Episode 12: Shifting Ground

1081 Words
The park was quieter than usual, the path lit by soft golden lamps that cast long shadows on the gravel. Drew’s dog trotted ahead, leash slack in his hand, nose to the ground. The scent of fresh-cut grass lingered in the air, mingling with the faint aroma of spring flowers from the nearby beds. Drew walked slowly, his mind far from the trail. The world was peaceful here, kids’ laughter in the distance, the soft rustle of leaves, the occasional bark of a dog echoing across the lawn. But inside, he was anything but peaceful. He kept seeing Ava, how she looked across the boardroom table, the way her eyes held storms behind their calm surface, the pause in her breath before she spoke. She wasn’t easy. She was exacting, sharp, deeply guarded. And he was falling for her in a way that made no logical sense. His dog nudged his leg, breaking the thought. “Yeah, I know,” Drew muttered. “I’m in trouble.” As they circled back toward the park entrance, his phone buzzed. It wasn’t her. Subject: Opportunity Worth Considering, Let’s Talk A recruiter from a top global firm. The email was direct, impressive, and well-timed: a high-level creative lead role in New York, full relocation, triple the resources. It was the kind of offer you didn’t ignore. But he stared at the screen and didn’t move. It wasn’t just about the job. It was what he’d be leaving behind. Ava. The campaign. The something that neither of them had dared name. He shoved the phone into his pocket without replying. Back at his apartment, Drew stood by the window and looked out over the city. The lights were endless. From here, every building looked like a possibility. But there was only one that mattered. --- The next morning, Ava arrived at Halcyon earlier than usual, sliding into the strategy pod with a fresh cup of coffee and a head full of questions. She’d barely slept. She kept replaying everything, every glance, every charged silence, every word Drew hadn’t said. Their partnership was working. Too well. It had cracked open something in her, something raw and real and impossible to ignore. She clicked through the pitch slides, though there was no need. They were already finalized. What she needed was distance. Or clarity. Or maybe just time. But time wasn’t something she could control. Not with the CEO calling them in for another review. Not with the whisper of promotions and restructuring in the air. Not with the memory of Drew’s hand brushing hers still lingering. Her phone buzzed. A calendar alert. Lunch meeting. Project alignment. With him. She almost canceled. Almost. Instead, she stood, took a breath, and walked toward the atrium conference lounge. He was already there. And for the first time, he didn’t smile. The silence between them stretched for an uncomfortable few seconds before Ava took her seat. She tried to shake off the weight of the atmosphere, thick with unspoken words, but her mind kept circling back to the same point. What was this? This thing between them that felt different from any professional dynamic she’d ever had before? “What’s on the agenda?” Drew asked, his voice just a little too casual, his expression unreadable. Ava exhaled slowly, scanning the layout of the project plan in front of her. She wasn’t prepared for this, this tension that hummed between them now like a live wire. “We’ve got the pitch finalization, the budgeting for the ad rollouts, and then we need to rework some of the messaging for the target demo,” she said, glancing up at him. She saw the faint flicker of something in his eyes, but it was gone before she could place it. A beat passed, and then she couldn’t stop herself. “Are we good? On the same page? Because last night…” She stopped herself, feeling foolish, a little too vulnerable. His brow furrowed slightly, and for a moment, the professional mask he wore slipped. “Yeah,” he said, his voice quieter. “We’re good. Just... a lot on my mind.” Ava’s stomach tightened, her heart rate quickening. His mind? Or was it me? She wanted to ask, but something held her back. Before she could respond, the waiter approached with their orders, breaking the tension between them. The conversation shifted back to the work at hand, but the unease lingered, casting a shadow over the light and casual way they navigated through their business. She found herself staring at her plate more than the conversation, her thoughts drifting back to the subtle shift in Drew’s demeanor. What was it that he wasn’t saying? “I’ve been thinking,” Drew said abruptly, cutting through the quiet between bites of salad. “About the next steps. About the future of this project.” Ava nodded, pretending to be absorbed in her food. “I’m listening.” “I’m not sure if you’ve heard,” he continued, his voice even, though there was a sharpness there she hadn’t expected. “But I’ve been offered a role. It’s a big one. And I’m... weighing it.” The words hit her like a sudden gust of cold air. Ava didn’t look up at him, but she felt her pulse spike. “And?” she asked, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice. He hesitated. “I haven’t decided yet.” Ava wanted to ask, Why haven’t you told me before now? But the words stayed stuck in her throat. Instead, she smiled tightly, picking at her food. “Well, you should make the right choice for yourself, Drew. I think you’ve earned it.” Drew didn’t say anything for a moment, studying her as though seeing her for the first time. She was always so composed, so distant, yet today, there was something there, just beneath the surface. As they finished their meal, Ava couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was shifting. Something had changed between them, and she wasn’t sure what it meant. In the quiet after their lunch, as they left the restaurant together, Drew didn’t walk beside her as usual. He trailed slightly behind, lost in thought. She couldn’t help but wonder if it was because he was already stepping out of her world, one step at a time. But she couldn’t ask. Not now. Not with the door still open for things she wasn’t sure she could let in
