be number one target too. How could I even be chosen, I had nothing to offer as a ruler, as a Queen, would they like me to sign there shoes? Because thats the only thing I could possibly do. I wasn’t a ruler and I wasn’t a fighter. If anything I had compassion and understanding only, which most times gained me trouble. Thats not something I can bring to a table to a whole city of light.
The tree outside my window moved slightly in the corner of my eye, I looked at it and could see a shadowy figure standing next to it, I didn’t know what to do, so I stared back at it, watching. was it watching me? Unease settled in me, i looked at the window and caught my reflection of the mark on my forehead that is still glowing, my green and blue eyes seemed to glow with it. I jumped away from the window and closed my blinds. I jumped into bed and let the sleep take me away from this bad dream I was most likely having.

“NO” someone shouted from behind me. I was holding a sword in one hand and a silver dagger in the other. I looked behind and a tall, broad, blurry figure was running towards me. A dark, bristled half hand grabbed onto my wrist with the sword, I swung my dagger towards it, try to cut free from it, but a sharp pain rippled through me. I screamed and dropped down to my knees, trying to break free from this dark hold. I looked up meeting hollowed out eyes and pale crackling skin, the mouth opening wider than it should, hissing at me. I sliced my dagger along the bottom, aiming for its legs. Oil black blood, spilled my hands and the creature squealed, letting go of my hand. I used the sworded hand to slice down on the pale skinned neck that you could see just under its black hollowed cloak. Just as I finished the final blow, strong scarred hands grabbed me from behind. I turned quickly placing my dagger up at its neck. I halted at the orange eyes that met mine. “Careful sugar” he smirked at me, the most gorgeous looking man I have ever seen, his eyes burning into my soul and his lips, oh gods they were just calling out to me to kiss them, lick them. As if he knew what I was thinking, he kissed me deep yet soft, his lips gliding against mine like soft silky roses on a bed of milky water. He pulled my waist against his and I gasped at the hardness smacking straight into me. “Don’t go to far, I need you to stay alive” he tapped on my chest where a necklace with a circled gemstone, wrapped in silver steel like strings binding it, a shimmering mist of all sorts of colours gliding in it. He grabbed my chin to look back at him, his smile meeting his eyes, “for calmer seas” he said before he licked my lips, kissed my cheek and stepped back into the dark field of battle that awaited us.

I jolted from my sleep, beads of sweet dripping over my body. This was the third time I’ve had a dream of this man and this world that I’ve never even been to, the first time was when I was sixteen and slept over at Celestes for her birthday, the second time was much more awkward, when I was seventeen and stayed over with my now Ex-Boyfriend Tren, lets just say he wasn’t happy I had a dream about another man straight after we had s*x, to be fair I didn’t have much control over it. A warm sensation with a throb was pulsating through my lower s*x, I was turned on again by this stranger. The man was outright sexy and alluring, I could still feel his touch against my hips. My body ached and was urging me to go back to sleep and relive that small dream, with that hot kiss we shared.
My phone started ringing and I jumped at the sound. Celeste was calling me, she was like a s*x radar honestly. I picked up her call and she blasted in my ear, “Were going out tonight” I grunted at her words, we had almost been caught last night, plus Blaise wanted me to stay on the low since the chosen mark appeared on my damn forehead. “I cant tonight Celeste, I have some things to deal with” she scoffed “Oh please, like writing your name on some more shoes?”
I didn’t even know how to respond to that, so I just told her the truth, “Celi, last night Kace had been chosen for the New Moon Crowning” there was silence on the phone and I double checked she was still connected, she eventually responded, “He is a great fighter Evie, plus he has the looks to woe over any other Fae females in the trials” I laughed at her soothing words, touching my forehead gently before continuing, “thats not the only thing” my voice was stuck in my throat, I couldn’t get it out, she waited for me patiently, I sighed, “Ive been chosen too” I winced at my own words. “You, you cant be serious, I mean you would be a great ruler but thats if you survive it, even with the best training, you-” She couldn’t finish her sentence but I knew what she was saying and she was right, like always. It wasn’t an honour for me, it was a death sentence. “Theres nothing I can do is there” I asked, if anyone knew she would. There was a long pause and small exhale, “no, once your chosen thats it Evie, im so sorry”
I couldn’t help the tears that started rising up, making my eyes hot and heavy. I would have to compete. Ill make sure Kace wins, ill do everything I possibly can to make him come out of it alive. Than ill meet my death soon after.
“If theres one thing you can do though before competing, its to have a night out at Nightclub Dawns to remember with your dearest friend” she pleaded softly, I rolled my eyes as I said “nope” and I could feel her disappointment through the phone. I knew what was to come next from her. “Oh please Evie, its just to the nightclub Dawns. I really need a distraction from last night, with Paxton who hasn’t stopped calling me and now the news of my best friend having to compete against filthy Faes” she whined. “Your a Fae Celi” I laughed, “And a filthy one I am” she slyed through the phone. A small smile cam up on my lips.
I stared at my wall, contemplating saying no again, but she was right, I could die very soon and have just spent the last days in a miserable mess. Plus I wanted to tell her about this dream of mine with this mystery man. “Kace won’t let. He was the one my flipflop hit in the head last night and with me now walking around with the chosen mark on my forehead. He won’t risk me being a target for anyone” she laughed so loud my ear drum nearly fell out my ear, “I’ll ask Kace for you, he can never say no to me” she giggled lightly. It was true, he always had a soft spot for her.
I went to hang up the phone but Celeste called out my name, “Yes?” I asked, “stop writing your name on your things” I heard her laugh before she hung up the phone.
