The Unexpected Guest

Naomi’s POV I barely got any sleep last night. Vincent didnt bother sleeping in the same room as me. Honestly, I wasn’t too surprised by Vincent’s actions. Our marriage always seemed like a contract to begin with, even though it isnt. I picked up my phone from the bed stand and saw 2 missed calls from Mia. Just as I was about to call again, her call suddenly entered and I picked it before the second ring. “Where have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you.” I said clearly worried “Im so sorry I got caught up with lectures and by the time I got back to my apartment I was so tired.” “Thank God you’re fine.” I said sounding relived. “Sis, whats the problem you don’t sound fine?” She asked concerned. I didn’t even know when the tears came out all I could find myself doing was crying. Vincent is cheating on me,” I said, grabbing a tissue to wipe my tears. “What?” “I caught him yesterday.” Mia went silent. “With another woman?” “Yes.” I sniffed and wiped my face again. “She was in our bedroom, Mia. Our bedroom.” “Oh my God, Naomi.” “I wanted to leave.” “Then leave him.” “I can’t.” “Why not?” I sighed. “You know why.” “Because of me?” I didn’t answer. “Naomi, you can’t keep staying in that marriage because of me.” “I don’t have a choice.” “You do.” “No, I don’t.” I sat back against the headboard. “If I leave Vincent, how am I supposed to take care of you? How will you finish school?” “I’ll figure it out.” “You say that now, but you don’t know how hard things will become.” There was a short silence. “I just hate that you’re unhappy,” Mia finally said. I looked down at my hands. “I thought I could handle it.” “Handle what?” “The marriage. The loneliness. Everything.” My voice cracked. “But I never thought he’d actually do this.” “I know.” “I keep wondering what I did wrong.” “You did nothing wrong.” “Then why wasn’t I enough?” Mia didn’t answer immediately. I heard her take a deep breath. “Naomi, don’t blame yourself for his choices.” I wiped another tear from my cheek. “I just feel stupid.” “You’re not stupid.” “I married a man I didn’t love because I thought I was protecting us. And now look where I am.” “You were trying to help me.” “I know.” “And I’ll never forget that.” I smiled sadly. “You better not.” She laughed softly. For the first time since yesterday, I felt a little lighter. “I love you, sis.” “I love you too.” I was about to say something when I heard a knock on my bedroom door. I quickly wiped my face. “Mia, someone is at my door.” “Who?” “I don’t know.” “Okay. Call me later.” “I will.” I ended the call and looked toward the door. Another knock followed. “Mrs. Sterling?” It was one of the maids. I stood up and opened the door. “Good morning.” “Good morning, ma’am. Mr. Sterling asked me to tell you that he wants to see you downstairs.” I frowned. “Now?” “Yes, ma’am.” I nodded. “Tell him I’ll be down shortly.” She left. I closed the door and looked at myself in the mirror. I wasn’t ready to face Vincent again. But whatever he wanted to say, I was going to hear it. I grabbed my robe and walked down the stairs. Vincent was already dressed and getting ready to leave for work. “What’s the problem?” I asked, giving him a side eye. He sighed. “Chase Harrison is going to be staying with us for a while. He’s coming tonight.” “Harrison?” The name sounded familiar. I used to work for his father as a housekeeper before Vincent married me. I never met Chase, though. He was still studying abroad at the time. “Why would he be staying with us?” “His father got into some trouble, and all their properties and assets are being seized.” I frowned. “Yeah, sure, whatever. Would that be all?” “Yes.” I didn’t even give him time to say anything else. I turned around and headed back upstairs. A few minutes later, when I was sure he had left, I came back downstairs to have breakfast. I had barely taken a few bites when the front door suddenly opened. Victoria barged in. “Has my father gone to work?” she asked rudely. I didn’t respond. She walked closer to me. “Naomi, you seem to have no respect for the people who own you.” I slowly looked up at her. Victoria was Vincent’s daughter, and we were around the same age. She had hated me from the moment Vincent married me. She hated me so much that she eventually stopped living with us, and Vincent bought her a new house. I placed my fork down. “You do not get to speak to me like that. I am your father’s wife.” She laughed. “Yeah. Says the gold digger.” I stared at her. I had spent three years listening to her insults. But after everything that happened yesterday, I had no patience left. Before I could think twice, I stood up and slapped her across the face. Victoria’s eyes widened. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then she slowly turned back to me, her hand covering her cheek. “You just slapped me?” I stared at her. “Maybe now you’ll learn to watch your mouth.” Her expression hardened. “You’re going to regret that.” She grabbed her phone and stormed toward the door. I picked up my fork again. Honestly, I was too tired to care. finished my breakfast and went straight to my room. I basically spent the whole day there, reading novels and scrolling through social media. Around evening time, I decided to go downstairs to watch TV when I saw the gates opening and a car entering the compound. I went outside to check who it was, and that was when I saw a tall, brown-skinned man with incredible hair. He looked like he was in his early thirties, especially compared to Vincent, who was pushing sixty. “Who are you?” I asked, walking over to him. “I’m Chase. Uncle Vincent said it was okay if I stayed here for a while,” he replied as he took his suitcase out of the trunk. Then it all started to make sense. “Oh.” I didn’t bother greeting him. I didn’t want to associate with anyone from Vincent’s side of the family again. I had already turned to leave when I heard his voice behind me. “You really don’t like me, do you?” I stopped and looked back at him. “I don’t know you well enough to like or dislike you.” He smiled slightly. “Fair enough.” I turned around again. “But you’re making it very easy to dislike you.” I walked away before he could respond. Behind me, I heard him laugh. Somehow, I had a feeling Chase Harrison wasn’t going to be as easy to ignore as I wanted him to be.
