Chapter 9 - First Steps

Mira stood in front of the closet for several minutes. Rows of soft fabrics hung neatly inside, shimmering slightly in the gentle lighting of the room. Silks and chiffons brushed together whenever the ship shifted, the movement making the garments look almost alive. She ran her fingers across a few of them. Smooth. Light. Far more elegant than anything she usually wore back home. “Well,” she muttered quietly, “if I’m going to be stuck on an alien spaceship, I might as well look the part.” Her eyes drifted across the rack until one garment caught her attention. A deep purple dress hung near the middle. It fell to about knee length, made from a flowing silk-like fabric that shifted beautifully in the light. The sleeves were loose and airy, draping softly from the shoulders and moving like gentle waves whenever she lifted it from the rack. Mira held it up in front of herself. “…Okay,” she said softly. “I like this one.” She carried the dress into the hygiene chamber. The misting shower activated with a soft glow as she stepped inside, warm vapor drifting around her. The gentle spray felt almost weightless compared to the showers she was used to. Within moments, the strange alien system had cleaned and dried her completely. “Honestly,” she murmured, stepping out, “Earth needs to get these.” After dressing in the purple garment, Mira paused in front of the reflective surface above the basin. The dress fit her surprisingly well. The flowing sleeves brushed softly against her arms, and the silky fabric moved lightly around her knees when she shifted. For a moment, she almost forgot where she was. Then her eyes dropped to the collar around her neck. Reality returned quickly. “…Right,” she whispered. She took a steady breath and stepped back into the bedroom. The room was still empty. The enormous bed had already been made somehow, the blankets smooth and perfectly arranged. Mira walked slowly toward the door. Her hand hovered near the control panel beside it. “This is it,” she muttered to herself. Her stomach fluttered nervously. She had barely spoken to the aliens who had bought her. And now she was about to wander through their ship. “Okay,” she whispered. “Just… don’t panic.” She pressed the panel. The door slid open with a soft mechanical sound. The corridor beyond stretched out in both directions, softly lit with glowing lines running along the walls and floor. The hum of the ship was louder here, vibrating faintly beneath her feet. Mira stepped out cautiously. The door slid closed behind her. “Well,” she murmured quietly. “No turning back now.” She began walking slowly down the corridor, glancing around at everything as she moved. The ship was enormous. Larger than she had realized the night before. Doorways lined the hallway at intervals, some closed, others revealing glimpses of strange alien equipment or glowing control panels. She passed the room she remembered from earlier—the command area with floating displays and softly glowing holographic charts. Everything looked so advanced. So completely beyond anything she had ever seen. Mira turned another corner carefully. And almost walked straight into someone. She gasped and stepped back quickly. A large figure stood in the hallway. One of the aliens. For a split second, panic flared in her chest. Then she recognized him. Vael. The tall alien’s eyes widened slightly when he saw her. Then his expression brightened noticeably. “Well,” he said, clearly pleased. “You’re awake.” Mira blinked. “Uh… yeah.” Vael straightened from where he had been leaning against the wall, looking her over briefly before returning his attention to her face. “The garment suits you.” She glanced down at the purple dress. “Oh.” A faint blush crept across her face. “Thanks… I guess.” Vael seemed genuinely delighted to see her. “I was beginning to wonder when you would emerge.” “You expected me to just wander around?” “It seemed likely.” Mira crossed her arms lightly. “I got curious.” “That is good.” She studied him carefully. “You seem… excited.” Vael tilted his head slightly. “Seeing you walking freely through the ship is encouraging.” “Encouraging?” “Yes.” He gestured lightly down the corridor. “It means you are beginning to adapt.” Mira exhaled slowly. “Adapt might be a strong word.” Vael chuckled softly. “Perhaps.” She shifted her weight slightly, still a little nervous standing alone in the hallway with him. “So…” she said awkwardly. “Where is everyone?” Vael motioned down the corridor. “Most of the crew are in the command room.” He paused before adding with a small smile, “They will also be pleased to see you.” Mira swallowed nervously. “That’s… comforting.” Vael gestured again. “Would you like a tour of the ship?” She hesitated. Then slowly nodded. “…Yeah.” Vael’s expression brightened again. “Excellent.” And with that, Mira’s first real day aboard the alien ship truly began.
