The day I was supposed to interview for a wet nurse position, I found an unconscious man in a quiet alley downtown.
"Sir, are you alright?"
The man was breathtakingly handsome, as if he had walked straight out of a dream.
He was tall and broad shouldered, with no visible injuries, yet his skin was burning hot, as though fever had set his entire body ablaze.
I hurried over and helped him sit against a thick tree trunk, then turned around to find someone who could help.
A scorching hand suddenly closed around my wrist.
"Wait—I have an interview! Please, let me go!" I tried to pull away, but his grip was like iron.
He gave a sharp tug, sending me stumbling backward into his feverish embrace.
Barely conscious, he leaned toward me and buried his face against my ample bosom.
"I feel terrible. Please, help me. I'll take responsibility for you."
I wanted to refuse. I really did.
But the moment his lips touched my skin, something strange happened.
A warmth spread through my body that I hadn't felt in months—not since before my husband died, before I was alone with a newborn, before every day became a struggle just to feed my son.
It had been so long since a man had touched me.
His sexy, thin lips sucked on my n*****s, swallowing my milk in large gulps.
I should have pushed him away. I should have screamed.
But my body wouldn't listen.
It was as if some invisible force pulled me toward him, as if we were meant to be this close.
"No, I… I really have to go…" My voice came out weak, breathless, not nearly as convincing as I wanted it to be.
I was mortified.
My husband had only been dead for seven days. Letting that happen felt like a betrayal I couldn't forgive myself for.
But the man was acting on pure instinct. He hadn't regained consciousness at all.
And my body—starved for touch, starved for anything that wasn't grief and exhaustion—was responding.
I fought, but not as hard as I should have.
My hands rested on his chest, but I didn't push.
His powerful arm locked around my waist, holding me firmly against him, and I let him.
The next second, he lifted my skirt, and his hard, hot member thrust between my legs.
"No, please—I have an interview!" I planted both hands against his chest, tears shimmering in my eyes.
But even as I said the words, I could feel my own body betraying me.
He froze halfway through pinning me beneath him.
His eyes narrowed as he fought to hold on to the last thread of reason.
His voice came out rough and strained. "Please, help me. I feel terrible. I feel like I'm on fire."
His exposed skin had turned bright red, the veins bulging beneath it as though he might burst at any second.
The sight made me stop fighting back entirely.
If I didn't help him, he might actually die. I couldn't bear to watch someone lose his life right before my eyes.
With tears burning in my eyes, I said nothing and turned my face aside.
Taking that as permission, the man penetrated me.
"Ah!" A soft, breathless moan escaped my throat before I could stop it.
It had been so long. Too long.
I burned with embarrassment, wishing the ground would swallow me whole.
But beneath the shame was something else—a pleasure I hadn't felt in months, a release from the loneliness that had pressed down on me since Joel died.
My reaction only seemed to push him further. He pressed closer, his movements growing more intense.
Sunlight slipped beneath the eaves and fell across our bodies.
On the ground, our tangled shadows merged into one.
His ragged breathing and my muffled, suppressed sounds carried through the cramped, dim alley for three long hours.
At last, he released a deep, satisfied sigh, then slumped to the side and lost consciousness completely.
I wiped the tear trailing down my cheek, straightened my rumpled clothes, then reached over and touched his forehead before getting to my feet.
The feverish heat was gone.
Relief washed over me. My gaze paused for a moment on the milky residue at his lips before I hurriedly looked away.
By the time the city bells rang, it was already 1 pm.
I gasped in alarm, "Oh no! I'm going to be late for my interview!"
I spun around and hurried off, never noticing that the man who had been unconscious behind me slowly opened his eyes.
The dragon lord, August Holden, pushed himself upright, his body still weak and trembling.
He looked around the empty alley.
She was gone.
No footsteps, no voice, no sign of which direction she had run.
Nothing remained but the faint scent of her milk still lingering in the air, and the tangled mark on the ground where their bodies had been.
Who was she?
He clearly remembered that moments ago, he and a woman had shared the most intimate encounter imaginable, their bodies becoming one.
Ever since the curse had robbed him of the chance to have a mate, this was the first time being close to a woman hadn't left him vomiting or covered in hives.
It was also the first time his heat had ever been relieved so thoroughly, leaving him feeling completely at ease.
It was almost as if fate had sent her to him.
He had to find that woman.
Even if he had to search every corner of the city.
I had no idea what had happened after I left. I reached Holden Manor with barely any time to spare.
"The Holden family has extremely strict standards for the wet nurse caring for the young master, Leo Holden. Her looks, height, weight, figure, and even education all have to meet the requirements."
Bryce Stone, the hiring manager, laid out the basic requirements in a stern tone.
After dismissing several women who failed the appearance check, he dropped another bombshell.
"Now, take off all your clothes."
The demand sounded outrageous.
Bryce gestured to a stern-looking maid standing nearby. "Martha will handle the inspection. I'll wait outside."
He turned and left the room, closing the door behind him.
Shame had stopped being a luxury I could afford the day my son was born. Besides, we were all women here.
While the others stood there hesitating, I had already stripped down completely, baring my full breasts.
I had no idea why the others wanted to be wet nurses, but I was doing it because I needed to survive.
Two months earlier, I gave birth to my son. Seven days ago, my husband, Joel Smith, got drunk, fell into a river, and drowned, leaving my baby and me to fend for ourselves.
I had to land this job. It was the only way I could put food on the table for my son and me.
Martha held a measuring tape as she went down the line, inspecting each applicant.
When she stopped in front of one woman, the woman immediately puffed out her chest, clearly eager to flaunt what she had.
