Maya's POV
I hated how every step I took seemed to echo across the quad. Every whisper, every sidelong glance, made my stomach tighten.
It wasn’t fair—I hadn’t done anything wrong.
Sitting in that seat wasn’t a crime. Yet somehow, I had painted a target on my back.
I adjusted my bag, trying to appear casual as I moved toward the library. The sun glinted off the fountain, and for a moment, I thought I saw movement in the reflection—dark eyes tracking me. No. Stop imagining things.
But the feeling didn’t leave.
A group of students passed too close, muttering under their breath. I clenched my notebook, pretending I hadn’t heard them. One of the taller girls, perfectly groomed with an icy smirk, leaned in slightly.
"Scholarship girl," she hissed. "Trying to play with the big leagues?"
I froze, my hands tightening around my bag strap. I considered ignoring her. Maybe if I didn’t react, she’d back off.
But something inside me refused to cower. I squared my shoulders and met her eyes for a fraction of a second. Not fear. Not submission. Only defiance.
A shadow fell across the group. My heart skipped. I glanced up.
Adrian Cole.
Even standing at a distance, he was impossible to ignore. Calm. Controlled. Every movement is deliberate. His presence swallowed the air around him. The whispers stopped the instant he appeared. Students glanced nervously at one another, unsure what to do.
He didn’t speak. He didn’t even move closer at first. He simply stood there, watching. And I realized—with a jolt—that he was watching me.
I looked away quickly, pretending to adjust my bag, hoping he wouldn’t notice how fast my heart was racing.

She froze when I arrived. Just for a second. Enough.
The girl who dared sit in my seat yesterday—she thought she could ignore me.
That she could move through my world unnoticed. I couldn’t let that happen. Not yet.
I stepped forward subtly, my shadow stretching over the group surrounding her. They faltered instinctively, the bravado in their movements dying in an instant. That’s all it took.
My gaze returned to her. She was defiant, yes. Bold, perhaps even reckless. But she was human. Fragile. And that… intrigued me
Every movement of hers was a signal. A challenge. A question. And I intended to answer it, on my terms.
I didn’t speak. Not yet. Let her feel the tension. Let her wonder how much I had noticed, how much I cared.

I swallowed hard, forcing my legs to move. I needed the library. Privacy. Silence. Anything but this heat of attention.
He followed—silent, almost invisible, yet unmistakable. I could feel the air shift when he passed. Students moved aside instinctively, and for a moment, I felt trapped between curiosity and fear.
I ducked inside the library and slipped into a corner. I could breathe again, barely. My notebook felt heavier in my hands, my fingers trembling as I tried to organize my notes
Someone came too close again. A boy whispered something rude, and I flinched. My composure cracked slightly, just a fraction. I hoped no one noticed.
And then, I felt it—again. His presence. Watching. Waiting.
I bit my lip. Why is he like this?

She glanced up. Just for a second. Recognition. Surprise. And maybe something else—curiosity, challenge.
Good
I let her think she was invisible. Let her think she could navigate this world without interference. Not for long. Soon, she’d learn that crossing me had consequences, and those consequences could be intoxicating
I watched as she sank back into her notebook, pretending to focus. Every muscle in her body screamed awareness. Awareness that I was there. Awareness that she could not escape me.
Somewhere beneath the calm, the defiance, the fearless attitude, I recognized something I hadn’t felt in years: the need to protect. Not from everyone. Not from life. But from anyone who dared touch her, challenge her, belittle her.
Because she was mine—at least in my mind. And that was enough… for now.

I pretended to write notes, but I wasn’t listening to the lecture. My eyes kept flicking toward him. The calm, untouchable Adrian Cole. The boy everyone feared, everyone whispered about.
And yet, here he was, watching me. Silent. Still. But terrifying.
I had thought I could survive unnoticed. I had thought I could walk through this campus like a shadow.
I was wrong.
Because now… I was caught.
and so was he
