MAYA'S Pov
The courtyard buzzed with chatter, laughter, and the faint hum of campus gossip. I had hoped for a quiet moment, but that was impossible here. Not when he was around
I was halfway across the quad when a sudden gleam caught my eye. A sleek black car pulled up at the main entrance. Not just any car—a luxury sedan, spotless, almost intimidating in its elegance. Heads turned. Whispers followed.
And Then she stepped out
Serena
Every inch of her screamed wealth, power, and confidence. Designer shoes, flawless makeup, a smile that could freeze blood. And the way she carried herself—like the entire campus belonged to her—made me flinch.
She sauntered across the courtyard, stopping in front of everyone. And then, with a voice loud enough for every student nearby, she said:
"Hello, everyone. I’m Serena Cole—Adrian’s fiancée."
The courtyard fell silent. Students froze, whispers caught in their throats. Eyes widened, jaws dropped.
My chest tightened. My hand instinctively gripped my notebook. Fiancée? Did Adrian…?
I stole a glance at him. Adrian Cole, untouchable heir, untamed, the boy everyone whispered about… stood perfectly still. Calm. Controlled. His face is unreadable, but his eyes—oh, his eyes—flickered.
At me
I felt a pang. Confusion, frustration, something unfamiliar. I wasn’t supposed to care. I wasn’t supposed to feel this tight knot in my chest.
Serena’s smile widened, sharp and deliberate. "I just thought I should introduce myself properly," she added, tilting her head in mock sweetness. "I’d hate for anyone to think I don’t notice things that matter."
A ripple of gasps and murmurs passed through the crowd. Students nudged each other, whispering excitedly. The gossip had a new spark, and I was at its center.

Adrian’s POV
She had arrived, just as I suspected, but not quite in the way I had imagined. The luxury car. The public announcement. Every detail is calculated to make an impression. And yet, I hadn’t expected her to wield it so confidently.
Serena. My fiancée. The Cole family’s alliance. Our families’ legacy. And here she was, planting herself in the courtyard like she owned every eye watching.
I saw the looks she threw my way—calculated, possessive, proud. She was proud of me, of what I represented. But she didn’t know what I wanted. Not entirely. And she certainly didn’t know about her greatest rival: the girl standing a few feet away, calm, defiant, fearless, even under the weight of this announcement.
Maya Bennett.
I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She wasn’t shrinking. She wasn’t bowing. Not visibly. That fire in her eyes—it was reckless, dangerous, magnetic. And in that moment, part of me admired her, even as another part of me snapped at the audacity of it.
Serena made her way toward me, heels clicking against the pavement. Every student in the courtyard watched. Some whispered about the fiancée. Others, about Maya. I caught Maya’s subtle reaction—the tight grip on her notebook, her chest rising slightly with controlled breaths.
Good. She needed to feel small… but not too small.
Serena stopped in front of me, tilting her head, smiling in that infuriatingly confident way. "Do you always welcome your fiancée like this?"
I arched an eyebrow. "Always." My tone was clipped, deliberate. Enough to remind her—and everyone watching—that this wasn’t a game I didn’t control.
The whispers erupted again. Students glanced between us, mouths open, eyes wide. Cameras in phones discreetly lifted to capture the moment. Campus gossip would spread in minutes.
I could see Maya’s hands trembling slightly behind me. I didn’t touch her. Not yet. I let the tension work, let her feel the space, the attention, the stakes. She was clever, resourceful, and bold. But boldness could falter. Especially in the shadow of this kind of public display.

Maya’s POV
I exhaled slowly, trying to steady my hands. My gaze darted between Adrian and Serena. Every part of me wanted to flee, to disappear into a corner of the courtyard, anywhere safe. But I couldn’t. Not now.
He was calm, unwavering, even in front of his fiancée. And yet, I could feel him—his presence, his intensity, the way he dominated the space around him. Protective, possessive, watching me even as he maintained his composure.
I swallowed hard. I couldn’t admit it out loud, not even to myself, but part of me felt… exhilarated. That heat, that tension—it made my pulse quicken. I hated that I felt relief when he stood between me and Serena. Hated that I noticed the small glance he stole my way, the subtle tightening of his jaw as he measured her.
Serena’s icy gaze landed on me. I met it, not backing down. Not out loud. But inside… I felt the tension coil tighter in my chest.
The crowd around us whispered. Phones lifted. Gossip spread. And I realized something: this wasn’t just a moment. This was a declaration.
And somehow, without a word, I knew I had stepped into a battle I hadn’t signed up for.

Adrian’s POV
I let the crowd murmur. Let them speculate. Let them whisper.
Maya was mine. Not Serena’s. Not anyone else’s. And I would ensure she knew it, in my way. Calm. Calculated. Possessive.
Serena’s arrival had changed the dynamic, yes. But it hadn’t changed my focus. My attention. My intent.
She was bold. She was fearless. She would be a challenge. And I intended to meet it.
The game was only beginning.
