Maya's POV
The words hung between them, fragile and sharp.
"Because you're the only one who might say yes."
Maya felt her back against the doorframe. She hadn't retreated; he had simply closed the distance until escape became unnecessary. Or impossible.
Adrian waited an arm's length away. Close enough to touch. Far enough to let her choose. The firelight carved shadows across his face, revealing something she hadn't expected—uncertainty. The heir to everything, uncertain of her.
"That's not fair," she whispered.
"No." His voice was rough. "It's not reasonable. It's not anything you should agree with."
"Then why ask?"
He smiled. Not polished. Not performed. Something older. "Because I don't know how to want something without calculating its value. And with you—the calculation fails."
Maya exhaled. The future she had mapped—scholarship, invisibility, survival—warped in the heat between them.
"One condition," she said.
Adrian smiled
"You don't lie to me. Not about this. Not about what we're risking."
"I don't lie," he said. "I withhold. I protect information until it's useful. But I don't lie."
Maya studied him. The architecture of his control. The loneliness she had named.
"Then I'll stay," she said. "Tonight. Not forever. Just—long enough to understand what I'm choosing."
Adrian's hand found hers. Interlaced. Held.
"Tonight," he agreed.
The fire burned lower. Outside, the gates stood open. Inside, something new began—neither of them knowing its name, both finally choosing to learn.
