For the first time since her failed suicide attempt, Hualing had gone out for a walk on the Promenade, a place that had been so important in her limited life experience in New York. Laura Cohen had tried to dissuade her from exposing herself to such bad memories with the argument that she could take the girl out herself without problems, but Hualing had insisted on doing so to overcome her fears and thus regain control of her life.
