I don't know what terrified me the most when she finally turned around.
Was it the way she was looking at me — quiet, unreadable, eyes? Was it the crumpled letter she clutched tightly in her hand? Or the sickening realization that I had hurt her for the very first time, and the wound ran deep?
Shame burned up my throat. I was embarrassed—truly, gut-wrenchingly ashamed—that she had seen that video. The animalistic version of me from two years ago, f*****g Penelope like the world was ending.
That moment would haunt me for the rest of my life, and now it would haunt her too.
I didn’t know what to say. She was obviously waiting for me to speak, but the words got stuck in my throat. So we both just stood there on the balcony in heavy silence.
