Anastasia.
I look across at Levi. There is no way in heaven or earth I am going to accept to be his mate. The doctor is just talking nonsense. My baby is going to be just fine.
"What effects would it have on the child". Levi asks.
"They are mainly emotional and psychological. The pup might grow up wolfless, or worse, unable to control his wolf". The doctor replies.
"What does that have to do with us?" I ask, not getting the point he is trying to make.
"When mates are away from each other, their bond suffers. Not just the bond, everything connected to the bond suffers." The doctor says.
It makes more sense now. The bond is indeed a fragile thing.
I had already vowed not to be Levi's mate. That isn't going to change. Not even because of my child.
When the doctor is done with all his examinations, he heads out.
The nurse comes out of where she had been hiding and sits across me.
Great! Now more people know that Levi and I are fated mates.
I stretch and return to my room to sleep.
As I crawl under the warm cover, I hear someone walk into my room. I only have to guess who it is.
"We have to talk about what the doctor just said, Anastasia". He says, perching himself by my dresser.
I peek at him from beneath the safety of the blanket.
"My ears are not blocked, dummy. Say whatever you need to say and get out". I say, annoyed.
He moves so fast and pins my neck down without me realizing it. He holds me in a chokehold and I gasp for breath.
"You may be carrying my child, but you should be warned that that is the only reason that you are still alive. You better be careful how you run that little mouth of yours around me". He growls in my ear.
"Is that a threat?" I manage to squeeze out.
"I don't do threats". He growls.
I try to gulp but his grip on my neck is way too tight.
He finally lets go when my breath starts to give way. I draw in a large breath. My breathing is ragged. He almost killed me!
I get up and start packing my things.
"What the hell are you doing?" He asks, hands on hips.
"What does it look like? I'm getting the hell away from you before you kill me and my baby". I yell at him.
"Our baby. And, you are not going anywhere. We have an agreement". He warns.
I stop moving. My father would not accept me back knowing that I am violating our agreement.
"Well, f**k the agreement!" I yell at him again.
He moves in quick strides and yanks my bag out of my hands and tosses it across the room. The look in his eyes makes me think twice about my actions.
I say nothing.
"Go and have something to eat. Now!" He yells as I don't move.
I move as fast as my feet can carry me.
I see the nurse at the bottom of the stairs. Her eyes are lowered. Good! If she so much as tries to say anything to me about whatever she heard, I will not hesitate to rip her head off.
She leads me to the table where steaming dishes are waiting for me. Most of them contain meat. Meat that looks barely cooked.
I sit down to eat. I can feel my appetite growing.
I wash my hands and pick up the heavy pound of steak and eat it.
It still has some fresh blood in it. I lick my fingers. The nurse averts her gaze.
Levi comes to the table and sits across me.
"I'm glad you finally have an appetite". He says as he reaches for the apple sauce.
"Then don't try to ruin it". I mutter as I tear out the flesh with my canines.
He watches me quietly. When he watches me like this, he makes me wonder what he is thinking.
"I want to take you somewhere". He says.
I look up from my animalistic eating.
"I am not going anywhere with you, Crosswalk. Being in your house is punishment enough". I mutter with a mouth full of food.
He narrows his eyes at me.
The nurse mutters something and leaves us alone.
I whimper. The nurse was the only thing standing between me and his temper.
"Say that again and I will cut off your tongue". He says and picks up his table knife.
He is definitely not bluffing.
"I just don't want to go out. I feel a bit sick". I change my approach.
His gaze softens slightly.
"You have not even asked me where we are going". He says.
I stop my eating.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"To the waterfall. I heard that swimming is a good exercise for pregnant wolves". He says.
I roll my eyes. I even thought he wanted to take me on a date, not like I would have accepted anyway.
"Swim? I can swim in the bathtub". I say and stuff more meat into my mouth.
"Must you contest everything I say?" He asks, gentle.
I avoid meeting his gaze.
"I don't want to go anywhere with you. You almost killed me earlier". I say, trying to find another excuse.
"But, I didn't". He counters.
The freaking guy won't just give up.
"Is the nurse coming?" I ask.
He toys with his food.
"No, darling. It's just me and you". He says slowly in a silky voice.
I stiffen. It suddenly feels so hard to swallow the food in my mouth.
My appetite slowly fades.
"I don't have what to wear". I mutter.
He smiles. He does have a nice smile, and his canines jut out handsomely at the sides.
"Don't worry. I have that covered". He says and leaves the table.
He leaves me wondering exactly what he means by that.
After eating, I go up to have a shower. I stand in front of the mirror in my panties and bra and stare at my reflection. The bulge is slightly bigger, but still barely visible.
The nurse is waiting for me by the bathroom door as if I am now too fragile to bathe myself. Everyday, I look thinner.
My collar bone keeps jutting out more. All I can be wearing now is thick sweaters and baggy pants.
Levi pokes in at the door. I watch him through the mirror. He searches the room until his eyes rest on mine through the mirror.
I want to cover my body. I look hideous. He must be wondering how I turned from the luscious and full woman to what I now look like.
My hands hug my sides instinctively.
He walks further into the room. I do not realize there are tears in my eyes until my gaze becomes blurry. He wipes it away with the thumb of his right hand.
Then, without thinking, I let him hug me.
When we part, I refuse to meet his gaze. I only allowed myself a moment of weakness. That is all that was.
Then he tosses a pair of brand new bikinis on the bed.
"This is what I want you to wear".
