CHAPTER 1: THE DIVORCE

578 Words
The rain fell heavily against the glass windows, blurring the city lights into streaks of cold gold. Linh sat quietly at the dining table, her fingers resting on the edge of a porcelain cup that had long gone cold. Three years. Three years of marriage, and this was how it ended. The door opened. She didn’t need to turn around to know it was him. His footsteps were steady, indifferent—just like always. “Sign it.” A stack of papers landed in front of her. No greeting. No explanation. Just two words. Linh lowered her eyes. Divorce Agreement. Her lips curled into a faint smile, though there was no warmth in it. “So… this is my anniversary gift?” He didn’t respond immediately. When he did, his voice was calm, almost bored. “You should know this was inevitable.” Inevitable. Such a simple word to erase three years. Linh finally looked up at him. Her husband. The man she once thought she could warm. Nguyen Khang stood tall, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression cold and distant. As if she were nothing more than a stranger. No. Worse than a stranger. At least strangers received politeness. “You’re in a hurry,” she said softly. “Is she waiting?” For the first time, his brows moved slightly. “You don’t need to concern yourself with that.” That meant yes. Of course it did. Linh let out a quiet breath. Somewhere deep inside, something fragile finally shattered completely. “I see.” She picked up the pen. No hesitation. No tears. That… made him pause. “You’re agreeing that easily?” Linh looked at him again, this time with a calmness he had never seen before. “Isn’t this what you wanted?” He didn’t answer. Because it was. From the beginning, this marriage had never been about love. It was an arrangement. A deal between families. And she… had been the only fool who tried to turn it into something real. The pen touched the paper. Her signature flowed smoothly across the line. Linh. Simple. Decisive. Final. She pushed the papers back toward him. “It’s done.” For a moment, silence filled the room. Then— “Good.” Just one word. Sharp enough to cut. Khang picked up the documents without another glance at her. “Pack your things. You’ll leave tonight.” Linh almost laughed. “Don’t worry. I won’t stay where I’m not wanted.” She stood up slowly. For the first time in three years, she walked past him… without stopping. Without looking back. But right before she reached the door, she paused. “One more thing.” Khang frowned slightly. “What?” Linh turned her head just enough for him to see the faint smile on her lips. “Don’t regret it.” Then she left. The door closed behind her with a soft click. And for some reason— The house suddenly felt… empty. Outside, the rain poured harder. Linh stepped into the darkness, her expression completely different now. Cold. Sharp. Unrecognizable. A black car slowly stopped in front of her. The driver rushed out, bowing his head. “Miss, the family has been waiting for your return.” Linh glanced back at the house one last time. Her eyes were calm. “No need to wait anymore.” She opened the car door. “It’s time I go home.”
