“You know, I've never really seen Alpha Leo so angry. “ Ghana, the pack healer says as she pours a purple ointment into the cream bottle.
I glance up at her face to see a smile across her face. She was mixing a few poison and ointment together to make a lotion that was supposed to stop the wounds from spreading and supposedly heal the fresh ones.
“He clearly likes you a lot.“ Ghana comments.
She moves over from her position and to the cabinet where the medicines are stacked on the shelves.
Likes me? How could that even be possible?
She moves over from her table of potions and back to me, taking my arm in hers gently.
“When he'd announced to form a truce with your pack, nobody was in support even the elders.“ She smiles, pouring the lotion to the affected areas.
“But Leo does whatever he wants and he's always been like that, you know.”
The lotion was cold against my skin but it didn't hurt.
“Why did he bring me here?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper and weak at the same time.
Ghana pauses for a moment, her hands still as she dabs the cold lotion onto one of my open wounds.
She smiles.
“How much do you know about Alpha Leo?”
The question takes me off guard but I reluctantly shake my head.
“Only what they said in my pack—” I hesitate, swallowing hard as memories flood back. “He’s ruthless and for years he's been at war with my people, killing without mercy.”
Ghana chuckles softly, though it’s tinged with sadness.
“Ruthless, a little yes. But only when it comes to protecting his pack. There’s so much more beyond the stories you might have heard about the Black Wolves.”
She hesitates for a moment, as if deciding whether to share something deeply personal.
Her hand is still dabbing at my wound but this time slower.
“Every member of the Black Wolves was against the truce, no one wanted to share resources or put heads together with your people, not after what happened.”
My eyes narrows, my curiosity piqued.
“What happened?” I inquired.
She smiles tightly, her eyes still debating whether or not to say.
“Let's just say our Luna, Alpha Leo mate, Arizona, was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Ghana chuckles but it was very distant and dry.
I blink in surprise. A mate? That wasn’t something I’d ever heard about him.
“She was everything to him,” Ghana continues, her eyes distant as if recalling a memory. “But during one of the battles, she was taken by your pack. They...”
Ghana trails off, her expression tightening as if the words themselves are painful.
“They killed her.”
My breath hitch and I instinctively pull my arm away.
Ghana pulls it back under hers giving me a faint smile.
“He didn't show any sign of being hurt but the rest of us could see it. He refused to even look at another she-wolf. No one was—like her.”
I stare at her, my mouth opens to speak but no words make it out.
“That’s what makes this so surprising for us all that he brought you back. For Alpha Leo to bring you back means he sees something in you, something he hasn't seen since Arizona.”
Her words make my chest tighten. “There's nothing special about me.” I mumble.
If being a cursed wolf was acknowledged as being special then I didn't want to be.
“I-I'm just …useless.” I pause, I couldn't tell her I was a Vartex, I didn't know how she'd react to having a forbidden creature right in front of her.
“No one is useless Fiona, not even the weak-wolf that walks on our land.” Her eyes grew softer but I still didn't feel reassured.
“Alpha Leo chose you because he saw something in you and that's enough reason to believe you're not useless. “
Was her words supposed to make me feel better? I'd been rejected by my mate and sentenced to death by my pack and even I knew the only reason Alpha Leo brought me here was because he felt pity, nothing more. And In less than a week, if I was lucky, he was sure to sentence me to death. I already knew what would happen. He hadn't seen my wolf and that was why he still believed he could keep me alive. Even I was afraid of what I'd become.
“For the safety of this pack and all others, I beg you to kill me…please.”
Ghana's eyes widens before she shakes her head.
“You don't have to be scared Fiona, whatever happened to you there won't happen here. You're safe.”
How could I get them to understand that they were the ones who needed saving from me.
“You don't understand, killing me was the best option and it still is.”
Why wouldn't anyone just kill me? If father didn't want me then definitely I needed to die. I just needed to.
“Your wounds will heal soon enough and before you know it you'll be back on track. So for now just focus on healing and leave all those thoughts behind okay? “
I open my mouth again to protest but before any words can slip out Kendrick peeks his head through the room curtains.
“Is she done? Alpha Leo strictly ordered that she get settled in the royal house.”
Ghana glances back at me giving another tight smile.
“All done! “
She turns, placing the lotion back on the shelf behind us before handing me a small bottle.
“The wounds should take at least a week to heal but till then, no other spreading would occur and the pain will also lessen.”
I take the bottle from her hand.
“In the meantime, apply this after your bath each day till they are completely gone.”
My lips tugged slightly into a forced smile and then Kendrick makes his way towards me, guiding me out of the room.
“Now, let’s get you cleaned up and dressed. Alpha Leo will want to see you settled in the royal house before he gets back.”
