I heard Kaitlyn's voice and couldn't help but curve my lips into a smile.
She leaned close to Ben's ear, whispering something. I vaguely heard her say, "Is it because you saw her that you've become so perverse?"
There was a whimper in her voice, a hint of grievance.
"Mommy, last night I thought I heard a monster outside," Ava came up to me, her small face filled with fear. "And crying! It was scary!"
"I heard it too!" Oliver chimed in. "I even dreamt a monster was going to eat me!"
"Really?" I smiled. "You must have been having nightmares."
Lucy walked into the kitchen. "Morning, Alice." Her face was slightly flushed, and her eyes darted between Kaitlyn and Ben, a trace of awkwardness in her gaze. She glanced at me, and I shrugged helplessly.
