Some guys have all the luck. Take Sniper for instance. One day the guy is a Jap-loving traitor, according to Crandall, and the next day he’s a Silver Star Corporal and a hero. But that’s the way it goes out here. One day we’re climbing into Higgins boats, all spiffy and clean in our crisp new jungle uniforms, thinking patriotic thoughts and expecting to have this mess cleaned up in two days and the next day we’re watching while the Navy sissies turn tail and run from a few Jap ships, leaving us stranded here on Guadalcanal. A month later none of us have an extra ounce of body fat, thirty percent are down with malaria or dysentery and all of us look like a bunch of pirates that came ashore hunting for buried treasure.
