Vaelith’s POV
“Your wife is watching.”
The moment the words left my lips, Zyren’s jaw tightened hard and I stepped away from him slowly.
The ballroom remained silent and nobody dared move.
Sylvarae still clung to Zyren’s arm, but her eyes stayed locked on me and hatred burned inside them.
And I love it, I wanted her to suffer too.
I turned and walked away from the center of the ballroom calmly and I could feel Zyren staring at my back the entire time.
It was like he wanted to chase after me, like his wolf was fighting him from inside.
The mate bond burned hotter with every step I took.
I hated it, I hated how much power he still had over my body, even after everything.
….
Hours later, the palace finally grew quieter and most guests returned to their rooms.
I walkes through the hallway alone and my heels echoed softly against the marble floor.
I just wanted one peaceful moment.
One.
But suddenly, a strong hand grabbed my wrist and pulled me into a dark room and I gasped sharply and the door slammed shut behind me.
It was Zyren.
My back hit a bookshelf and his body trapped mine instantly and then one hand pressed against the shelf beside my head and his scent surrounded me completely.
It was dangerous and addictive and my heart started beating too fast.
“Zyren,” I whispered angrily. “What are you doing?”
His eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.
“Answer me first.”
I swallowed hard and the tension between us felt unbearable.
“Why does my wolf only react to you?” he asked roughly and I forced myself to stay calm.
“You should ask your wife that question.”
His jaw tightened.
“Stop saying that.”
“Why?” I asked bitterly. “Is it suddenly painful hearing the truth?”
His eyes then darkened instantly and the mate bond pulled at me violently standing this close to him.
Every breath felt dangerous.
I should push him away but instead, my body betrayed me again because deep down…
A part of me still wanted him close and I hated myself for that.
Zyren then stared at me like he was trying to read every hidden thought in my mind.
“You changed,” he said quietly and a laugh left my lips.
“You noticed?”
His gaze moved slowly across my face.
“You were never like this before.”
“Before?” I whispered. “Before you destroyed me?”
Pain flashed across his face again and then suddenly, another memory crashed into me.
….
I ran through the palace hallway smiling brightly and my heart beat wildly inside my chest.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
I still could not believe it. Zyren Kaelor was my mate, the Moon Goddess finally blessed me.
I pushed open Sylvarae’s bedroom door excitedly.
“Sylvarae!”
She looked up from her mirror.
“What happened?”
I then rushed toward her happily.
“He is my mate.”
Her brows pulled together.
“Who?”
“Zyren.”
The smile on my face grew wider.
“Alpha Zyren is my mate.”
There was silence and for one second, Sylvarae just stared at me and then she smiled slowly but something inside that smile felt wrong.
“Really?” she asked softly and I nodded quickly.
“I felt the bond today.”
She then walked toward me carefully.
“I’m so happy for you, sister.”
I laughed happily and hug her but it was a big mistake, her hand touched my back gently and then suddenly, sharp pain tore through my chest and I gasped loudly and stumbled backward.
“What…” I choke out.
Sylvarae’s smile changed and it became darker and scarier and blood dripped from the small blade hidden in her hand.
A strange symbol glowed red across the floor beneath us, it was forbidden magic and fear flooded me instantly.
“Sylvarae…”
“You were never meant to stand beside an Alpha,” she whispered smiling and pain burned through my chest harder.
The mate bond weakened suddenly and tears filled my eyes.
“What are you doing?”
“Taking what should’ve been mine.”
I stared at my own twin sister in horror.
And that night…
My life began falling apart.
….
I blinked slowly and returned to the present, Zyren still stood before me, he was too close and too dangerous.
His eyes remained fixed on my face.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked quietly.
You. Us.
The life we could have had but Instead, I said nothing and then suddenly, his fingers rose toward my face and I froze.
His hand brushed gently against my cheek and the moment he touched me, heat exploded through my body and a shaky breath left my lips before I could stop it.
Zyren’s breathing turned uneven too and the mate bond slammed into both of us violently and his forehead almost touched mine now.
“So you do feel it,” he whispered and my chest hurt, because he sounded hopeful, because a part of me still wanted this and because I knew we could never have it, not anymore, not after everything.
“You feel this too… don’t you?” he asked again and his voice sounded rough now and dangerously emotional.
I closed my eyes for one second and then I forced myself to step away from him.
“I can’t.”
The words hurt coming out and Zyren stared at me painfully.
“Vaelith…”
I then shook my head slowly.
“You are my sister’s husband.”
Silence filled the library instantly and the pain in his eyes almost broke me.
Almost.
Then suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the hallway and I left before I lost control completely.
…..
Later that night, I walked through the palace corridors carefully and something felt wrong, a strange scent filled the air. Magic.
I followed it quietly until I reached an old unused room near the west wing and voices came from inside and I stopped immediately.
It was Sylvarae and aanother woman, an older woman.
I then moved closer to the door silently.
“The bond is weakening,” the older woman said and fear entered Sylvarae’s voice instantly.
“No. That’s impossible.”
“It is already happening,” the woman replied. “The Alpha’s wolf recognizes her now.”
My heart rang harder.
She was a witch. Sylvarae brought a witch into the palace.
“You promised the spell would last forever,” Sylvarae hissed.
“Nothing lasts forever.”
Silence followed and then the witch spoke again.
“Kill Vaelith before the Crimson Moon rises.”
My breath caught.
“So long as she lives, the true mate bond will keep returning.”
Rage burned through me instantly and I stepped backward carefully but my elbow suddenly hit a vase beside the wall and it crashed!
The sound shattered through the hallway loudly and silence filled the room instantly. Damn it.
The door swung open hard and Sylvarae stepped out immediately and her eyes landed on me and mine were locked with hers and hatred exploded between us instantly.
For one long second, neither of us spoke and then suddenly…
Sylvarae smiled, a terrifying smile.
“Looks like I’ll have to kill you again, sister.”