Martha's expression darkened. "You're here to be Mr. Leo's wet nurse, not to throw yourself at Mr. Holden! Get out!"
The woman froze before letting out an offended scoff.
"Fine, don't hire me. There is no need to be so nasty. Besides, everyone knows the head of the Holden family is ruthless and brutal. Why would I ever try to seduce him?"
I watched Martha's brows knit together after she left.
No one called Mr. Holden ruthless and brutal and walked away from it.
Martha gave the bodyguard standing by the door a discreet look.
My heart skipped a beat. I silently reminded myself to choose my words carefully, whatever happened.
One wrong word could get me into trouble with someone I couldn't afford to cross.
Martha moved on with the inspection.
Every rejection came with its own reason. Body odor, rejected. Scars, pass. A flat chest that suggested she wouldn't produce enough milk, an automatic pass.
At last, Martha stopped in front of the woman beside me.
She had soft, delicate features and a generous bust, looking almost like a young woman who had never married or given birth.
A sweet, pleasant aura seemed to surround her.
Martha spoke, "Annabelle, you've always stayed by Madam Holden's side and helped care for Mr. Leo. You've done an excellent job, so naturally, you're staying."
What she didn't say out loud was that Annabelle was Elizabeth's goddaughter—raised in the manor since childhood, officially the head housekeeper, but everyone knew Elizabeth had chosen her to be August's wife.
August had never acknowledged it.
But Annabelle certainly had.
Although the competition was fierce, I still prayed I would make the cut.
Just then, Martha stopped in front of me. Her gaze passed over my chest, and genuine surprise flickered across her face.
"Most women lose their firmness after having a baby, but yours have held up beautifully. They are full, firm, and producing plenty of milk."
"Your skin is soft, your hair is glossy, and you look healthy from head to toe. You're practically made for this job."
A moment later, Bryce returned.
He glanced over the remaining women, then spoke.
"The three of you—come with me to meet Mr. Leo for the final round. As long as Mr. Leo accepts you, you'll be officially hired."My eyes lit up with joy.
With the Holden family's brutal standards, I had been sure I would be rejected, yet I was actually one step away from landing the job!
"Thank you!" I said gratefully, silently giving myself a pep talk.
I had to get this job. Then my son and I would finally have something to fall back on!
Bryce led the three of us to the young master for the feeding test.
Half an hour later, we followed Bryce to meet Elizabeth Holden, the matriarch of the Holden family.
"Elizabeth."
The instant Annabelle spotted Elizabeth, she hurried behind her and began rubbing her shoulders.
The sight was warm and tender, like a devoted daughter fussing over her mother.
Bryce clearly wasn't surprised. He calmly reported the results of Leo's feeding test to Elizabeth.
"All three women have been tested, and Mr. Leo accepted their milk. But he preferred Delis Costello's the most, and she produces plenty. One feeding is enough to leave Mr. Leo satisfied."
"Really? That is wonderful!" Elizabeth looked at me with obvious delight.
Bryce seemed to remember something. He leaned close to Elizabeth and quietly whispered a few words.
Elizabeth paused, her eyes flickering briefly, but she soon said, "That doesn't matter. If she can keep Leo fed and sleeping well, then she's a good wet nurse."
"You are hired." Elizabeth looked at me. "Starting today, you will stay by young master Leo's side for eight hours a day and make sure he's properly fed."
Annabelle stared at me, her hand tightening into a fist at her side.
Ever since August brought Leo home, she had stayed beside Leo and helped care for him, yet she had never earned Leo's wholehearted affection.
Now, a mere human's milk had somehow won him over?
What a joke!
No! She absolutely couldn't let that happen!
Leo could only be raised by her! And the woman standing beside August could only be her as well!
A vicious look flashed through Annabelle's eyes.
The next moment, her fingers twitched, and a flash of something sharp sliced cleanly through the buttons over my chest.
Bang!
The buttons popped open, and my dress fell apart, exposing my breasts in front of everyone.
"Ah!" I had no idea what had happened and hurriedly grabbed both sides of my dress, trying to cover myself.
As I struggled to shield myself, Annabelle pointed at me, her voice dripping with accusation.
"Delis, are you finally done pretending?"
"Ms. Stone warned us that we weren't allowed to have improper thoughts about any of the men in the manor! Yet here you are, trying to seduce someone!"
"Elizabeth, I think you should reconsider. Someone like her could have ulterior motives and deliberately approached Mr. Leo! More importantly, she could have her sights set on August!"
"If August's secret gets exposed and someone exploits it, the entire Holden family could be brought to ruin!"
I had no idea why Annabelle was coming after me, but I absolutely couldn't afford to lose this job.
However, just as I was racking my brain for a way to defend myself, Elizabeth's questioning gaze suddenly turned firm.
"You're right. Guards, throw her out!"
I realized then—to them, I was just a human. Not worth risking the family's reputation over.
"No, that's not what happened…"
I tried to explain, but Annabelle was already in my face, shoving me toward the exit.
"Get out, you shameless slut! Don't stain this place with your presence!"
She leaned close to my ear and whispered viciously, "Go to hell, b***h!"
Before I could make sense of her words, she gave me a hard shove over the railing.
"No!"
I screamed. I didn't want to die. I still had my son waiting for me!
My body plunged toward the ground three stories below, completely helpless.
Just when I thought my life was over, a furious roar shook the air.
Out of nowhere, a tall, muscular figure transformed into a fearsome dragon and swept down on massive wings, catching me at lightning speed before I could hit the ground.
The moment I saw the man holding me, I went rigid.
"It's you?"
