SHADOW OF THE PAST

Maya’s POV The courtyard was still buzzing from Serena’s dramatic announcement when I tried to slip away, my notebook clutched tightly against my chest. My heart hadn’t yet settled from the audacity of her entrance, the whispers that followed, and the way all eyes had suddenly seemed to focus on me. I headed toward the library, weaving carefully between students, hoping for a moment of peace. But halfway there, I felt a subtle shift—a disturbance in the air. Heads turned, whispers quickened, and a few students nudged each other, their eyes wide with curiosity. And then I saw him. Tall, confident, and impossibly calm, he stepped into the courtyard as though he owned it. His gaze swept over the crowd and then landed on me, lingering just long enough to make my chest tighten. Something about him felt familiar, though I couldn’t place it. And then he looked at Adrian. That tilt of his head, the faint smirk tugging at his lips—there was history here. The tension between them was palpable, invisible yet almost painful to sense. I realized with a sudden jolt: I had stumbled straight into a storm I didn’t even know existed. ****** Adrian’s POV Lucas The name alone set my muscles taut. I had hoped this semester would pass without him appearing. But here he was—calm, poised, and dangerous in the way only someone who had always been my rival could be. He paused across the courtyard, scanning the crowd. And then his eyes found her—Maya. My chest tightened, that sharp coil of possessiveness flaring instantly. She was mine. And Lucas’s very presence threatened that. I didn’t step forward immediately. I let him linger, letting the air between us thicken. My jaw tightened. My hands flexed slightly at my sides, not moving toward her, but projecting that quiet tension that said: This is my space. Step carefully. Lucas’s smirk widened faintly. Almost casual. But I could read the challenge behind it. He knew me. knew exactly who I was. And he had always known how to provoke me without even trying. ****** Maya’s POV Lucas’s steps were deliberate, measured, each one drawing attention. Students whispered and craned their necks, but I felt like I was in a bubble, caught between him and Adrian. "So this is the girl Adrian’s been protecting so fiercely?" Lucas’s voice was smooth, deliberate, just loud enough for nearby students to hear. I gripped my notebook tighter. "And you are?" My tone was steady, though my heart raced. "Lucas Hart," he replied, glancing briefly at Adrian before returning his gaze to me. "Interesting… seems I’ve arrived just in time to see the untouchable Adrian Cole flustered." Flustered? My eyes darted to Adrian. He hadn’t spoken a word, hadn’t moved toward Lucas—but the tension in his posture, the slight narrowing of his eyes, the way he subtly shifted closer to me without drawing attention… it spoke volumes. Lucas wasn’t just commenting on Adrian. He was teasing him. Testing him. And I felt it, the current of rivalry that suddenly surrounded us. ****** Adrian’s POV Lucas had always known exactly which buttons to push. That faint smirk, the casual tone, the implication that I cared too much… all deliberate. I took a careful step toward Maya, just enough for my presence to surround her. Protective, possessive, measured. Not a gesture of aggression, but a silent declaration: "she's off limits". "She’s off-limits," I said, my voice low, steady, deliberate. Enough for Lucas to hear, enough for anyone paying attention to understand the stakes. Lucas tilted his head, smirk widening slightly. "Is she, though? Interesting… how much you care." I didn't’ respond immediately. Let the silence stretch. Let him feel the weight of history, the decades of rivalry condensed into this one tense moment. Let him see that stepping into my world wasn’t as easy as he thought. Maya’s POV The courtyard had gone silent. Students whispered behind cupped hands, phones discreetly recording. My chest tightened as I realized what I was witnessing. Lucas, confident and teasing; Adrian, protective and tense; and me… caught squarely in the middle. Lucas glanced back at Adrian briefly before turning his attention to me. "She’s not just anyone," he said casually, as though confirming something to himself as much as to Adrian. I felt a shiver run down my spine. He wasn’t just provoking Adrian; he was testing the boundaries, assessing me. And I realized, with a mixture of awe and unease, that I had just walked into a battle that had started long before I arrived. ****** Adrian’s POV I could feel the history between Lucas and me pressing down, but more than that, I felt something new—protection, possessiveness, determination. Lucas had returned, fully aware of our past, fully aware of what I had built in my life—what I would not allow to be taken from me. And I would not act rashly, but I would act when the time was right. Maya noticed the subtle shifts, the tension between us, and I made sure she felt it—not fear, but awareness. Awareness that she was in my world now, and that I would never let anyone, past rival or not, claim what belonged to me. The game had changed. The stakes were higher. And one truth remained: I never lost, and I would never lose her.
